Fasting enhances the response of arcuate neuropeptide Y-glucose-inhibited neurons to decreased extracellular glucose

2009

0363-6143 (Print) Comparative Study In Vitro Journal Article Research Support, N.I.H., Extramural; Fasting increases neuropeptide Y (NPY) expression, peptide levels, and the excitability of NPY-expressing neurons in the hypothalamic arcuate (ARC) nucleus. A subpopulation of ARC-NPY neurons ( approximately 40%) are glucose-inhibited (GI)-type glucose-sensing neurons. Hence, they depolarize in response to decreased glucose. Because fasting enhances NPY neurotransmission, we propose that during fasting, GI neurons depolarize in response to smaller decreases in glucose. This increased excitation in response to glucose decreases would increase NPY-GI neuronal excitability and enhance NPY neurotr…

LA LIBERALIZZAZIONE DEL LICENZIAMENTO ECONOMICO: POLITICA COSTITUZIONALE, LEGGE, GIURISPRUDENZA

2023

The essay analyses individual dismissals for economic grounds and related remedies (art. 18 Workers' Statute after "Fornerno" reform and legislative decree no. 23/2015), and it highlights the neoliberal reading made by labour courts.

Host-manipulation by parasites with complex life cycles: adaptive or not?

2010

7 pages; International audience; The effect of host manipulation by parasites on trophic transmission to final hosts remains unclear. The transmission benefits gained by manipulative parasites are difficult to assess, and evidence for a causal link between manipulation and trophic transmission is missing. In addition, infected intermediate hosts can also be more vulnerable to predation by nonhosts, whereas recent theoretical advances indicate that the evolution of host manipulation does not require increased specificity in trophic transmission. We propose that a deeper consideration of the evolution of complex life cycles in helminth parasites might provide a different perspective on the ev…

Modelling of light transmittance and reflectance in flat fluidized photoreactors

1992

In recent years several photon induced chemical reactions involving the use of a solid catalyst have been studied. Flat fluidized beds have proved to be promising devices for carrying out these photocatalytic reactions. There is therefore a need for the modelling of light interactions within such kinds of photoreactors. In this paper, a phenomenological model is proposed for simulating the light transmission and reflection in flat fluidized gas-solid photoreactors. A detailed description of the model is presented. The model predictions were compared with experimental data and a satisfactory agreement was found. Correlations were also suggested for the estimation of model parameters. Depuis …

The measurement of light transmission through an irradiated fluidised bed

1983

Abstract The transmission of light through an irradiated fluidised bed with vertical flat walls containing catalytic particles has been experimentally studied. The amount of light transmitted through the reactor was measured at different levels by a photocell. The experimental variables studied included: (i) gas flow rate, varying from 2 to more than 10 times that required for minimum fluidisation; (ii) mean particle size, ranging from 0.138 to 0.275 mm; and (iii) internal bed thickness from 2.1 to 4.9 mm. The effect of the reflectance of the particles was also examined. Results show that the amount of light transmitted through a flat fluidised bed is low. The average transmitted light has …

New circuital models of grounding systems and PDS for EMI analysis during a lightning strike

2005

In this paper circuital models of a Power Drive System (PDS) and of grounding systems are proposed in order to analyse Electromagnetic Interferences (EMI) induced in a PDS when a lightning current flows in the grounding system. The models have been developed adopting the network approach with lumped parameters and have been implemented using the software MATLAB. A High Frequency (HF) model suitable to simulate the impulse response of a PDS is described and a generalized method in order to calculate the lumped parameters values of grounding system models is presented. The new method takes into account the burial depth of electrodes as regards their length. The validation results of this new …

Some notes to the language of two late byzantine poems

2019

A Multi-Phase Decode-and-Forward Transmission Protocol in Cognitive Relay Networks: Outage Analysis and Relay Power Allocation

2015

Consider an underlay cognitive relay network with multiple source and destination pairs and that a decode-and-forward scheme is adopted at the relay. We propose a multi-phase transmission protocol in this paper which involves cooperation among source, relay and destination nodes. Given perfect interference elimination before decoding at the destination nodes, we derive closed-form expressions for outage probability calculation over Rayleigh fading channels. Furthermore, the optimal relay power allocation factor which leads to minimal outage probability is determined. Numerical results reveal the conditions under which satisfactory performance can be achieved based on the proposed scheme.

Is TCP Packet Reordering Always Harmful?

2004

IP networks do not provide any guarantee that packets belonging to the same flow are delivered in the correct order. Out-of-order reception of packets was commonly considered due to pathological network conditions (such as link failures, etc.). However, it has been shown that packet reordering is a phenomenon which occurs even in normal network operation, due to a number of link-level and/or router-level implementation features, such as local parallelism and load balancing. Packet reordering is intuitively considered as a negative phenomenon, which may severely affect TCP traffic performance since it is expected to cause inefficient usage of the available link bandwidth and is expected to i…

Polysialic acid can mediate membrane interactions by interacting with phospholipids

2009

Polysialic acid (polySia) is expressed on the surface of neural cells, neuroinvasive bacterial cells and several tumor cells. PolySia chains attached to NCAM can influence both trans interactions between membranes of two cells and cis interactions. Here, we report on the involvement of phospholipids in regulation of membrane interactions by polySia. The pH at the surface of liposomes, specific molecular area of phosphatidylcholine molecules, phase transition of DPPC bilayers, cyclic voltammograms of BLMs, and electron micrographs of phosphatidylcholine vesicles were studied after addition of polysialic acid free in solution. The results indicate that polySia chains can associate with phosph…
