Electronic Structures and Molecular Properties of Chalcogen Nitrides Se2N2 and SeSN2

2006

The electronic structures and molecular properties of S2N2 as well as the currently unknown chalcogen nitrides Se2N2 and SeSN2 have been studied using various ab initio and density functional methods. All molecules share a qualitatively similar electronic structure and can be primarily described as 2π-electron aromatics having minor singlet diradical character of 6−8% that can be attributed solely to the nitrogen atoms. This diradical character is manifested in the prediction of their molecular properties, in which coupled cluster and multiconfigurational approaches, as well as density functional methods, show the best performance. The conventional ab initio methods RHF and MP2 completely f…

Multispectral filter arrays: Recent advances and practical implementation

2014

Thanks to some technical progress in interferencefilter design based on different technologies, we can finally successfully implement the concept of multispectral filter array-based sensors. This article provides the relevant state-of-the-art for multispectral imaging systems and presents the characteristics of the elements of our multispectral sensor as a case study. The spectral characteristics are based on two different spatial arrangements that distribute eight different bandpass filters in the visible and near-infrared area of the spectrum. We demonstrate that the system is viable and evaluate its performance through sensor spectral simulation. Multispectral filter arrays: Recent advan…

Bi-2212 and Y123 highly curved single-crystal-like objects: whiskers, bows and ring-like structures

2012

High-temperature superconducting objects of Bi2Sr2CaCu2O8 and Y Ba2Cu3O7 highly curved in the ab-plane, such as curved/kinked whiskers, bows and ring-like structures, were obtained within a solid?liquid?solid (SLS) grass-like growth mechanism. As-grown objects are crystals with three-dimensional epitaxy similar to conventional single crystals: they can be viewed as crystal parts ?cut? from a conventional rectangular crystal. Between our curved objects and conventional crystals, whiskers or thin films there are some differences in the superconducting properties induced only by the shape factors and no new physics is observed. Some details of the growth mechanism are discussed, emphasizing cu…

SparseHC: A Memory-efficient Online Hierarchical Clustering Algorithm

2014

Computing a hierarchical clustering of objects from a pairwise distance matrix is an important algorithmic kernel in computational science. Since the storage of this matrix requires quadratic space with respect to the number of objects, the design of memory-efficient approaches is of high importance to this research area. In this paper, we address this problem by presenting a memory-efficient online hierarchical clustering algorithm called SparseHC. SparseHC scans a sorted and possibly sparse distance matrix chunk-by-chunk. Meanwhile, a dendrogram is built by merging cluster pairs as and when the distance between them is determined to be the smallest among all remaining cluster pairs. The k…

Gallium preference for the occupation of tetrahedral sites in Lu3(Al5-xGax)O12multicomponent garnet scintillators according to solid-state nuclear ma…

2019

Abstract In this study, the distributions of aluminum and gallium atoms over the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the garnet structure were investigated in mixed Lu3Al5-xGaxO12 crystals by using 27Al and 71Ga magic angle spinning nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and single crystal 71Ga NMR. The experimental study was supported by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT) in order to predict the trends in terms of the substitutions of Al by Ga in the mixed garnets. Both the experimental and theoretical results indicated the non-uniform distribution of Al and Ga over the tetrahedral and octahedral sites in the garnet structure, with a strong preference for Ga occupy…

The effects of antimicrobial sprays and mouthrinses on supragingival plaque regrowth: a comparative study.

2006

BACKGROUND: Due to the side effects of chlorhexidine digluconate (CHX) mouthrinsing, a spray has been proposed as an alternative method of CHX delivery to the oral cavity. The aim of this study was to investigate the plaque inhibitory effects of CHX, cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC), and triclosan (TRN) delivered by sprays and mouthrinses. METHODS: The study was an observer-masked, randomized cross-over design balanced for carryover effects, involving 15 healthy volunteers in a 4-day plaque regrowth model. Products being tested (0.2% CHX, 0.12% CHX, 0.05% CPC, and 0.03% TRN) were used both as sprays and mouthrinses. A saline solution served as a negative control. On day 1, subjects received p…

TP53 mutations and S-phase fraction but not DNA-ploidy are independent prognostic indicators in laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma

2005

To prospectively evaluate the prognostic significance of TP53, H-, K-, and N-Ras mutations, DNA-ploidy and S-phase fraction (SPF) in patients affected by locally advanced laryngeal squamous cell carcinoma (LSCC). Eight-one patients (median follow-up was 71 months) who underwent resective surgery for primary operable locally advanced LSCC were analyzed. Tumor DNA was screened for mutational analysis by PCR/SSCP and sequencing. DNA-ploidy and SPF were performed by flow cytometric analyses. Thirty-six patients (44%) had, at least, a mutation in the TP53 gene. Of them, 22% (8/36) had double mutations and 3% (1/36) had triple mutations. In total, 46 TP53 mutations were observed. The majority (41…

Experimental Investigation on Stiffness and Strength of Single-Lap Z-Pinned Joints in a Laminated CFRP Stress-Ribbon Strip

2016

Carbon fiber-reinforced polymer (carbon-polymer) is an advanced lightweight composite material with high strength and excellent resistance to corrosion and fatigue. Over the past decades, application of fiber-reinforced polymers has been spread from the aerospace to other branches of industry such as automobile and civil engineering. Unidirectional carbon-polymers have a high potential for replacing steel in tensile members. Recently, the first carbonpolymer stress-ribbon bridge has been constructed in Germany. The non-laminated strip-loop carbon-polymer thin strips were used as the load bearing components in this bridge. In comparison with the laminated components, the applied cables are c…
