Analysis of pesticide residues in fruit and vegetables by matrix solid phase dispersion (MSPD) and different gas chromatography element-selective det…

1995

A comparison between different element selective detectors for the determination of organophosphorus and organochlorine pesticide residues, from fruit and vegetables, was performed by capillary GC with electron capture detector (ECD), nitrogen phosphorus detector (NPD), flame photometric detector (FPD) in the sulphur and phosphorus modes, and mass spectrometry detector (MSD) in selected ion monitoring (SIM) mode. Pesticides were extracted from the different foodstuffs by Matrix Solid Phase Dispersion (MSPD). Recoveries of 41–108 % with relative standard deviation of 2–14 % in the concentration range 0.5–10 μg L−1 were obtained in oranges, lemons, grapefruit, pears, plums, lettuces and tomat…

Antibiotics and Resistance: A Fatal Attraction

2013

When penicillin and other classes of antibiotics were discovered and used to treat infectious diseases human morbidity and mortality due to infective microorganisms were successfully contrasted. However, almost as soon as antibacterial drugs were introduced in clinics, bacterial resistance spread. From a biological and microbiological viewpoint, antibacterial drug resistance is a fascinating aspect of molecular evolution, and resistome concept has been introduced to shed light on driving forces that control the spreading and maintenance of resistance genes within microbial populations. Despite the wide range of chemical complexity of antibiotics, there is a restricted number of modes of act…

Pre-invasion history and demography shape the genetic variation in the insecticide resistance-related acetylcholinesterase 2 gene in the invasive Col…

2012

Abstract Background Invasive pest species offers a unique opportunity to study the effects of genetic architecture, demography and selection on patterns of genetic variability. Invasive Colorado potato beetle (Leptinotarsa decemlineata) populations have experienced a rapid range expansion and intense selection by insecticides. By comparing native and invasive beetle populations, we studied the origins of organophosphate (OP) resistance-associated mutations in the acetylcholinesterase 2 (AChE2) gene, and the role of selection and demography on its genetic variability. Results Analysis of three Mexican, two US and five European populations yielded a total of 49 haplotypes. Contrary to the exp…

High pressure liquid chromatography resolution of racemic mixtures of chiral tricarbonyl arene chromium(0) and cyclopentadienyl-titanium(IV) complexes

1998

Abstract Enantiomers of chiral tricarbonyl arene chromium(0) and cyclopentadienyl-titanium(IV) complexes have been separated by high pressure liquid chromatography employing a Chiralcel OD (Daicel) column, eluting with hexane/2-propanol mixtures. The capacity factors ( k ) and selectivity factors ( α ) concerning the separation of these compounds have been determined. The resolution of tricarbonyl( η 6 -methyl o -acetylbenzoate)chromium ( IV ), was carried out on semipreparative scale: a comparison of the CD spectra of the enantiomers IVa and IVb with that reported in the literature for a similar complex allowed to establish the absolute configuration [( 1R )] for the most retained enantiom…

A PLE-based resolution of cocaine, pseudococaine, and 6- and 7-methoxylated cocaine analogues

1996

Abstract The enzymatic hydrolysis of racemic cocaine and cocaine analogues using pig liver esterase (PLE) is shown to afford a practical means for achieving their chemical resolution. This reaction was found to proceed not only with good enantioselectivity, but with an interesting chemoselectivity as well.

Comparative modelling study on enantioresolution of structurally unrelated compounds with amylose-based chiral stationary phases in reversed phase li…

2020

[EN] Polysaccharide-based chiral stationary phases (CSPs) are the most used chiral selectors in HPLC. These CSPs can be used in normal, polar organic and aqueous-organic mobile phases. However, normal and polar organic mobile phases are not adequate for chiral separation of polar compounds, for the analysis of aqueous samples and for MS detection. In these situations, reversed phase conditions, without the usual non-volatile additives incompatible with MS detection, are preferable. Moreover, in most of the reported chiral chromatographic methods, retention is too large for routine work. In this paper, the chiral separation of 53 structurally unrelated compounds is studied using three commer…

Multiscale Model Selection for High-Frequency Financial Data of a Large Tick Stock by Means of the Jensen–Shannon Metric

2014

Modeling financial time series at different time scales is still an open challenge. The choice of a suitable indicator quantifying the distance between the model and the data is therefore of fundamental importance for selecting models. In this paper, we propose a multiscale model selection method based on the Jensen–Shannon distance in order to select the model that is able to better reproduce the distribution of price changes at different time scales. Specifically, we consider the problem of modeling the ultra high frequency dynamics of an asset with a large tick-to-price ratio. We study the price process at different time scales and compute the Jensen–Shannon distance between the original…

ChemInform Abstract: Asymmetric Synthesis of Fluorinated Amino Macrolactones Through Ring-Closing Metathesis.

2008

The synthesis of new chiral fluorinated amino and azamacrolactones of types 1 and 2 is described. A ring-closing metathesis (RCM) reaction constitutes the key step in this methodology, which uses fluorinated amino alcohols 7 as starting materials. The influence of the CF2 group, which is located in the alpha-position relative to the carbon bearing the amino group, on the efficiency of the RCM reaction is noteworthy. This method allows for the preparation of the desired fluorinated macrolactones in excellent yields.

An integrated framework for risk profiling of breast cancer patients following surgery.

2006

Objective: An integrated decision support framework is proposed for clinical oncologists making prognostic assessments of patients with operable breast cancer. The framework may be delivered over a web interface. It comprises a triangulation of prognostic modelling, visualisation of historical patient data and an explanatory facility to interpret risk group assignments using empirically derived Boolean rules expressed directly in clinical terms. Methods and materials: The prognostic inferences in the interface are validated in a multicentre longitudinal cohort study by modelling retrospective data from 917 patients recruited at Christie Hospital, Wilmslow between 1983 and 1989 and predictin…
