Activities for the glucuronidation of 1-naphthol, morphine and bilirubin as well as for the sulfation of 2-naphthol have been determined in homogenates of parenchymal, Kupffer and endothelial cells isolated from livers of untreated and Aroclor 1254-pretreated rats. In addition, Western blot analyses using different polyclonal antibodies against UDP-glucuronosyltransferases (UDP-GTs) were performed with similar preparations. All enzymes under investigation were expressed at high levels in liver parenchymal cells. Background. Severe stress experienced in early life may have long-term effects on adult physiological and psychological health and well-being. We studied physical and psychosocial functioning in late adulthood in subjects separated temporarily from their parents in childhood during World War II. Methods. The 1803 participants belong to the Helsinki Birth Cohort Study, born 1934–44. Of them, 267 (14.8%) had been evacuated abroad in childhood during WWII and the remaining subjects served as controls. Abstract Extrahepatic viral load in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of patients with hepatitis B virus (HBV) is still under debate. In this study, HBV infection rates and viral titers were examined within all PBMC subpopulations using limiting dilution-PCR (LD-PCR). PBMCs of patients with acute or chronic hepatitis B were separated by magnetic beads in monocytes, B-cells, CD4+ T-cells, CD8+ T-cells, and NK cells.
