This work presents the results of an assessment of the existence and concentration of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in groundwaters from 14 hydrological basins in Sicily (25,710 km2). On the basis of hydrological, hydrogeochemical and geological studies, 324 sampling points were selected. All groundwater sampled were collected twice, from October to December 2004 and from February to May 2005, and were analysed to determine the concentration and spatial distribution of the VOCs in the aquifers. The aroma compounds present in the headspace of homogenized slurries of fresh prickly pears (Opuntia ficus-indica) from Sicilian cultivars were determined. Solid Phase Microextraction (SPME) followed by Gas-chromatography/Mass Spectrometry (GC/MS) analysis was used to characterize the volatile compounds. The volatile flavour profiles of the three cultivars investigated (red, white and yellow) showed significant differences. The aromatic profile of peeled prickly pears stored for one day was different from the one of the fresh samples, mainly due to the occurrence of some oxidative and hydrolytic reactions

International audience; Amitermes evuncifer (Termitidae, Termitinae) is a pest termite in several countries of Africa, damaging crops and buildings. The trail-following pheromone of this termite was isolated from worker sternal glands and identified by GC-MS after solid phase microextraction (SPME). The pheromone is composed of (3Z,67,8E)-dodeca-3,6,8-trien-1-ol (dodecatrienol) and neocembrene acting in synergy, neocembrene being 5-10 times more abundant than dodecatrienol. Dodecatrienol alone is able to elicit trail-following in workers, whereas neocembrene alone is inactive.
