Purpose of review In this review, we summarize the latest findings on small, dense LDL (sdLDL) atherogenic particles, including their associations with other biomarkers. Recent findings Increased sdLDL levels have been reported not only in different metabolic disorders such as diabetes, obesity and metabolic syndrome, but also in patients with rheumatoid and psoriatic arthritis as well as hypothyroidism. A wide range of lipid-lowering, as well as other drug classes, including novel antidiabetic agents and nutraceuticals, exert favourable effects on these atherogenic particles. Transfer to Polymer and Long-Chain Branching in PLP-SEC of Acrylates

Pulsed laser polymerization (PLP) combined with size exclusion chromatography (SEC) is the method of choice for determining propagation rate coefficients. The influence of the long-chain branching in PLP-SEC is investigated using multiple-detection SEC and a recently developed method to detect long-chain branching [P. Castignolles, R. Grab, M. Parkinson, M. Wilhelm, M. Gaborieau, Polymer 2009, 50, 2373.] While little or no long-chain branching is detected in poly(n-butyl acrylate), the error in relevant molecular weights of poly(2-ethylhexyl acrylate) is large (30-100%) due to long-chain branching. Abstract Aqueous size-exclusion chromatography was used to analyse the elution behaviour of several standard ionic polymers, including poly( l -glutamic acid), sodium poly(styrene sulphonate) and poly(acrylic acid), different in nature and chain flexibility, as a function of the pH and ionic strength of the eluent. Water-soluble, cyclodextrin-functionalized semiconductor nanocrystals: Preparation and pH-dependent aggregation and emission properties

Abstract Using peramino-functionalized β-cyclodextrin molecules for phase.transfer of hydrophobic CdSe multishell nanocrystals into water, we obtained hydrophilic nanoparticles with high quantum yield (up to 50%). At pH > 9, the aqueous solution of these nanocrystals remained stable for several months. On the origin of functionalization in one-pot radiation synthesis of nanogels from aqueous polymer solutions

Radiation-engineered poly(N-vinyl pyrrolidone) nanogels are very interesting biocompatible nanocarriers for i.v. administration of therapeutics and contrast agents for bioimaging. The manufacturing process is fast and effective, it grants excellent control of particle size and simultaneous sterilization of the formed nanogels. Interestingly, primary amino groups and carboxyl groups, useful for (bio)conjugation, are also formed in a dose-dependent fashion. Radioactive labeling of defined HPMA-based polymeric structures using [18F]FETos for in vivo imaging by positron emission tomography.

During the last decades polymer-based nanomedicine has turned out to be a promising tool in modern pharmaceutics. The following article describes the synthesis of well-defined random and block copolymers by RAFT polymerization with potential medical application. The polymers have been labeled with the positron-emitting nuclide fluorine-18. The polymeric structures are based on the biocompatible N-(2-hydroxypropyl)-methacrylamide (HPMA).
