Effect of different antioxidants in experimental alcoholic optic neuropathy

Purpose To establish the possible beneficial effects of three synthetic antioxidants: S-adenosil-L-methionine (SAMe), N-acetyl-L-cysteine (NAC) and Ebselen in optic nerve damage following chronic ethanol feeding in adult rats. Methods Twenty male Sprague-Dawley rats (five groups of four animals each) were fed a liquid, ethanol-containing diet with littermates given isocaloric amounts of ethanol-free diet serving as controls. Antioxidants were administered by dissolving them in the liquid diet at 0.4 mg/ml (SAMe), 0.163 mg/ml (NAC) and 5.33 mg/ml (Ebselen). Abstract Healthy controls are subjects without the disease being studied but may have other conditions indirectly affecting outcome. In the present epidemics of obesity a few subjects with undiagnosed nonalcoholic fatty liver disease enter clinical studies as controls, producing biased results. Stricter selection criteria should be considered to prevent this risk.

Consensus could be reached that there is overwhelming evidence of preclinical neuroprotection. However, the evidence of neuroprotection/neurorescue under clinical conditions is limited. Lessons from clinical trials designed to show neuroprotection (selegiline, amantadine, dopamine agonists) demonstrate that with the drugs available neuroprotection/neurorescue has to start as early as possible. Objective: This study aimed to analyze the effects of a six-month therapy with ulipristal acetate (UPA) on myoma size and endometrial thickness in premenopausal women. Material and methods: Seventy-four women undergoing conservative therapy with UPA were enrolled for this study. All women underwent transvaginal ultrasound evaluation to assess the endometrial thickness, and the number and size of myomas at the beginning and after six months. Abstract The objective was to determine whether individual short-term memory capacities for odor are related to performance at discriminative tests. Two groups of 11 subjects were formed with different short-term memory for odor but equivalent sensitivity toward benzaldehyde, the aromatic compound to be detected in discriminative tests. The subject sensitivity was determined by d ′ values, derived from a detection task. Memory span for odors was the largest number of odors memorized at once. Management of GO is often suboptimal, largely because available treatments do not target pathogenic mech anisms of the disease. Treatment should rely on a thorough assessment of the activity and severity of GO and its impact on the patient's quality of life.
