Anti-inflammatory activity of saikosaponins from Heteromorpha trifoliata.

1995

By means of activity-directed chromatographic fractionation using the 12-O-tetradecanoylphorbol acetate (TPA)-induced edema test, two saikosaponins were isolated from the MeOH extract of Heteromorpha trifoliata leaves. They were identified as 16 beta, 23-dihydroxy-13,28-epoxyolean-11-en-3 beta-yl-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->3)]-beta-D-fucopyranoside [1] and 16 beta, 23,28-trihydroxy-11 alpha-methoxyolean-12-en-3 beta-yl-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->2)]-[beta-D-glucopyranosyl (1-->3) [beta-D-fucopyranoside [2]. Compound 1 showed activity in the TPA and ethylphenylpropiolate (EPP) mouse ear edema and the serotonin paw edema tests, whereas compound 2 was active o…

Mid-regional pro-adrenomedullin predicts poor outcome in non-selected patients admitted to an intensive care unit.

2018

AbstractBackgroundMortality risk and outcome in critically ill patients can be predicted by scoring systems, such as APACHE and SAPS. The identification of prognostic biomarkers, simple to measure upon admission to an intensive care unit (ICU) is an open issue. The aim of this observational study was to assess the prognostic value of plasma mid-regional pro-adrenomedullin (MR-proADM) at ICU admission in non-selected patients in comparison to Acute Physiology and Chronic Health Evaluation II (APACHEII) and Simplified Acute Physiology Score II (SAPSII) scores.MethodsAPACHEII and SAPSII scores were calculated after 24 h from ICU admission. Plasma MR-proADM levels were measured by TRACE-Kryptor…

Elongation and desaturation of arachidonic and eicosapentaenoic acids in rat liver. Effect of clofibrate feeding

1991

The fatty acid elongation-desaturation ability of 5,8,11,14-eicosatetraenoic (20:4(n-6)) and 5,8,11,14,17-eicosapentaenoic (20:5(n-3)) acids was determined in both liver microsomal and light mitochondrial (rich in peroxisomes) fractions of untreated and clofibrate treated rats. The elongation and the subsequent desaturation steps were performed in the corresponding favorable media. 20:5(n-3) elongation was about 2-times more extensive than that of 20:4(n-6). Clofibrate feeding for 10 days resulted in a marked decrease in the elongation rate with the two substrates, while the delta 4 desaturation rate was increased. There were small differences in the elongation rate between the microsomal a…

School-Age Children's Actual Motor Competence and Perceived Physical Competence: A 3-Yr Follow-up.

2022

Purpose This study examined school-aged children’s actual motor competence (MC) and perceived physical competence (PC) over three years along with the covariate effects of gender and body mass index (BMI). Methods Participants were 1 121 (girls 573, boys 548) children (Mage 11.26 ± .32) from 35 randomly selected public schools across Finland. MC was assessed using three movement tests targeting locomotor, stability, and object control skills, and PC was assessed using the sport competence subscale of the Physical Self-Perception Profile via four-phase monitoring. Results MC and PC remained stable over time. Of the three variables, locomotor skills showed the strongest association with PC. L…

Human longevity within an evolutionary perspective: The peculiar paradigm of a postreproductive genetics

2008

The data we collected on the genetics of human longevity, mostly resulting from studies on centenarians, indicate that: (1) centenarians and long-living sib-pairs are a good choice for the study of human longevity, because they represent an extreme phenotype, i.e., the survival tail of the population who escaped neonatal mortality, pre-antibiotic era illnesses, and fatal outcomes of age-related complex diseases. (2) The model of centenarians is not simply an additional model with respect to well-studied organisms, and the study of humans has revealed characteristics of ageing and longevity (geographical and sex differences, role of antigenic load and inflammation, role of mtDNA variants) wh…
