A semiparametric approach to estimate reference curves for biophysical properties of the skin

2006

Reference curves which take one covariable into account such as the age, are often required in medicine, but simple systematic and efficient statistical methods for constructing them are lacking. Classical methods are based on parametric fitting (polynomial curves). In this chapter, we describe a new methodology for the estimation of reference curves for data sets, based on nonparametric estimation of conditional quantiles. The derived method should be applicable to all clinical or more generally biological variables that are measured on a continuous quantitative scale. To avoid the curse of dimensionality when the covariate is multidimensional, a new semiparametric approach is proposed. Th…

Mentālu slimību stigmatizācija un stigma attiecībā pret šizofrēnijas un depresijas pacientiem

2021

Ir skaidrs, ka aizspriedumiem var būt postošas sekas (Shrivastava A., Johnston M & Bureau Y., 2012). Stigmatizācijai var būt kaitīgas sekas gan objektīvai, gan subjektīvai dzīves kvalitātei. Savu problēm…

Metformīna ietekme uz neiroģenēzi sporādiskas Alcheimera slimības žurku modelī

2021

Alcheimera slimība (AD) ir visbiežākais demences izraisītājs pasaulē, taču joprojām nav pieejama efektīva terapija, kas šo slimību ārstētu (Graham et al., 2017). Balstoties uz cukura diabēta un sporādiskas AD patoloģisko mehānismu līdzībām, AD sauc par 3. tipa diabētu (Steen et al., 2005), tāpēc pretdiabēta vielām saskatāms potenciāls AD apturēšanā. Šajā darbā pārbaudījām pretdiabēta medikamenta metformīna ietekmi uz neironu dzīvotspēju un neiroģenēzi veselu un streptozocīna inducētas sporādiskas AD tipa modeļa žurku smadzenēs. Iegūtie dati liecina, ka metformīns (75 mg/kg un 100 mg/kg) uzlabo neironu dzīvotspēju un saglabā neiroģenēzes procesus sporādiska AD tipa modeļa žurku smadzeņu garo…

Stress induced grain boundary migration in very soluble brittle salt

1999

Abstract Grain boundary migration (GBM) was studied in-situ at room temperature, atmospheric pressure and an applied diffmfwerential stress of ∼9.5 MPa under the optical microscope, in a wet aggregate of an elastic-brittle salt (sodium chlorate). The aggregate was previously deformed predominantly by a combination of grain boundary sliding, pressure solution and cataclastic solution creep. After deformation, but when the sample was still under differential stress, undeformed, fracture-free grains were observed to grow at the cost of deformed, intensely fractured grains. GMB rates typically fell in the range 2--10 μm/day. GBM took place only as long as the sample was under stress. Boundaries…

Management of urinary incontinence in postmenopausal women: An EMAS clinical guide.

2020

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of urinary incontinence and of other lower urinary tract symptoms increases after the menopause and affects between 38 % and 55 % of women aged over 60 years. While urinary incontinence has a profound impact on quality of life, few affected women seek care. AIM: The aim of this clinical guide is to provide an evidence-based approach to the management of urinary incontinence in postmenopausal women. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Literature review and consensus of expert opinion. SUMMARY RECOMMENDATIONS: Healthcare professionals should consider urinary incontinence a clinical priority and develop appropriate diagnostic skills. They should be able to identify and manage a…

Physically based modeling of rainfall-triggered landslides: a case study in the Luquillo forest, Puerto Rico

2013

This paper presents the development of a rainfall-triggered landslide module within an existing physically based spatially distributed ecohydrologic model. The model, tRIBS-VEGGIE (Triangulated Irregular Networks-based Real-time Integrated Basin Simulator and Vegetation Generator for Interactive Evolution), is capable of a sophisticated description of many hydrological processes; in particular, the soil moisture dynamics are resolved at a temporal and spatial resolution required to examine the triggering mechanisms of rainfall-induced landslides. The validity of the tRIBS-VEGGIE model to a tropical environment is shown with an evaluation of its performance against direct observations made w…

Firefly algorithm based upon slicing structure encoding for unequal facility layout problem

2019

Finding the locations of departments or machines in a workspace is classified as a Facility Layout Problem. Good placement of departments has a relevant influence on manufacturing costs, work in process, lead times and production efficiency. This paper analyses the problem of allocating departments with restrictions in terms of unequal area and rectangular shape within a facility, in order to minimize the sum of material handling costs taking into account the satisfaction of the aspect ratio requested. In particular, we propose for the first time a Firefly Algorithm based on the slicing structure encoding. The proposed method was tested comparing the results obtained from other authors on t…

A multi objective genetic algorithm for the facility layout problem based upon slicing structure encoding

2012

This paper proposes a new multi objective genetic algorithm (MOGA) for solving unequal area facility layout problems (UA-FLPs). The genetic algorithm suggested is based upon the slicing structure where the relative locations of the facilities on the floor are represented by a location matrix encoded in two chromosomes. A block layout is constructed by partitioning the floor into a set of rectangular blocks using guillotine cuts satisfying the areas requirements of the departments. The procedure takes into account four objective functions (material handling costs, aspect ratio, closeness and distance requests) by means of a Pareto based evolutionary approach. The main advantage of the propos…

Safety of sublingual immunotherapy started during the pollen season

2009

Sublingual immunotherapy (SLIT) is safer than subcutaneous immunotherapy (SCIT) and this has lead to the reconsideration of the use of ultra-rush schedules for SLIT. The aim of this study was to assess the safety of ultra-rush SLIT in pollen-allergic children according to different timing of administration in relation to the pollen season. In total, 34 children with pollen-induced rhinitis and 36 with pollen-induced asthma and rhinitis, were enrolled and assigned to three study groups: group 1 (n = 17 patients): conventional pre-seasonal-SLIT treatment; group 2 (n = 23 patients), seasonal SLIT ended before the pollen seasonal peak; group 3 (n = 30 patients), SLIT began after the pollen seaso…

Subdifferential and conjugate calculus of integral functions with and without qualification conditions

2023

We characterize the subdifferential and the Fenchel conjugate of convex integral functions by means of respectively the approximate subdifferential and the conjugate of the associated convex normal integrands. The results are stated in Suslin locally convex spaces, and do not require continuity-type qualification conditions on the functions, nor special topological or algebraic structures on the index set. Consequently, when confined to separable Banach spaces, the characterizations of such a subdifferential are obtained using only the exact subdifferential of the given integrand but at nearby points. We also provide some simplifications of our formulas when additional continuity conditions…
