Muscular transcriptome in postmenopausal women with or without hormone replacement.

2007

The loss of muscle mass and strength with aging is well characterized, but our knowledge of the molecular mechanisms underlying the development of sarcopenia remains incomplete. Although menopause is often accompanied with first signs of age-associated changes in muscle structure and function, the effects of hormone replacement therapy (HRT) or menopause-related decline in estrogen production in the muscles of postmenopausal women is not well understood. Furthermore the knowledge of the global transcriptional changes that take place in skeletal muscle in relation to estrogen status has thus far been completely lacking. We used a randomized double-blinded study design together with an explor…

The book focuses on stimulating issues, in particular the construction of holiness models that reflect and strengthen the contemporary religious sensibility, or maybe even do creat…

GLP-2: What do we know? What are we going to discover?

2014

Glucagon-like peptide 2 [GLP-2] is a 33-amino acid peptide released from the mucosal enteroendocrine L-cells of the intestine. The actions of GLP-2 are transduced by the GLP-2 receptor [GLP-2R], which is localized in the neurons of the enteric nervous system but not in the intestinal epithelium, indicating an indirect mechanism of action. GLP-2 is well known for its trophic role within the intestine and interest in GLP-2 is now reviving based on the approval of the GLP-2R agonist for treatment of short bowel syndrome [SBS]. Recently it also seems to be involved in glucose homeostasis. The aim of this review is to outline the importance of neuroendocrine peptides, specifically of GLP-2 in th…

Associations between personality, sports participation and athletic success. A comparison of Big Five in sporting and non-sporting adults

2018

Abstract The present study investigates whether the Big Five personality traits are different among diverse sports populations. A sample of 881 male athletes and non-athletes completed a self-report questionnaire measuring their personality traits. The Exploratory Structure Equation Modeling (ESEM) approach is adopted to test measurement invariance and mean differences among groups. The results indicate that athletes who had experienced the most success in their sport scored higher than non-athletes in each personality dimension of the Big Five, with the exception of openness, while less successful athletes scored higher than non-athletes only in extraversion and agreeableness. The more suc…

Giovanni Boccaccio fra il Geta e l’Alda

2020

This essay aims to record and study the quotations, suggestions, echoes and rewrites of two 12th century Latin "elegiac comedies", Vitalis of Blois' Geta and William of Blois' Alda, made by Giovanni Boccaccio in his works (notably the Elegia di madonna Fiammetta, the Amorosa visione, the Ninfale Fiesolano and, obviously, …

Aldehyde dehydrogenase and HSP90 co-localize in human glioblastoma biopsy cells.

2013

The concept of a stem cell subpopulation as understood from normal epithelial tissue or bone marrow function has been extended to our understanding of cancer tissue and is now the target of treatment efforts specifically directed to this subpopulation. In glioblastoma, as well as in other cancers, increased expression of aldehyde dehydrogenase (ALDH) has been found localized within a minority sub-population of tumor cells which demonstrate stem cell properties. A separate body of research associated increased expression of heat-shock protein-90 (HSP90) with stem cell attributes. We present here results from our initial immunohistochemistry study of human glioblastoma biopsy tissue where bot…

Parallel fictitious domain method for a non‐linear elliptic neumann boundary value problem

1999

Parallelization of the algebraic fictitious domain method is considered for solving Neumann boundary value problems with variable coefficients. The resulting method is applied to the parallel solution of the subsonic full potential flow problem which is linearized by the Newton method. Good scalability of the method is demonstrated on a Cray T3E distributed memory parallel computer using MPI in communication. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Anaphylaktischer Schock nach Lipid-Austauschchromatographie bei einer Patientin mit angeborenem IgA-Mangel

1995

We report on a 59-year-old woman patient with selective IgA deficiency and familial hypercholesterinaemia. To lower elevated LDL levels in the patient's blood, immunoadsorption therapy with sheep-anti-human polyclonal antibodies coupled to sepharose columns was administered. During the procedure, the patient developed an anaphylactic shock requiring intensive care treatment. The patient's history revealed a fresh cell therapy with fetal sheep cells 10 years previously. Intracutaneous testing confirmed sensitization to sheep immunoglobulin, which was the most likely reason for the anaphylactic shock.

An AmI-Based Software Architecture Enabling Evolutionary Computation in Blended Commerce: The Shopping Plan Application

2015

This work describes an approach to synergistically exploit ambient intelligence technologies, mobile devices, and evolutionary computation in order to support blended commerce or ubiquitous commerce scenarios. The work proposes a software architecture consisting of three main components: linked data for e-commerce, cloud-based services, and mobile apps. The three components implement a scenario where a shopping mall is presented as an intelligent environment in which customers use NFC capabilities of their smartphones in order to handle e-coupons produced, suggested, and consumed by the abovesaid environment. The main function of the intelligent environment is to help customers define shopp…

Stabilization of hsp70 mRNA on prolonged cell exposure to hypertonicity

2002

AbstractProlonged exposure of 3T3 cells to 0.5 osM hypertonic medium induced the accumulation of hsp70 mRNAs. This increase in mRNA levels required active protein synthesis. A weak and transient activation of heat shock factor 1 (HSF1) was noted, but it was temporally uncoupled to the accumulation of the hsp70 mRNAs. Nuclear run-on assay and transfection experiments showed that hsp70 gene transcription was not affected by hypertonicity. ActD chase experiments showed that during hypertonic treatment, degradation of hsp70 mRNAs was markedly reduced. This effect did not appear to be a general phenomenon since the increase in mRNA level of another gene induced by hypertonicity (ATA2 transporter…
