On-Surface Synthesis of Oligo(indenoindene)

Fully conjugated ladder polymers (CLP) possess unique optical and electronic properties, and are considered promis-ing materials for applications in (opto)electronic devices. Poly(indenoindene) is a CLP consisting of an alternating array of five- and six-membered rings, which has remained elusive so far. Here, we report an on-surface synthesis of oligo(indenoindene) on Au(111). Its structure and a low elec-tronic bandgap have been elucidated by low-temperature scanning tunneling microscopy and spectroscopy and non-contact atomic force microscopy, complemented by density functional theory calculations. Studies of the Ca4Mn3O10structure obtained using high pressure and high temperature

An ideal n = 3 member of the group of Ruddlesden?Popper (RP) phases Ca4Mn3O10 was obtained by solid-state reaction under high pressure. This phase has been studied by transmission electron microscopy, convergent beam electron microscopy, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, and parallel electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The lattice parameters are derived as a = b = 0.37 nm and c = 2.69 nm with the space group I4/mmm, which is the space group of the ideal RP phase.

Scanning tunneling microscopy investigation of tricycloquinazoline liquid crystals on gold

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) of hexaalkylthioether derivatives of tricycloquinazoline (TCQ) on Au(111) and tungsten diselenide (WSe2) were investigated by scanning tunneling microscopy (STM). The Au(111) surfaces were found to be etched by the thioether containing solutions. Corroded surfaces which are similar to gold surfaces that were coated with SAMs of thiols or disulfides were revealed by STM. Atomic adsorption spectroscopy proved that an amount of gold that corresponds to ca. 30% of a monolayer was dissolved in the assembly solutions. Liquid/Gas and Liquid/Liquid Phase Equilibria of the System Water/Bovine Serum Albumin

The thermodynamic behavior of the system H2O/BSA was studied at 25 °C within the entire composition range: vapor pressure measurements via head space sampling gas chromatography demonstrate that the attainment of equilibria takes more than one week. A miscibility gap was detected via turbidity and the coexisting phases were analyzed. At 6 °C the two phase region extends from ca. 34 to 40 wt % BSA; it shrinks upon heating. The polymer rich phase is locally ordered, as can be seen under the optical microscope using crossed polarizers. Packings of an unidimensional regular pore structure as model packings in size-exclusion and inverse size-exclusion chromatography

Using porous aluminas and aluminosilicates with a regular and well-defined pore structure an attempt was made to correlate the SEC data of polystyrenes with established theoretical models. The pore structure of the two types of packings was extensively characterized by means of transmission and scanning electron microscopy, nitrogen sorption and mercury porosimetry. The SEC distribution coefficients measured experimentally were correlated with the distribution coefficients calculated from the theoretical models for flexible polymers. Non-porous polybutadiene-coated silicas as stationary phases in reversed-phase chromatography

Abstract Non-porous silica of mean particle diameter 1.7 μm (Monospher) was coated with polybutadiene (PBD) following a published procedure. The silicas were prepared with graduated polymer loads up to 8% (w/w). Examination of the PBD-coated packings by means of electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis, scanning electron microscopy, diffuse reflection infrared fourier transform spectroscopy and differential thermal gravimetry indicated that the optimum polymer load was between 1 and 3% (w/w) with regard to a dense coverage corresponding to an average layer thickness of about 4 nm. Polymer-coated reversed-phase packings in high-performance liquid chromatography

The synthesis and properties of polymer-coated RP stationary phases are reviewed. The sorbents are classified according to the method of synthesis. More flexibility in the tailoring of polymer-coated packings is noted. The impact of the polymer coating on the porosity of the oxides to be modified and their chromatographic properties is discussed.

The sanidic polyamide [NM-Ph(CO 2 R) 3 (CO 2 Me)-NMCO-Ph(OR) 2 CO] n (R=C 12 H 25 ) is studied. It is shown that this polymer has a biaxial structure with quasi 2-D long range translational correlations. The correlations in one direction are limited by the length of the molecule. A structural investigation is described of poly(L-lactic acid) by best fitting of powder X-ray diffraction patterns. The examined sample shows the already known pseudo-orthorhombic α-form, and it was possible to determine the location of the two 103 polymeric helices in the unit cell and the size distribution of the crystallites. Furthermore, a study is reported of the crystallization kinetics of the above cited polymer by light depolarization measurements in an optical microscope. The crystallization kinetic constants in bulk were evaluated in a temperature range (70–165°C) wider than that previously resulting from measurements of radial growth of spherulites.

Free-standing smectic LC elastomer films

ABSTRACTWe probe the mesophase transitions and layer structures in thin ordered smectic liquid crystalline elastomer films by means of x-ray diffraction and optical microscopy. Oriented elastomer films of submicrometer thickness are produced by crosslinking freely suspended smectic polymer films. After crosslinking, the mesomorphism is similar to that of the precursor polymer. Smectic layers align parallel to the film plane. The layer spacing increases with temperature in the SmC* phase while it decays above the SmC*-SmA transition.
