Progress in ISOL target–ion source systems

2008

The heart of every ISOL (isotope separation on-line) facility is its target and ion source system. Its efficiency, selectivity and rapidity is decisive for the production of intense and pure ion beams of short-lived isotopes. Recent progress in ISOL target and ion source technology is discussed at the examples of radioactive ion beams of exotic zinc and tin isotopes that were purified by isothermal chromatography and molecular sideband separation respectively. An outlook is given to which other elements these purification methods are applicable.

CORRELATIONS AMONG FORWARD RETURNS IN THE NORDIC ELECTRICITY MARKET

2009

I analyze empirical correlations of electricity forward returns from the perspective of a random field model that specifies the correlations in terms of the temporal separation between forward maturities. It turns out that temporal separation cannot fully account for the empirical forward return correlations. Specifically, the relation between correlations and temporal separation does not seem to be invariant across segments of the electricity forward market or trading periods.

Value preserving portfolio strategies in continuous-time models

1997

We present a new approach for continuous-time portfolio strategies that relies on the principle of value preservation. This principle was developed by Hellwig (1987) for general economic decision and pricing models. The key idea is that an investor should try to consume only so much of his portfolio return that the future ability of the portfolio should be kept constant over time. This ensures that the portfolio will be a long lasting source of income. We define a continuous-time market setting to apply the idea of Hellwig to securities markets with continuous trading and examine existence (and uniqueness) of value-preserving strategies in some widely used market models. Further, we discuss…

Prepulse inhibition can predict the motivational effects of cocaine in female mice exposed to maternal separation

2020

The prepulse inhibition (PPI) of the startle response can identify the rodents that are more sensitive to the effects of cocaine. Mice with a lower PPI presented a higher vulnerability to the effects of cocaine and a higher susceptibility to developing a substance use disorder (SUD). Maternal separation with early weaning (MSEW) is a relevant animal model to induce motivational alterations throughout life. Nevertheless, only a few studies on females exist, even though they are more vulnerable to stress- and cocaine-related problems. Hence, the aim of the present study was to evaluate the ability of PPI to identify females with a greater vulnerability to the long-term consequences of early s…

Large scale preparation of human MHC class II+ integrin beta(1)+ Tregs.

2010

Abstract The human CD4 + CD25 + FoxP3 + regulatory T cell population (Tregs) contains both MHC class II + and MHC class II − cells. MHC class II + Tregs belong to the integrin α 4 β 1 + subpopulation and exclusively execute contact-dependent suppressive activity. Here we present a method optimized for isolation of these MHC class II expressing Tregs from large leukaphereses products using magnetic microbeads that achieves a reproducible purity of more than 90% and enables the use of this small-sized Treg population in pre-clinical application and basic research.

First-principles modelling of complex perovskite (Ba1-xSrx)(Co1-yFey)O3-δ for solid oxide fuel cell and gas separation membrane applications

2010

The results of the first principles spin-polarized DFT calculations of the atomic and electronic structure of a complex perovskite (Ba1-xSrx)(Co1-yFey)O3-δ (BSCF) used as a cathode material for solid oxide fuel cells (SOFC) and gas separation membranes are presented and discussed. The formation energies of oxygen vacancies are found to be considerably smaller than in other magnetic perovskites, e.g. (La,Sr)MnO3, which explains the experimentally observed strong deviation of this material from stoichiometry. The presence of oxygen vacancies induces a local charge redistribution, associated with the local lattice perturbation, and expansion of the equilibrium volume, in line with the experime…

Chemical separation and MC-ICPMS analysis of U, Th, Pa and Ra isotope ratios of carbonates

2018

Diagenetic alteration of fossil reef corals may have severe effects on the reliability of 230Th/U-ages. The widely applied criteria introduced to test for the reliability of coral 230Th/U-ages are often not sufficient to identify all altered ages. The combination of 230Th/U- with 231Pa/U-dating has been suggested as a promising method to identify altered ages. Furthermore, 226Ra/230Th ratios can provide information about the diagenetic history during the last 10 000 years. Here we present a method to chemically separate U, Th, Pa and Ra from the same aliquot of a carbonate sample. The isotope ratios of our mixed U–Th–Pa–Ra spike are calibrated using a secular equilibrium material treated in…

Comparison of three solid-phase extraction processes in quantification of ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin in pork meat

2012

Due to strong implications for food safety, control of fluoroquinolones residues in swine meat should be undertaken to verify compliance of the contamination levels with the maximum residue limits recently updated by Commission Regulation (EU) No. 37/2010 of 22 December 2009. Solid-phase extraction is widely used in antibiotic analysis in food of animal origin. In this study, the results of a comparative study using different types of solid-phase extraction columns, HLB, MCX, and MAX, for ciprofloxacin and enrofloxacin analysis, in pork meat, are presented. In addition, diverse sample treatments for defatting, precipitate proteins, eliminate cations, and increase the ionic strength, were us…

Nonnegative signal factorization with learnt instrument models for sound source separation in close-microphone recordings

2013

Close-microphone techniques are extensively employed in many live music recordings, allowing for interference rejection and reducing the amount of reverberation in the resulting instrument tracks. However, despite the use of directional microphones, the recorded tracks are not completely free from source interference, a problem which is commonly known as microphone leakage. While source separation methods are potentially a solution to this problem, few approaches take into account the huge amount of prior information available in this scenario. In fact, besides the special properties of close-microphone tracks, the knowledge on the number and type of instruments making up the mixture can al…
