Measurement of Atmospheric Neutrino Oscillations with IceCube
2013
We present the first statistically significant detection of neutrino oscillations in the high-energy regime ($>$ 20 GeV) from an analysis of IceCube Neutrino Observatory data collected in 2010-2011. This measurement is made possible by the low energy threshold of the DeepCore detector ($\sim 20$ GeV) and benefits from the use of the IceCube detector as a veto against cosmic ray-induced muon background. The oscillation signal was detected within a low-energy muon neutrino sample (20 -- 100 GeV) extracted from data collected by DeepCore. A high-energy muon neutrino sample (100 GeV -- 10 TeV) was extracted from IceCube data to constrain systematic uncertainties. Disappearance of low-energy upw…
Unusual Intranuclear Inclusions in Malignant Fibrous Histiocytoma: Presence in Primary Tumor
1982
We describe previously unreported intranuclear inclusions in 2 cases of malignant fibrous histiocytoma. The inclusions were found in 2-10% of the tumor cells removed from the patients and in 2-10% of the cells examined in tumor tissue xenotransplanted in nude mice. By stereo electron microscopy the inclusions are closely packed undulating fibrils 18-23 nm in diameter. They are sometimes associated with fibrillary bodies. They closely resemble the inclusions reported in some animals inoculated with serum from patients with non-A non-B hepatitis; however, their nature at present is unknown.
Assessment of Tumor Development and Wound Healing Using Endoscopic Techniques in Mice
2010
Mouse models of intestinal inflammation and colon cancer are valuable tools to gain insights into the pathogenesis of the corresponding human diseases. Recently, in vivo mouse endoscopy has been developed, allowing not only the high-resolution monitoring and scoring of experimental disease development, but also enables the investigator to perform manipulations, including local injection of reagents or the taking of biopsies for molecular and histopathologic analyses. Chromoendoscopic staining with methylene blue enables visualization of the crypt structure and allows discrimination between inflammatory and neoplastic changes. The development of endoscopic techniques in live mice opened new …
Immunoelectron-microscopic localization of synaptophysin in the organ of Corti of the guinea pig.
1997
Synaptophysin has been localized previously in the mammalian cochlea at the light-microscopic level and in few reports by electron microscopy using either a preincubation procedure or the avidin-biotin reaction. Here we present results of the electron-microscopic analysis for postembedding immunoreactivity of synaptophysin in the cochlea of the guinea pig of LR-White-embedded samples. Strong synaptophysin immunoreactivity is located in the cytoplasm of the efferent nerve endings at the base of inner and outer hair cells. Besides this, some antibodies to synaptophysin were also identified in the cytoplasm of outer hair cells. To get more information about the cellular content of synaptophysi…
Ultrastructural localization of Ca2(+)-binding sites in the middle ear mucosa of the rat.
1990
Cations were precipitated with potassium-pyroantimonate in the middle ear mucosa of the rat and the distribution of the formed precipitates was studied by electron microscopy. The precipitate density in various cells of the different epithelia of the middle ear mucosa was determined on electron micrographs by counting the number of precipitates per unit area. Electron spectroscopic imaging was also performed to obtain information about the spatial distribution of the precipitates and their elemental composition.
Confocal laser endoscopy for diagnosing intraepithelial neoplasias and colorectal cancer in vivo
2004
Background & Aims: Aconfocal laser endoscopy system has recently been developed that may allow subsurface imaging of living cells in colonic tissue in vivo. The aim of the present study was to assess its potential for prediction of histology during screening colonoscopy for colorectal cancer. Methods: Twenty-seven patients underwent colonoscopy with the confocal endoscope using acriflavine hydrochloride or fluorescein sodium with blue laser illumination. Furthermore, 42 patients underwent colonoscopy with this system using fluorescein sodium. Standardized locations and circumscript lesions were examined by confocal imaging before taking biopsy specimens. Confocal images were graded accordin…
Confocal laser endomicroscopy.
2005
A miniaturized confocal microscope was developed that could be integrated in the distal tip of a conventional colonoscope. With this technique, denoted confocal endomicroscopy, subsurface analysis of the gut mucosa and in-vivo histology during ongoing endoscopy are possible in full resolution by point scanning laser analysis. The diagnostic spectrum of confocal endomicroscopy is expanding from screening and surveillance for colorectal cancer to Barrett's esophagus, Helicobacter pylori-associated gastritis, and gastric cancer. The new detailed images seen with confocal laser endomicroscopy allow a unique look on cellular structures at and below the surface of the gut. This review describes t…
Neuropathologic and morphometric studies in hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type II with neurofilament accumulation.
1986
Histological, electron microscopic and morphometric data on sural nerve, muscle, and skin biopsies of three patients affected by autosomal dominant hereditary motor and sensory neuropathy type II with neurofilament accumulation, whose neurological, cardiological and electrophysiological data have been provided in a previous paper disclosed focally enlarged myelinated axons, due to aggregation of neurofilaments in sural nerves of all 3 biopsied patients, as well as densely packed clusters of filaments in occasional non-myelinated axons without axonal enlargement, in several fibroblasts and endothelial cells in muscle and particularly in skin. This accumulation of filaments was less pronounce…
Scanning electron microscopy of the cervix uteri.
1974
Scanning electron microscopy has been used in the study of five cases of the cervix uteri: two normal cases; one case of indirect metaplasia; one case of carcinoma in situ whose colposcopic examination showed an erosio vera surrounded by leucoplasia, mosaic, base, and an area of atipic transformation zone and one case of invasive carcinoma.
Ultrastructural study of primary canine and human pigmentary retinopathy
1985
An electron microscopic study was performed on eyes of Labrador dogs afflicted with progressive retinal atrophy (PRA). There was complete loss of photoreceptors, atrophy of the remaining retina and gliosis in the peripheral part while the central retina showed incomplete loss of photoreceptors and an almost total disappearance of photoreceptor outer segments. Melanin-bearing cells, largely containing melanolysosomes, were found deep inside the retina. This electron microscopic study also incorporated the retina of a middle-aged woman affected by retinopathia pigmentosa (RP). The fine structure of the diseased retina showed a similar pattern of lesions, more pronounced in the periphery of th…
