Recognition and alignment of variables from UV–vis chromatograms and application to industrial enzyme digests classification

2017

Abstract In the last years, industrial applications of chemometrics have largely increased due to their capacity to extract important information from complex records as chromatograms or spectra data. The use of chemometric methods also can avoid the use of detectors of elevated cost. In this work, a procedure to recognize the relevant chemical information contained in complex UV–vis chromatograms, after a trypsin digestion, to identify the three enzyme main classes (proteases, amylases and cellulases) commonly employed in the cleaning industry, has been developed. In order to recognize the chromatogram peaks, six indices of peak identity or identifiers were defined. A program written in MA…

Ceftazidime Determination in Serum by High-pressure Liquid Chromatography

2004

A rapid and sensitive high-pressure liquid chromatographic method with simple sample preparation was developed for the quantitative analysis of the beta-lactam antibiotic ceftazidime (CAS 78439-06-2, Fortum). A good linear relationship was established between the peak area and the amount of ceftazidime injected over a concentration range of 1 to 200 microg/ml. The detection limit of the method was calculated to be 0.9 microg/ml. Stability was shown at 4 degrees C and at -196 degrees C for time periods of 2 h and 84 days, respectively.

From Exclusion to Inclusion: Deaf and Hard-of-Hearing Students in the Spanish University

2008

The educational inclusion of disabled people constitutes one of the most relevant educational and pedagogical innovations in the past decades. This article analyses such inclusion at the university level choosing students with deafness as a representative and extrapolative sample. After specifying the main limitations and needs for this group of students, the study revises the solutions put forward by the current legislation and it details in depth, by way of a comparative study, the services provided now by the newly created University Services for the Integration of students with special educational needs. The study points out conclusively some proposals for the future?principles, strateg…

Correlation between neonatal outcomes of twins depends on the outcome : Secondary analysis of twelve randomised controlled trials

2018

ObjectiveTo estimate the magnitude of the correlation between neonatal outcomes of twins and demonstrate how this information can be used in the design of randomised controlled trials (RCTs) in women with twin pregnancies.DesignSecondary analysis of data from 12 RCTs.SettingObstetric care in multiple countries, 2004-2012.Population or sample4504 twin pairs born to women who participated in RCTs to assess treatments given during pregnancy.MethodsIntraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were estimated using log-binomial and linear models.Main outcome measuresPerinatal death, respiratory distress syndrome, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, intraventricular haemorrhage, necrotising enterocolitis, s…

It is time to abandon “Expected bladder capacity.” Systematic review and new models for children's normal maximum voided volumes

2013

Background There is an agreement to use simple formulae (expected bladder capacity and other age based linear formulae) as bladder capacity benchmark. But real normal child's bladder capacity is unknown. Aims To offer a systematic review of children's normal bladder capacity, to measure children's normal maximum voided volumes (MVVs), to construct models of MVVs and to compare them with the usual formulae. Methods Computerized, manual and grey literature were reviewed until February 2013. Epidemiological, observational, transversal, multicenter study. A consecutive sample of healthy children aged 5–14 years, attending Primary Care centres with no urologic abnormality were selected. Particip…

The nutritional requirements of infants. Towards EU alignment of reference values: the EURRECA network

2010

This paper presents a review of the current knowledge regarding the macro- and micronutrient requirements of infants and discusses issues related to these requirements during the first year of life. The paper also reviews the current reference values used in European countries and the methodological approaches used to derive them by a sample of seven European and international authoritative committees from which background scientific reports are available. Throughout the paper, the main issues contributing to disparities in micronutrient reference values for infants are highlighted. The identification of these issues in relation to the specific physiological aspects of infants is important …

Estimators and confidence intervals of f2 using bootstrap methodology for the comparison of dissolution profiles

2021

Abstract Background and objectives: The most widely used method to compare dissolution profiles is the similarity factor f 2 . When this method is not applicable, the confidence interval of f 2 using bootstrap methodology has been recommended instead. As neither details of the estimator nor the types of confidence intervals are described in the guidelines, the suitability of five estimators and fourteen types of confidence intervals were investigated in this study by simulation. Methods: One million individual dissolution profiles were simulated for the reference and test populations with predefined target population f 2 values, where random samples of different sizes were drawn without rep…

Motivating Low-Achievers—Relative Performance Feedback in Primary Schools

2021

Abstract Relative performance feedback (RPF) has often been shown to improve effort and performance in the workplace and educational settings. Yet, many studies also document substantial negative effects of RPF, in particular for low-achievers. We study a novel type of RPF designed to overcome these negative effects of RPF on low-achievers by scoring individual performance improvements. With a sample of 400 children, we conduct a class-wise randomized-controlled trial using an e-learning software in regular teaching lessons in primary schools. We demonstrate that this type of RPF significantly increases motivation, effort, and performance in math for low-achieving children, without hurting …
