At a time when increasing numbers of lesbians and gays consider parenthood using reproductive assistance in infertility centers, the present review aims to summarize the results obtained so far by lesbians after intrauterine insemination (IUI) and in-vitro fertilization (IVF) using donor spermatozoa (D-IUI and D-IVF, respectively) and gays entering into gestational-surrogacy programs. Data show that gays display normal semen parameters and lesbians exhibit no specific causes of female infertility except perhaps for polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) and some PCOS-related factors. Ovulation induction and epigenetic anomalies

In this systematic review of ovulation induction and epigenetic control, studies mainly done in the mouse model highlight how hormone treatments may be prejudicial to the epigenetic reprogramming of gametes as well as early embryos. Moreover, the hormone protocols used in assisted reproduction may also modify the physiologic environment of the uterus, a potential link to endometrial epigenetic disturbances. At present, the few available data in humans are insufficient to allow us to independently determine the impact of a woman's age and infertility problems and treatment protocols and hormone doses on such processes as genomic imprinting.

Obesity is a rising health problem in Western societies. It has been related to increased morbidity and mortality rates due to several pathologies. In the field of gynaecology and reproduction, obesity is associated with menstrual disorders, hirsutism, infertility, miscarriage and obstetric complications. It is known to impair human reproduction through different mechanisms such as insulin resistance, hyperandrogenism and elevated leptin levels. Cardiorespiratory information dynamics during mental arithmetic and sustained attention

An analysis of cardiorespiratory dynamics during mental arithmetic, which induces stress, and sustained attention was conducted using information theory. The information storage and internal information of heart rate variability (HRV) were determined respectively as the self-entropy of the tachogram, and the self-entropy of the tachogram conditioned to the knowledge of respiration. The information transfer and cross information from respiration to HRV were assessed as the transfer and cross-entropy, both measures of cardiorespiratory coupling. Compensating for instantaneous signal mixing in transfer entropy analysis of neurobiological time series

The transfer entropy (TE) has recently emerged as a nonlinear model-free tool, framed in information theory, to detect directed interactions in coupled processes. Unfortunately, when applied to neurobiological time series TE is biased by signal cross-talk due to volume conduction. Computational imaging with a balanced detector

Single-pixel cameras allow to obtain images in a wide range of challenging scenarios, including broad regions of the electromagnetic spectrum and through scattering media. However, there still exist several drawbacks that single-pixel architectures must address, such as acquisition speed and imaging in the presence of ambient light. Hydrogenation of Aromatics in Diesel Fuels on Pt/MCM-41 Catalysts

Abstract The hydrogenation activity of Pt supported on two mesoporous MCM-41 samples differing in their chemical composition has been studied by following the kinetics of the hydrogenation of naphthalene at 225–275°C reaction temperature and 5.0 MPa total pressure and by comparing the kinetic parameters obtained with Pt supported on a mesoporous amorphous silica-alumina (MSA) and other conventional supports, such as commercial amorphous silica-alumina (ASA), zeolite USY, γ-alumina, and silica.
