The formation of human capital is important for a society's welfare and economic success. Recent literature shows that child health can provide an important explanation for disparities in children’s human capital development across different socio-economic groups. While this literature focuses on cognitive skills as determinants of human capital, it neglects non-cognitive skills. We analyze data from economic experiments with preschoolers and their mothers to investigate whether child health can explain developmental gaps in children’s non-cognitive skills. Motor development of infants with univentricular heart at the ages of 16 and 52 weeks

Purpose To compare the motor development of patients with hypoplastic left heart syndrome (HLHS) and other types of univentricular heart (UVH) with peers who are healthy at the ages of 16 and 52 weeks. Methods Motor development was assessed with the Alberta Infant Motor Scale (AIMS). Results Both the 23 patients with HLHS and the 13 patients with UVH had lower total AIMS scores in both observations than the controls. At the age of 52 weeks, patients with HLHS had significantly lower scores in all 4 AIMS subscales, whereas patients with UVH had lower scores only in the prone and standing subscales. Models for the development of generic skills in Finnish higher education

This article examines how Finnish universities and other higher education institutes have responded to the challenges posed by rapid changes in the world of work and societies all over Europe, particularly with reference to the development of generic skills. The data were collected by means of individual and group interviews at three Finnish higher education institutes, including two universities and one university of applied sciences.
