Biocultural conflicts: understanding complex interconnections between a traditional ceremony and threatened carnivores in north Kenya
2022
Abstract Biological and cultural diversity are inextricably linked and rapidly eroding worldwide. As a response, many conservation efforts foster synergies between cultural and biological diversity agendas through biocultural approaches. However, such approaches do not always address biocultural conflicts, where certain cultural practices can lead to biodiversity loss and, in turn, threaten the continuance of such practices. In this study, we examined a biocultural conflict in the Dimi ceremony, the most important rite of passage of the Daasanach agro-pastoralists of north Kenya, in which skins from threatened carnivore species are used extensively as traditional ornaments. We quantified th…
Ground-dwelling true bugs (Heteroptera) in afforested fields
2017
Former agricultural lands may host peculiar biota, because agriculture activities have changed the physical, chemical and biological features of the soil; however, biodiversity in afforested fields is poorly known. The aim of this study was to investigate the diversity of ground-dwelling true bugs (Heteroptera) in early successional afforested fields in central Finland. We used a large-scale field experiment, in which agricultural land had been afforested 25 years ago by planting monocultures of birch, pine and spruce trees. Pitfall traps caught a total of 224 heteropteran individuals representing 20 species. The community was numerically dominated by Lygaeidae, Drymus brunneus being the mo…
Dead wood and fungi : detection, diversity and conservation in boreal forests
2018
Dead wood and associated fungal communities are a crucial part of boreal forest ecosystems, and severely affected and threatened by human actions like commercial timber harvesting. Despite their importance for forest functioning, most wood-inhabiting fungal species, especially those producing small fruit bodies, are still ecologically and taxonomically poorly known. In addition, studies on dead wood profiles have neglected fine woody debris. This thesis includes detailed investigations of fruiting phenology of different morphological groups and complete dead wood profile of one semi-natural boreal forest. In addition, the diversity patterns of wood-inhabiting fungal communities according fo…
Multitaxa species richness of a wood-pasture complex in the Finnish SW-archipelago
2019
Traditional rural biotopes such as semi-natural grasslands and wood-pastures are among the most threatened biotopes in Finland. Archipelago Sea area hosts an especially representative collection of these biotopes, considering both their combined area and average quality. We surveyed birds, vascular plants, bryophytes, polypores and ground-inhabiting stipitate macrofungi in one wood-pasture complex in Korppoo, Archipelago Sea area. Here we report and discuss the results of these surveys. We detected altogether 457 species, including 8 red-listed bird species and 6 red-listed vascular plant species. We didn´t detect any red-listed bryophytes or fungi, but also these groups included several ra…
An Ecological Dynamics Approach to Understanding Human-Environment Interactions in the Adventure Sport Context – Implications for Research and …
2022
The last few decades have witnessed a surge of interest in adventure sports, and an emerging research focus on these activities. However, recent conceptual analyses and scientific reviews have highlighted a major, fundamental question that remains unresolved: what constitutes an adventure sport (and are they ‘sports’ at all)? Despite several proposals for definitions, the field still seems to lack a shared conceptualization. This deficit may be a serious limitation for research and practice, restricting the development of a more nuanced theoretical explanation of participation and prac-tical implications within and across adventure sports. In this article we address anot…
Recognition of earthquake-induced damage in the Abakainon necropolis (NE Sicily): results from geo-morphological, geophysical and numerical analyses
2017
Seismotectonic activity and slope instability are a permanent threat in the archaeological site of Abakainon and in the nearby village of Tripi in NE Sicily. In recent times, signs of an ancient earthquake have been identified in the necropolis of Abakainon which dating was ascertained to the first century AD earthquake. The site is located on a slope of Peloritani Mts. along the Tindari Fault Line and contains evidence for earthquake-induced landslide, including fallen columns and blocks, horizontal shift and counter slope tilting of the tomb basements. In this paper, we used an integrated geomorphological and geophysical analysis to constrain the landslide. The research was directed to th…
A land of mystical beauty, living wonder and unrivalled adventure : representation of New Zealand through adventure tourism websites
2009
Seikkailumatkailulla on merkittävä rooli matkailussa, esimerkiksi benji-hypystä on tullut yksi maan matkailuikoneista.
Tutkimusaineistoksi poimittiin satunnaisotannalla 17 lastensuojelun avohuollon asiakkaan asiakirjat vuosilta 2013–2014. Sosiaalityön profession itseymmärryksessä ja uudessa sosiaalihuoltolaissa (1301/2014) rakenteelliselle sosiaalityölle on kiistaton vaade. Aiemmassa rakenteellisen sosiaalityön tutkimuksessa on kuitenkin todettu, että rakenteellinen sosiaalityö on käsitteenä ja käytännön työmenetelminä jä…
TOWARDS AN ADVANCED CONSERVATION STRATEGY: A STRUCTURED DATABASE for SHARING 3D DOCUMENTATION between EXPERT USERS
2019
Abstract. Nowadays, the researchers in Cultural Heritage fields investigate more and more about advanced conservation strategies that comprehend the possibility to share and use 3D models and structured information related to them. One of the modern method adopted to achieve this goal is to use structured web-platform. These are online systems that can handle data, created to contain and support precise information. They simultaneously respond to the need for a common ground for different expert users and of a unique tool where to store several kinds of data, coming from heterogeneous sources. The article aims to show how it is possible to build a valid tool for the conservation and monitor…
The transcriptome analysis of Strongyloides stercoralis L3i larvae reveals targets for intervention in a neglected disease.
2012
Background: Strongyloidiasis is one of the most neglected diseases distributed worldwide with endemic areas in developed countries, where chronic infections are life threatening. Despite its impact, very little is known about the molecular biology of the parasite involved and its interplay with its hosts. Next generation sequencing technologies now provide unique opportunities to rapidly address these questions. Principal Findings: Here we present the first transcriptome of the third larval stage of S. stercoralis using 454 sequencing coupled with semi-automated bioinformatic analyses. 253,266 raw sequence reads were assembled into 11,250 contiguous sequences, most of which were novel. 8037…
