Cellusim: Un simulador 3D en entorno videojuego para la docencia del laboratorio de cultivos celulares

2018

[EN] Cell cultures allow the maintenance of living cells outside the body. This technique is fundamental to study the biological, biochemical and physiological properties of cells and can be used as an experimental model in vitro in the field of biomedical research. The teaching in the laboratory of this technique presents numerous difficulties at a practical, logistical and economic level. On the other hand, the learning of cell culture protocols is an important part of the student's training in Cell Biology. Based on the routine practices carried out within a cell culture laboratory, we have developed the virtual 3D simulator of a cell culture laboratory "Cellusim". In "Cellusim" you can …

A backward sweep method for power flow solution in distribution networks

2010

Abstract A methodology for the analysis of radial or weakly meshed distribution systems supplying voltage dependent loads is here developed. The solution process is iterative and, at each step, loads are simulated by means of impedances. Therefore, at each iteration, it is necessary to solve a network made up only of impedances; for this kind of network, all the voltages and currents can be expressed as linear functions of a single unknown current (in radial systems) or of two unknown currents for each independent mesh (for meshed systems). The methodology has been called “backward” since the unique equation, in case of radial network, and the linear system of equations, in case of meshed n…

A comparison of statistical methods and multi-criteria decision making to map flood hazard susceptibility in Northern Iran

2018

In north of Iran, flood is one of the most important natural hazards that annually inflict great economic damages on humankind infrastructures and natural ecosystems. The Kiasar watershed is known as one of the critical areas in north of Iran, due to numerous floods and waste of water and soil resources, as well as related economic and ecological losses. However, a comprehensive and systematic research to identify flood-prone areas, which may help to establish management and conservation measures, has not been carried out yet. Therefore, this study tested four methods: evidential belief function (EBF), frequency ratio (FR), Technique for Order Preference by Similarity To ideal Solution (TOP…

Volatiles in pantellerite magmas: A case study of the Green Tuff Plinian eruption (Island of Pantelleria, Italy)

2013

Abstract The Green Tuff (GT) Plinian eruption, the largest in magnitude at Pantelleria, erupted 3 to 7 km3 DRE of pantellerite magma and a small volume of trachyte. Fifty-nine anorthoclase-hosted melt inclusions from the two basal pumice members were analyzed by FT-IR spectroscopy in order to assess the pre-eruptive H2O content in the pantellerite melt. Microanalytical methods were used to determine major element, Cl, F and S contents. Melt inclusions and glassy groundmasses have a nearly homogeneous pantelleritic composition (peralkaline index = 1.9-2.2) and variable water contents ranging from 1.4 to as high as 4.2 wt %, i.e. much higher than the 1.4 wt % of earlier published studies. The…

The chlorine content is constant at about 1 wt %. Combined Cl and H2O data were used to estimate a confining pressure of about 50 MPa (depth around 2-3 km) for the GT magma chamber. The chamber was characterized by a compositional zoning with a dominant pantellerite overlying a trachyte magma. Soon after the GT eruption intra-caldera volcanism was dominated by the eruption of voluminous trachyte lavaflows while pantellerite melt production resumed after about 20 ka with numerous low-volume mildly explosive (Strombolian) to effusive eruptions. Comparison with data from the literature reveals that despite the differentexplosivity the post-caldera Strombolian eruptions and the GT Plinian eruption were fed by pantelleritic magmas with similar water contents. Chlorine and CO2contents suggest that the young magma reservoirs feeding the Strombolian to effusive activity were deeper (h≥4.5 km) than the much larger (based on erupted volumes) magma chamber which fed the GT eruptionGeologyMelt inclusionsJournal of Volcanology and Geothermal Research

The aim of this article is to underline the importance of recover…

Mapping risk factors for depression across the lifespan: An umbrella review of evidence from meta-analyses and Mendelian randomization studies

2018

The development of depression may involve a complex interplay of environmental and genetic risk factors. PubMed and PsycInfo databases were searched from inception through August 3, 2017, to identify meta-analyses and Mendelian randomization (MR) studies of environmental risk factors associated with depression. For each eligible meta-analysis, we estimated the summary effect size and its 95% confidence interval (CI) by random-effects modeling, the 95% prediction interval, heterogeneity with I 2 , and evidence of small-study effects and excess significance bias. Seventy meta-analytic reviews met the eligibility criteria and provided 134 meta-analyses for associations from 1283 primary studie…

2019

Highlights • CMV DNA is frequently detected in BAL fluid specimens from allo-HSCT. • CMV DNA detection in BAL fluids is comparable across pneumonia etiologies. • CMV DNA loads in BAL fluids are comparable across pneumonia etiologies. • CMV DNA load in BAL may predict attributable-pneumonia mortality.

Investigation of long-range female sex pheromone of the European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis: chemical, electrophysiological, and field s…

2004

The European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis, is an important pest of agricultural and horticultural crops throughout Europe. Adult male L. rugulipennis were previously shown to be attracted to traps baited with live virgin females, which suggests the females produce a sex pheromone. Volatiles produced by virgin female L. rugulipennis were shown to contain three components, hexyl butyrate, (E)-2-hexenyl butyrate, and (E)-4-oxo-2-hexenal which elicited electroantennographic (EAG) responses from males in analyses by linked gas chromatography–electroantennography (GC-EAG). They were produced in 1.5:1:0.08 ratio, respectively, by single females. Collections from 1, 2, or 4 virgin female…

Evaluation of the clinical and histological effectiveness of isoretinoin in the therapy of oral leukoplakia. Ten years of experience: is management s…

2006

Various studies have evaluated the therapeutic effectiveness of vitamin A derivatives in the treatment of oral leukoplakia (OL). Not all the studies have shown concordant results. The aim of our study, which has a 10-year follow-up, was to test the effectiveness of topical therapy based on 0.18% isotretinoin by comparing it with that most frequently used, i.e., at 0.05% concentration. Forty patients with an established diagnosis of OL were involved in the study. The patients were randomly divided into two groups and the drug was administered topically at 0.05% and 0.18% concentrations. The drug was applied twice a day for 3 consecutive months; then it was suspended for 1 month, and the biop…
