Revealing lattice disorder, oxygen incorporation and pore formation in laser induced two-photon oxidized graphene
2019
Abstract Laser induced two-photon oxidation has proven to be a reliable method to pattern and control the level of oxidation of single layer graphene, which in turn allows the development of graphene-based electronic and optoelectronic devices with an all-optical method. Here we provide a full structural and chemical description of modifications of air-suspended graphene during the oxidation process. By using different laser irradiation doses, we were able to show via transmission electron microscopy, electron energy loss spectroscopy, electron diffraction and Raman spectroscopy how graphene develops from its pristine form up to a completely oxidized, porous and amorphous carbon layer. Furt…
Hemophilia A and Hemophilia B
2019
Abstract While observed for centuries, the diseases that we call hemophilia have been clarified and elucidated in the past 50 to 60 years. We now know the genetics and transmission of the various types of hemophilia and are greatly facilitated by their laboratory features. Various hemorrhagic manifestations of the various hemophilias include hemarthrosis, intramuscular hemorrhage, retroperitoneal bleeding, retropharyngeal bleeding, and central nervous system hemorrhage. In the past, trauma and surgery were associated with serious or fatal bleeding. Now, multiple agents are available to treat or prophylax against hemorrhage. Specific diagnoses require specific therapeutics. Fatal hemorrhagic…
2018
The paper aims to present through case studies the history of the titles of some writings belonging to the Hippocratic Corpus with particular regard to their translations into ancient and modern languages. This investigation is of some relevance in order to understand the historical conditions under which Hippocratic treatises were transmitted. In this connection, a relation can be shown between the translated titles of the writings considered on the one side (among them in the first instance de genitura/de natura pueri and de aeribus) and on the other side the ways in which their contents have been transmitted through scientific language in the various historical contexts.
Metallic nanoparticles exhibit paradoxical effects on oxidative stress and pro-inflammatory response in endothelial cells in vitro
2007
Particulate matter is associated with different human diseases affecting organs such as the respiratory and cardiovascular systems. Very small particles (nanoparticles) have been shown to be rapidly internalized into the body. Since the sites of internalization and the location of the detected particles are often far apart, a distribution via the blood stream must have occurred. Thus, endothelial cells, which line the inner surface of blood vessels, must have had direct contact with the particles. In this study we tested the effects of metallic nanoparticles (Co and Ni) on oxidative stress and proinflammatory response in human endothelial cells in vitro. Exposure to both nanoparticle types…
Restoration and Enhancement of Historical Stereo Photos
2021
Restoration of digital visual media acquired from repositories of historical photographic and cinematographic material is of key importance for the preservation, study and transmission of the legacy of past cultures to the coming generations. In this paper, a fully automatic approach to the digital restoration of historical stereo photographs is proposed, referred to as Stacked Median Restoration plus (SMR+). The approach exploits the content redundancy in stereo pairs for detecting and fixing scratches, dust, dirt spots and many other defects in the original images, as well as improving contrast and illumination. This is done by estimating the optical flow between the images, and using it …
Ni@Fe2O3 heterodimers: controlled synthesis and magnetically recyclable catalytic application for dehalogenation reactions
2012
Ni@Fe2O3 heterodimer nanoparticles (NPs) were synthesized by thermal decomposition of organometallic reactants. After functionalization, these Ni@Fe2O3 heterodimers became water soluble. The pristine heterodimeric NPs were characterized by transmission electron microscopy (TEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), Mossbauer spectroscopy and magnetic susceptibility measurements. A special advantage of the heterodimers lies in the fact that nanodomains of different composition can be used as catalysts for the removal of environmentally hazardous halogenated pollutants.
Complexation of Uranium by Cells and S-Layer Sheets of Bacillus sphaericus JG-A12
2005
ABSTRACT Bacillus sphaericus JG-A12 is a natural isolate recovered from a uranium mining waste pile near the town of Johanngeorgenstadt in Saxony, Germany. The cells of this strain are enveloped by a highly ordered crystalline proteinaceous surface layer (S-layer) possessing an ability to bind uranium and other heavy metals. Purified and recrystallized S-layer proteins were shown to be phosphorylated by phosphoprotein-specific staining, inductive coupled plasma mass spectrometry analysis, and a colorimetric method. We used extended X-ray absorption fine-structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy to determine the structural parameters of the uranium complexes formed by purified and recrystallized S-laye…
