Improvement of wound healing after hemorrhoidectomy: a double-blind, randomized study of botulinum toxin injection.

PURPOSE: Hemorrhoidectomy is usually associated with significant pain during the postoperative period. The spasm of the internal sphincter seems to play in important role in the origin of pain. This study was designed to evaluate the effectiveness of intrasphincter injection of botulinum toxin after hemaorrhoidectomy in reducing the maximum testing pressure of the anal canal, accelerating wound healing, and decreasing postoperative pain when resting and during defecation. Effect of irrigation of the nose with isotonic salt solution on adult patients with chronic paranasal sinus disease

In a prospective, randomized, controlled, double-blind trial we compared the effectiveness of endonasal irrigations with Ems salt solution to that with sodium chloride solution in the treatment of adult patients with chronic paranasal sinus disease. Subjects (n = 40) were randomly allocated to treatment either with isotonic Ems salt solution or with isotonic sodium chloride solution. The treatment consisted of endonasal irrigation twice daily and additional nasal spray as required. Autonomic regulation of nasal vessels during changes in body position

The effects of postural changes on nasal airflow and nasal capillary blood flow were investigated in 15 healthy volunteers. Measurements were performed following nasal application of saline solution (control), the alpha-1 receptor antagonist prazosin, the alpha-2 receptor antagonist yohimbine, and after application of both prazosin and yohimbine. Nasal airflow in the control experiments did not significantly differ in the upright (362 +/- 166 ml/s), dorsally recumbent (350 +/- 167 ml/s) and 70 degrees head down position (311 +/- 167 ml/s). Relationship between Thyroid Status during the First Trimester of Pregnancy and Neonatal Well-Being

Iodine is an essential micronutrient for the synthesis of thyroid hormones. The proper functioning of the thyroid axis is essential for the normal development of the nervous system, especially in the first trimester of gestation. The aim of the present study was to analyze the perinatal outcomes, anthropometry, and APGAR test scores of newborns and to relate them to maternal thyroid status. Abstract Two different mouse strains have been used for determination of age dependence of DNA-protein crosslinks by alkaline filter elution: a long lived laboratory strain, NMRI and an accelerated senescence-prone, short lived strain, SAMP1. Five organs were selected: Brain, kidney, lung, heart and liver. Remarkably in all five organs of short lived SAMP1 mice crosslinks increased significantly with age. In NMRI however only in brain and heart a significant rise in old age has been observed, while in the other organs there was no increase in DNA-protein crosslinking. Could halophilic archaea improve the traditional salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicholus L) safety and quality?

Aims: The positive influence of two selected extremely halophilic archaea strains in the production of salted anchovies (Engraulis encrasicolus, L., 1758) was highlighted. Methods and Results: Anchovies produced with salt artificially contaminated with halophiles exhibited lower loads of staphylococci, Enterobacteriaceae and lactic acid bacteria, and a reduced content of histamine as well as an improved organoleptic acceptance.
