Determinants of Chairman Compensation

This study examines determinants of chairman compensation in a supervisory board setting and, specifically, the relationship between chairman and CEO compensation. Using a sample of publicly listed firms in Sweden, the study indicates that chairman compensation – despite its fixed nature – is reflective of firm performance via a positive relationship to CEO compensation. As CEO compensation is set before chairman compensation, we argue that the chairman may be inclined to conspire with the CEO in earnings management efforts at the expense of monitoring on behalf of investors. The majority of previous research has examined school engagement as an overall student characteristic. The present study contributes to the field by examining variation in students' situation-specific engagement from one lesson to another and by investigating situational determinants of such variation. An intensive one-week lesson-to-lesson data collection was conducted in four lower secondary school classrooms. By reporting on two teaching experiences in the context of the teaching of Spanish as a foreign language, this study reviews the role of extensive reading and ways to implement it in the foreign language classroom. One of the projects -the practice of extensive reading through free reading time in the classroom- serves as the basis for the second, Handcrafted books , in which the student begins as a reader and then becomes an author. The present work is descriptive in nature and it introduces the theoretical framework that supports each project, guidelines for its im plementation, and participant reactions.

A fundamental problem in distributed computing is the distribution of requests to a set of uniform servers without a centralized controller. Classically, such problems are modeled as static balls into bins processes, where $m$ balls (tasks) are to be distributed to $n$ bins (servers). In a seminal work, Azar et al. proposed the sequential strategy \greedy{d} for $n=m$. When thrown, a ball queries the load of $d$ random bins and is allocated to a least loaded of these. Azar et al. showed that $d=2$ yields an exponential improvement compared to $d=1$. Inductive types in homotopy type theory

Homotopy type theory is an interpretation of Martin-L\"of's constructive type theory into abstract homotopy theory. There results a link between constructive mathematics and algebraic topology, providing topological semantics for intensional systems of type theory as well as a computational approach to algebraic topology via type theory-based proof assistants such as Coq. The present work investigates inductive types in this setting.
