Professional autonomy or political loyalty? How Norwegian Chief Municipality Officers handles the balance between profession and politics

2021

Insensitivity of Tree-Ring Growth to Temperature and Precipitation Sharpens the Puzzle of Enhanced Pre-Eruption NDVI on Mt. Etna (Italy)

2017

On Mt. Etna (Italy), an enhanced Normalized Difference in Vegetation Index (NDVI) signature was detected in the summers of 2001 and 2002 along a distinct line where, in November 2002, a flank eruption subsequently occurred. These observations suggest that pre-eruptive volcanic activity may have enhanced photosynthesis along the future eruptive fissure. If a direct relation between NDVI and future volcanic eruptions could be established, it would provide a straightforward and low-cost method for early detection of upcoming eruptions. However, it is unclear if, or to what extent, the observed enhancement of NDVI can be attributed to volcanic activity prior to the subsequent eruption. We conse…

Clostridium difficile IStron CdISt1: Discovery of a Variant Encoding Two Complete Transposase-Like Proteins

2004

ABSTRACT Screening a Clostridium difficile strain collection for the chimeric element Cd ISt1 , we identified two additional variants, designated Cd ISt1 -0 and Cd ISt1 -III. In in vitro assays, we could prove the self-splicing ribozyme activity of these variants. Structural comparison of all known Cd ISt1 variants led us to define four types of IStrons that we designated Cd ISt1 -0 through Cd ISt1 -III. Since Cd ISt1 -0 encodes two complete transposase-like proteins (TlpA and TlpB), we suggest that it represents the original genetic element, hypothesized before to have originated by fusion of a group I intron and an insertion sequence element.

Impact of Insertion Sequences and RNAs on Genomic Inversions in Pseudomonas aeruginosa

2022

Abstract In this article, a bioinformatics pipeline is proposed that focuses on two types of elements, namely the mobile genetic elements (MGE) and Ribonucleic acids (RNAs). The MGEs are called insertion sequences (ISs) in the prokaryotic domain. The objective of this research work is to study the behaviour of RNAs and MGEs genes, and the effects of their presence around inversions in genome sequences. The proposed pipeline finds the relation between the transposase gene types (e.g., DDE and DEDD) located within insertion sequences according to their IS family and sub-family, and RNAs (tRNA and rRNA) on the one hand, and genomic inversion on the other hand. More precisely, we wonder whether…

Sleeping Beauty transposon system – future trend in T-cell-based gene therapies?

2006

Evaluation of: Huang X, Wilber AC, Bao L et al.: Stable gene transfer and expression in human primary T cells by the Sleeping Beauty transposon system. Blood 107, 483–491 (2006). The Sleeping Beauty (SB) transposon system can mediate stable gene transfer and expression in primary human T cells. Optimal in vitro conditions for maximum gene transfer efficiencies have been developed with regard to further application of the SB transposon system in T cell based gene therapies. This raises the question of whether or not the SB transposon system is a convincing alternative for virus-mediated gene transfer based on the currently available data. Here, we will discuss controversial safety and effic…

On the transposon origins of mammalian SCAND3 and KRBA2, two zinc-finger genes carrying an integrase/transposase domain

2012

SCAND3 and KRBA2 are two mammalian proteins originally described as “cellular-integrases” due to sharing of a similar DDE-type integrase domain whose origin and relationship with other recombinases remain unclear. Here we perform phylogenetic analyses of 341 integrase/transposase sequences to reveal that the integrase domain of SCAND3 and KRBA2 derives from the same clade of GINGER2, a superfamily of cut-and-paste transposons widely distributed in insects and other protostomes, but seemingly absent or extinct in vertebrates. Finally, we integrate the results of phylogenetic analyses to the taxonomic distribution of SCAND3 and KRBA2 and their transposon relatives to discuss some of the proce…

Sequences homologous to the hobo transposable element in E strains of Drosophila melanogaster.

2001

Hobo is one of the three Drosophila melanogaster transposable elements, together with the P and I elements, that seem to have recently invaded the genome of this species. Surveys of the presence of hobo in strains from different geographical and temporal origins have shown that recently collected strains contain complete and deleted elements with high sequence similarity (H strains), but old strains lack hobo elements (E strains). Besides the canonical hobo sequences, both H and E strains show other poorly known hobo-related sequences. In the present work, we analyze the presence, cytogenetic location, and structure of some of these sequences in E strains of D. melanogaster. By in situ hybr…

Environmental Gamma Radiation Measurements on the Island of Pantelleria

1992

The population exposure to those living on the island of Pantelleria, Italy, was estimated by measuring the natural gamma background. Gamma spectra of natural rocks and measurements of absorbed dose in air were taken. A correlation was found between the mean gamma exposure rate and the mean values of natural radionuclide concentrations in the investigated rocks.

Problematic and non-problematic engagement in Online Sexual Activities across the lifespan

2021

During the last decade, the number of people using the Internet for sexual purposes has increased exponentially. However, most studies conducted so far have analysed Online Sexual Activity (OSA) of adolescents and young people, meaning that we have few information on how this phenomenon is expressed across the lifespan. The aim of this study was to analyse three aspects of OSA (prevalence of different OSAs, motives to engage in OSA, and excessive and problematic engagement in OSA) in a large sample of individuals in different developmental stages. A self-selected sample of 8040 individuals between 12 and 85 years old were recruited and completed an online survey. Participants were distribut…
