The high time resolution observations of the X-ray sky hold the key to a number of diagnostics of fundamental physics, some of which are unaccessible to other types of investigations, such as those based on imaging and spectroscopy. Biosilica, a biocompatible, natural inorganic polymer that is formed by an enzymatic, silicatein-mediated reaction in siliceous sponges to build up their inorganic skeleton, has been shown to be morphogenetically active and to induce mineralization of human osteoblast-like cells (SaOS-2) in vitro. In the present study, we prepared beads (microspheres) by encapsulation of β-tricalcium phosphate [β-TCP], either alone (control) or supplemented with silica or silicatein, into the biodegradable copolymer poly(d,l-lactide-co-glycolide) [PLGA]. Differently doped areas in silicon can show strong electron-optical contrast in dependence on the dopant concentration and surface conditions. Photoemission electron microscopy is a powerful surface-sensitive technique suitable for fast imaging of doping-induced contrast in semiconductors. We report on the observation of Si (100) samples with n- and p-type doped patterns (with the dopant concentration varied from 10(16) to 10(19) cm(-3)) on a p- and n-type substrate (doped to 10(15) cm(-3)), respectively. Histochemical and electron microscopic analysis of spiculogenesis in the demosponge Suberites domuncula.

The skeleton of demosponges is built of spicules consisting of biosilica. Using the primmorph system from Suberites domuncula, we demonstrate that silicatein, the biosilica-synthesizing enzyme, and silicase, the catabolic enzyme, are colocalized at the surface of growing spicules as well as in the axial filament located in the axial canal. It is assumed that these two enzymes are responsible for the deposition of biosilica. In search of additional potential structural molecules that might guide the mineralization process during spiculogenesis to species-specific spicules, electron microscopic studies with antibodies against galectin and silicatein were performed. Abstract A projectile Coulomb-excitation experiment was performed at the radioactive ion beam facility HIE-ISOLDE at CERN. The radioactive 140Nd and 142Sm ions were post accelerated to the energy of 4.62 MeV/A and impinged on a 1.45 mg/cm2-thin 208Pb target. The γ rays depopulating the Coulomb-excited states were recorded by the HPGe-array MINIBALL. The scattered charged particles were detected by a double-sided silicon strip detector in forward direction. Experimental γ-ray intensities were used for the determination of electromagnetic transition matrix elements. International audience; This paper describes the microfabrication and dynamic characterization of thick membranes providing a technological solution for microengines. The studied membranes are called hybrid fluid-membrane (HFM) and consist of two thin membranes that encapsulate an incompressible fluid. This work details the microelectromechanical system (MEMS) scalable fabrication and characterization of HFMs. The membranes are composite structures based on Silicon spiral springs embedded in a polymer (RTV silicone). Intrinsic generation of OH groups in dry silicon dioxide upon thermal treatments

We show the existence of an intrinsic generation mechanism of OH groups in synthetic dry silica upon thermal treatments. Samples are treated for ~160 h at 390 °C in He at 2.7 or 180 bar, and the growth of the OH IR absorption band at 3670 cm−1 is observed. An OH concentration of ~10^18 cm^−3 is estimated. Possible contributions of reactions with molecules absorbed from the atmosphere are excluded. Reactions with H2O already contained in the samples are rejected by IR measurements. The observed OH generation is attributed to the reaction of network sites with H2 already present in the material. Possible reaction paths are examined

Abstract We present a detailed ab initio study of the geometrical structure and torsional potential of p -disilanylbenzene and its methyl derivative p -(1,1′,2,2′-tetramethyldisilanyl)benzene. The geometries of the different conformers have been fully optimized at the Hartree-Fock 3-21G ∗ and 6-31G ∗ levels. In all cases, the most stable conformation corresponds to the conformer in which the phenylene group lies in a plane perpendicular to the four silicon atoms. The torsional potential curves calculated using the 3-21G ∗ and 6-31G ∗ basis sets show similar features. Surface functionalization of inorganic semiconductor substrates, particularly silicon, has focused attention toward many technologically important applications, involving photovoltaic energy, biosensing and catalysis. For such modification processes, oxide-free (H-terminated) silicon surfaces are highly required, and different chemical approaches have been described in the past decades. However, their reactivity is often poor, requiring long reaction times (2-18 h) or the use of UV light (10-30 min).
