Histological and electron microscopical observations on the effects of lead on gills and midgut gland ofProcambarus clarkii

Adult intermolt specimen of Procambarus clarkii (Crustacea, Decapoda) have been treated for 96 hours in aquaria with 100mg/l of lead. The gills and midgut gland were processed and studied in the electron microscope. The gill filament shows important changes in the ultrastructure of the epithelial cells and the cuticle. The hepatopancreatic cells studied (i.e. the vacuolated and dark cells) do not show noticeable structural changes but accumulate lead (electrondense precipitates) mainly in lysosomes.

Seasonality in Tourism: Do Senior Programs Mitigate It?

Seasonality is a widely recognised and accredited phenomenon known to cause an imbalance in tourism activity throughout the year, prompting tourist destinations, both public and private, to consider how best to plan the use of their resources. One way of mitigating the economic imbalances that seasonality can cause is to find strategies for seasonal adjustment, such as travel programmes aimed at the elderly. This paper analyses the seasonality of tourism activity in some EU countries, and in particular in Spain. Different indicators are used to compare the results and carry out a sensitivity analysis. Strong Bonding of Single C60 Molecules to (1 × 2)-Pt(110): an STM/DFT Investigation.

International audience; The interaction of single C60 molecules with the (1 × 2)-Pt(110) surface has been studied by scanning tunneling microscopy and density functional theory (DFT) calculations on slab models. Molecules are observed to be frozen at room temperature and are found to be almost exclusively in the same configuration. Extensive DFT calculations show that this configuration is the global energy minimum, suggesting that adsorbed molecules have enough rototranslational freedom to escape from the numerous local minima. The adsorption energy (3.81 eV) is the strongest ever found for C60, and it is roughly proportional to the number of the Pt and C atoms at contact distance. Analysi…

Nanosecond laser surface modification of AISI 304L stainless steel: Influence the beam overlap on pitting corrosion resistance

Abstract Surface modifications of AISI 304L stainless steel by laser surface melting (LSM) were investigated using a nanosecond pulsed laser-fibre doped by ytterbium at different overlaps. The objective was to study the change in the corrosion properties induced by the treatment of the outer-surface of the stainless steel without modification of the bulk material. Amylopectin is used for carbohydrate storage in different life-stages of a number of apicomplexan parasites. We have performed an ultrastructural analysis of amylopectin granules from the oocyst residual body and sporozoites ofCryptosporidium parvum. Porphyrin-bile acid conjugates: from saccharide recognition in the solution to the selective cancer cell fluorescence detection.

This paper describes the preparation and use of conjugates of porphyrins and bile acids as ligands to bind to tumor expressed saccharides. Bile acid-porphyrin conjugates were tested for recognition of saccharides that are typically present on malignant tumor cells. Fluorescence microscopy, in vitro PDT cell killing, and PDT of subcutaneous 4T1 mouse tumors is reported. High selectivity for saccharide cancer markers and cancer cells was observed. This in vivo and in vitro study demonstrated high potential use for these compounds in targeted photodynamic therapy.

Cell wall mannoproteins during the population growth phases in Saccharomyces cerevisiae.

Mannoproteins from cell walls of Saccharomyces cerevisiae synthesized at successive stages of the population growth cycle have been solubilized with Zymolyase and subsequently analyzed. The major change along the population cycle concerned a large size mannoprotein material; the size of the newly-synthesized molecules varied from 120,000–500,000 (mean of about 200,000) at early exponential phase to 250,000–350,000 (mean of about 300,000) at late exponential phase. Abstract The dynamics of chondriome changes in oogenesis of the sea urchinParacentrotus lividuswere studied by electron microscopy. An oocyte-enriched fraction obtained by gonad mechanical dissociation without protease treatment was used. The shape, size and arrangement of mitochondria (Mt) in cells were quantitatively analysed on the basis of data from reconstruction experiments, with serial sections performed using a specific computer program.
