Investigating the feasibility of betanin and pectin extraction from Opuntia ficus-indica peel via microwave-assisted hydrodiffusion and gravity, this study identifies selected important economic and technical aspects associated with this innovative production route starting from prickly pear fruit discards. Which benefits would be derived from this process? Would production be limited to Opuntia-growing countries or, likewise to what happens with dried lemon peel chiefly imported from Argentina, would production take place abroad also? Can distributed manufacturing based on clean extraction technology compete with centralized production using conventional chemical processes?
Kinetics and Mechanism of the Nucleophilic Substitution of Tellurium(II) Dialkanethiolates, Te(SR1)2 with Thiols, HSR2

The equilibrium reaction between tellurium(II) dithiolates and thiols, Te(SR1)2 + 2 HSR2 ⇌ Te(SR2)2 + 2 HSR1 was studied by means of 1H- and 125Te NMR spectroscopy and ab initio quantum chemical methods. It was found that the reaction is catalyzed by Bronsted acids and bases, the catalytic activity corresponding to the strength of the respective acid or base. Investigation of the initial step of the reaction, Te(SR1)2 + HSR2 ⇌ Te(SR1)(SR2) + HSR1, showed it to proceed according to first order kinetics for Te(SR1)2, HSR2 and for the catalyst. The Bronsted aids: The first dehydrogenative arylation of β-keto esters with arenes under ambient aerobic conditions is described. Under a Pd(II)/Bronsted acid co-catalytic system, regioselective arylations with alkoxylated arenes and phenols were achieved in good yields, even in gram-scale conditions.

The accession to the European Union of new member states from central and eastern Europe, with weak trade union movements, poorly developed social dialogue and inferior working conditions, has been viewed as a threat to regulated labour standards in the EU-15. This article examines a high-profile labour dispute arising from the conditions of Latvian construction contract labour in Sweden. The dispute exposes weaknesses in the protective floor of minimum standards offered by the posted workers Directive. It also goes to the core of the debate about the preservation of a ‘European social model’ and the proposed Services Directive.

The EU regulatory regime and employers’ cross-border recruitment practices complicate unions’ ability to represent increasingly diverse and transnationally mobile workers. Even in institutional contexts where the industrial relations structure and labour law are favourable, such as the Netherlands, unions struggle with maintaining labour standards for these workers. This article analyses Dutch union efforts to represent hyper-mobile construction workers at the Eemshaven construction sites. Abstract With this study we aim to look at potential gains and losses in terms of higher career satisfaction and increased strain levels as a consequence of intraorganisational upward career transitions. Following the idea of a matching principle, we further expected stressors to mediate the relationship between transitions and strain, and resources to mediate the relationship between transitions and career satisfaction. Cultural variation of leadership prototypes across 22 European countries

This study sets out to test the assumption that concepts of leadership differ as a function of cultural differences in Europe and to identify dimensions which describe differences in leadership concepts across European countries. Middle‐level managers (N = 6052) from 22 European countries rated 112 questionnaire items containing descriptions of leadership traits and behaviours. For each attribute respondents rated how well it fits their concept of an outstanding business leader. The findings support the assumption that leadership concepts are culturally endorsed.
