A language socialisation perspective on Swedish immersion in Finland : Students, teachers, and parents as key actors
2022
Abstract This retrospective review applies a language socialisation perspective in examining the findings of a four-year research project on Swedish immersion in Finland. Findings from nine sub-studies within the project are reported with a point-of-view from three key actors’ (teachers, students, and parents) language socialisation processes. Results show that a special feature of immersion teacher socialisation is its continuous attention toward the additive multilingual nature of immersion education, which requires sustained attention to multilingual language use and development. Students in Swedish immersion are socialised into the use of multiple languages in school and act as socialis…

How listening to music and engagement with other media provide a sense of belonging: An exploratory study of social surrogacy
2020
The social surrogacy hypothesis holds that people resort to temporary substitutes, so-called social surrogates, if direct social interaction is not possible. In this exploratory study, we investigate social motives for listening to music in comparison to watching TV and reading fiction. Thirty statements about possible social reasons for the engagement with media were compiled. After 374 participants had rated their agreement with those statements, they were reduced to seven categories: Company, Shared experiences, Understanding others, Reminiscence, Isolation, Group identity, and Culture. The results propose that music is used as temporary substitute for social interaction alongside TV pr…
Being Itself and the Being of Beings : Reading Aristotle’s Critique of Parmenides (Physics 1.3) after Metaphysics
2018
The essay studies Aristotle’s critique of Parmenides (Physics 1.3) in the light of the Heideggerian account of Platonic-Aristotelian metaphysics as an approach to being (Sein) in terms of beings (das Seiende). Aristotle’s critique focuses on the presuppositions of the Parmenidean thesis of the unity of being. It is argued that a close study of the presuppositions of Aristotle’s own critique reveals an important difference between the Aristotelian metaphysical framework and the Parmenidean “protometaphysical” approach. The Parmenides fragments indicate being as such in the sense of the pure, undifferentiated “is there” (τὸ ἐόν)—as the intelligible accessibility of meaningful reality to think…

A study into the neural processing of natural music in the brains of musicians and non-musicians by means of magnetoencephalography
2015
Studying music processing in the brain is a complex task, which involves multidisciplinary skills to achieve the most constructive results. The current experiment investigated MEG brain signals of musicians, music amateurs and non-musicians while they were listening to three different complete music pieces. Brain signals were also recorded while the subjects were resting with their eyes closed and eyes open. The present study aimed to investigate possible differences between neural responses depending on musical expertise and experimental condition (listening vs. resting). These differences were expected in the auditory and motor brain areas. Several ANOVAs were conducted for the data analy…
