Library instruction – Not just for our users: Skills upgrading for librarians as a way of increasing self-confidence

In the time period between the two surveys, a skills upgrading programme was carried out. The aim of the second survey is to examine if the librarians’ confidence has increased after the yearlong training programme. Even thoug…
Perceived teacher support and language anxiety in Polish secondary school EFL learners
2011
The teacher’s role is vital, both in respect to achieving academic goals, and with regard to the regulation of emotional and social processes. Positive perceptions of teacher support can endorse psychological wellness, and help maintain students’ academic interests, higher academic achievement and more positive peer relationships. The teacher who shows understanding, empathy and consistency in their behavior helps students start forming an identity, which will assist them in coping with stress and anxiety directly connected with the foreign language learning process (language anxiety). The main aim of this research is to investigate the relationship between teacher support and language anxi…
Adding sensor-free intention-based affective support to an Intelligent Tutoring System
2017
Abstract Emotional factors considerably influence learning and academic performance. In this paper, we validate the hypothesis that learning platforms can adjust their response to have an effect on the learner’s pleasure, arousal and/or dominance, without using a specific emotion detection system during operation. To this end, we have enriched an existing Intelligent Tutoring System (ITS) by designing a module that is able to regulate the level of help provided to maximize valence, arousal or autonomy as desired. The design of this module followed a two-stage methodology. In the first stage, the ITS was adapted to collect data from several groups of students in primary education, by providi…
Kokeilu kirjoittamisen itsearvioinnista tietokoneella
2001
This article discusses an experiment which we are conducting in the field of Finnish as a second language. We are developing an Internet-based program that learners of Finnish can use to assess their own writing skills. The program code originally comes from the DIALANG project, which is developing a diagnostic language assessment system for 14 languages for the Internet. We selected two new writing tasks for the program, and constructed related sets of benchmark performances to enable the learners to assess their own abilities. In the article, we first discuss the concepts of learner autonomy and self-assessment, in other words the theoretical framework that underlies the program. This is …
Self-rated health and self-assessed change in health in elderly men and women — A five-year longitudinal study
1998
The purpose of the present investigation was two fold: (1) to examine how men and women self-rate their health as they age from 75 to 80 yr and how they assess the change in their health over the five year period; and (2) to ascertain how self-assessed change in health over the follow-up period corresponded to the difference in self-ratings of health between the assessments performed at baseline and at follow-up. The study was part of the Evergreen-project with the study group comprising all inhabitants born in 1914 (N = 388) living in Jyväskylä, central Finland. At baseline, 93.4%, and at follow-up, 93.3%, of those who were eligible participated in the interview. Self-rated health, when as…
Physical Activity Is Related with Cartilage Quality in Women with Knee Osteoarthritis
2017
Purpose To study the relationship between 12-month leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) level and changes in estimated biochemical composition of tibiofemoral cartilage in postmenopausal women with mild knee osteoarthritis (OA). Methods Originally, 87 volunteer postmenopausal women, age 60 to 68 yr, with mild knee OA (Kellgren Lawrence I/II and knee pain) participated in a randomized controlled, 4-month aquatic training trial (RCT), after which 76 completed the 12-month postintervention follow-up period. Self-reported LTPA was collected along the 12-month period using a diary from which MET task hours per month were calculated. Participants were divided into MET task hour tertiles: 1, lowe…
CHALLENGES AND SOLUTIONS OF TVET QUALITY ASSURANCE IN MONGOLIA
2020
Technical and vocational education and training (TVET) makes a significant contribution to economic competitiveness in a knowledge-based economy. The main challenge for vocational education and training is to meet the changing skill needs in the labour market. In order to balance labour market supply and demand by constantly diversifying TVET customer base, it is necessary to increase the key role played by vocational education and training in economic competitiveness and social inclusion. The considerable economic growth in Mongolia does not have a positive impact on the creation of new jobs and poverty reduction. This implies that the Mongolian education sector was unable to produce requi…
