Gas chromatography-mass spectrometry characterization of the varnish and glue of an ancient 18th century double bass.
2007
A GC–MS investigation is conducted on the double bass “Panormus”, property of Conservatorio di Musica “Vincenzo Bellini” in Palermo. The most important components of the varnish (fatty acids) and of the glue (proteinaceous amino acids), with which the musical instrument was treated in the past, are determined. The analyses are carried out by prior derivatization of fatty acids by acidic methanol and of amino acids by acidic methanol and trifluoroacetic anhydride (TFAA). Analytes identification is achieved by direct comparison with several reference materials and the use of a digitized library.

Effects of gadolinium and cadmium on the electrically evoked release of 45calcium from the isolated rat neurohypophysis.
1988
Isolated neural lobes of the rat pituitary gland were fixed by their stalks to a platinum wire electrode. They were loaded with 45calcium and then superfused with radioactivity-free Krebs-solution. The efflux of 45calcium into the superfusion medium was determined. After 54–60 min of superfusion the spontaneous outflow of 45calcium was 2.03%/min of the tissue 45calcium. It was not affected by cadmium (Cd2+, 0.03-3 mmol/1), but reduced by 40% in the presence of 1 mmol/1 gadolinium (Gd3). Electrical stimulation with pulses of 15 Hz (3 times for 1 min with intervals of 1 min) evoked a 45calcium release of 14.4% of the tissue radioactivity. The evoked release of 45calcium was reduced by 80% in …
Correction of the unfavourable effects of vasopressin by nitroglycerin infusion
1982
Nitroglycerin was administered with vasopressin to prevent adverse effects. Vasopressin 0.25U . 70 kg-1 min-1 was infused intravenously in four dogs for 40 minutes, when a venous infusion of nitroglycerin 1.2 micrograms . kg-1 . min-1 was added for 20 minutes. Nitroglycerin 1.2 micrograms . kg-1 . min-1 alone was infused intravenously in another four dogs for 40 minutes. The venous blood pressures (mesenteric and central) and arterial pressures (mesenteric and femoral), the electrocardiogram and arterio-venous difference were recorded. Nitroglycerin was shown to annul the unfavourable effects of vasopressin without altering its efficacy upon portal pressure.
Adequate vitamin B12 and folate status of Norwegian vegans and vegetarians
2022
AbstractPlant-based diets may increase the risk of vitamin B12 deficiency due to limited intake of animal-source foods, while dietary folate increases when adhering to plant-based diets. In this cross-sectional study, we evaluated the B12 and folate status of Norwegian vegans and vegetarians using dietary B12 intake, B12 and folic acid supplement use, and biomarkers (serum B12 (B12), plasma total homocysteine (tHcy), plasma methylmalonic acid (MMA) and serum folate). Vegans (n 115) and vegetarians (n 90) completed a 24-h dietary recall and a FFQ and provided a non-fasting blood sample. cB12, a combined indicator for evaluation of B12 status, was calculated. B12 status was adequate in both v…
Dietary Habits and Self-Reported Health Measures Among Norwegian Adults Adhering to Plant-Based Diets
2022
BackgroundAs plant-based diets is increasing, we aimed to investigate dietary habits, dietary motivation and self-reported health of Norwegian adults who adhere to different types of plant-based diets.MethodsIn 2020, 808 subjects (530 women and 278 men) participated in an online survey, including vegans (8%), lacto-ovo vegetarians (16%), pescatarians (23%), and flexitarians (53%).ResultsHalf of the participants reported to consume fruits daily, three quarters consumed vegetables daily, and one quarter consumed whole grain products daily. Half of the participants reported weekly consumption of sweets and salted snacks, and 10% reported daily consumption of sugary drinks. Daily consumption of…
FIA-fluorimetric determination of thiamine.
1990
A flow injection-fluorimetric determination of thiamine is reported. The procedure is based on the oxidation of the analyte with potassium hexacyanoferrate(III) immobilized on an anionic exchange resin; the fluorescence is monitored in aqueous basic solution. Concentrations of the vitamin of 0.1-4 ppm have been determined; the relative standard deviation was 1.8%. The injection rate was 28 samples/h. The influence of other substances and the determination of the drug in a pharmaceutical formulation are also reported.
Digitalisation of municipal healthcare collaboration with volunteers: a case study applying normalization process theory
2021
Abstract Background Increasing use of volunteers in healthcare requires structured collaboration between healthcare services and volunteers. The aim of this research was to explore critical issues and strategies in the implementation process of a digital solution for collaboration with and coordination of volunteers in municipal healthcare services. Methods Qualitative data collection was used to study implementation of a digital system for collaboration with volunteers in three Norwegian municipalities. Three rounds of interviews were conducted with healthcare employees from a volunteer centre and from municipality healthcare units in three municipalities: before implementation, and 6 and …
Birth weight, cardiometabolic risk factors and effect modification of physical activity in children and adolescents: pooled data from 12 internationa…
2020
Abstract Objectives Low and high birth weight is associated with higher levels of cardiometabolic risk factors and adiposity in children and adolescents, and increases the risk of cardiovascular diseases, obesity, and early mortality later in life. Moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA) is associated with lower cardiometabolic risk factors and may mitigate the detrimental consequences of high or low birth weight. Thus, we examined whether MVPA modified the associations between birth weight and cardiometabolic risk factors in children and adolescents. Methods We used pooled individual data from 12 cohort- or cross-sectional studies including 9,100 children and adolescents. Birth weigh…
Change and stability: Within-person life satisfaction over a 20-year period using data from the HUNT survey
2020
Background: The aim of the present study was to investigate within-person life satisfaction (LS) dynamics for two age groups, 20–29 and 30–39 years, from 1984 to 1986 and to follow them over a 20-year period. Methods: Data from 1984 to 2008 were extracted from the large, prospective, longitudinal North-Trøndelag Health Study (HUNT), Norway. This paper includes data from more than 14,500 persons. Data were analysed using logistic regression, and LS dynamics were modelled using gender, time and self-rated health. Results: The analyses revealed that about 20% of people in these age groups had a stable level in LS, also known as set point. Long-term LS change, defined as ⩾2 SDs, was reported f…
