Influence of Hair Density and Hair Length on Interparticle Interactions of Spherical Polymer Brushes in a Homopolymer Matrix

The dynamics of hairy spherical nanoparticles in a melt of linear polymer chains has been investigated by mechanical spectroscopy as a function of particle topology and concentration. Using a simple free volume approach for the data analysis of the structural relaxation time vs concentration and the well-known hard-sphere result as a reference, a semiquantitative measure for the interparticle interactions, that is particle deformability/softness, and the effective particle size compared to the size of a nonswollen spherical brush has been determined. Abstract Thermal and thermo-oxidative degradation of polyamide 11 (PA11) in the melt state (T = 215 °C) are studied by resorting to time-resolved mechanical spectroscopy. Such an approach allows to elude the changes in the rheological properties occurring while testing, thus enabling the rigorous study of polymer degradation in the melt state. Different concurrent degradation reactions in oxidative (air) and non-oxidative (N2) environment are promptly guessed by studying the time evolutions of rheological functions. Optical video microscopy and digital image processing have been used to study the self-diffusion of colloidal particles with a hard-sphere potential. The colloid particles consist of cross-linked polymers and are dispersed in a good solvent to avoid aggregation. The fractal calibration method applied to the characterization of polymers in solvent mixtures and in mixed gel packings by SEC.

The size-exclusion chromatographic (SEC) behaviour of different solvent/polymer systems in three packing sets has been analysed from fractal considerations. The three-column sets studied are specifically formed by: (i) 'pure' micro-styragel, (ii) 'mixed' TSK Gel H(HR + XL + HR) and (iii) mixed TSK Gel H(XL + HR + XL). The experimental data reveals that in most of the systems assayed the classical universal calibration (UC) is not fulfilled, denoting the existence of secondary effects accompanying the main SEC mechanism. A family of graft copolymers derivatives obtained from α,β-poly(N-2-hydroxyethyl)-dl-aspartamide (PHEA) have been studied as potential self-assembling macromolecules forming stable polymeric micelles at low critical micellar concentration. These polymers are obtained grafting on PHEA poly(ethylene glycol) (PEG) (Mw 5000 g/mol) (PHEA–PEG), hexadecylamine (PHEA–C16) or both moieties (PHEA–PEG–C16). Abstract α , β -Poly(asparthylhydrazide) (PAHy) is a new synthetic polymer that exhibits interesting properties and is a candidate for biomedical applications. In this article the characterization of PAHy polymer by multi-angle laser light scattering (MALS) and single-capillary viscometer (SCV) detectors on-line to a size exclusion chromatography (SEC) system is reported. The SEC–MALS–SCV system furnishes exhaustive and consistent characterization of the PAHy polymer. Small hydrocarbon cyclophanes: Synthesis, X-ray analysis and molecular modelling

Small hydrocarbon cyclophanes, such as [2.2.0]m,m,m-cyclophane (20) and [2.2.0]p,m,m-cyclophane (21), are strained analogues of the well-known π-prismand [2.2.2]p,p,p-cyclophane (1). The synthetic route to these molecules is based on well-established cyclophane methodology which offers a general access to a whole family of hydrocarbon cyclophanes. Single crystal X-ray analysis and molecular modelling showed that the reduction of the ring size from 18-membered (1) to 14-membered (21) or 13-membered (20) has a substantial effect on the size and the shape of the cyclophane’s cavity, thus blocking its ability to complex Ag+ ions. Optically active amphiphilic hyperbranched polyglycerols as templates for palladium nanoparticles

Abstract We report a systematic study on the encapsulation of palladium nanoparticles in optically active amphiphilic hyperbranched polyglycerols with different optical signs and different degrees of polymerization, namely (−)-P(G 40 C16 0.5 ) 1 and (+)-P(G 73 C16 0.5 ) 2 . Studies on the Mechanism of Inhibition by Phosphinothricin of Glutamine Synthetase Isolated from Triticum aestivum L.

Summary The activity of glutamine synthetase (EC 6.3.1.2) isolated from roots and leaves of wheat is strongly inhibited by phosphinothricin. As revealed by gel filtration and kinetic studies the mechanism of inhibition appears to be irreversible. The results indicate that the rate limiting step of the reaction of the inhibitor with the chloroplast glutamine synthetase is not the initial, but the following reaction. However, of root glutamine synthetase the irreversible inhibition follows a second order reaction depending on the concentration of the enzyme and of phosphinothricin and the rate limiting step is the formation of the initial enzyme-inhibitor complex.
