Fast algorithm for detection of reference spheres in digital panoramic radiography.

2009

In this paper, an algorithm for detection of reference spheres from digital panoramic radiographic images is presented. The proposed algorithm was tested on a database of 107 digital panoramic radiographic images which were used for dental diagnostics. Results show that the proposed method exhibits for detection of reference spheres, a sensitivity of 97.33% and specificity of 93.85%. Performance time differed between 0.55 and 2.36s depending on image size. The aim of this work was to provide a fast ellipse detection algorithm to reduce measuring time on preoperative implant planning by lowering the computational cost.

Emulating Human Supervision in an Intelligent Tutoring System for Arithmetical Problem Solving

2014

This paper presents an intelligent tutoring system (ITS) for the learning of arithmetical problem solving. This is based on an analysis of a) the cognitive processes that take place during problem solving; and b) the usual tasks performed by a human when supervising a student in a one-to-one tutoring situation. The ITS is able to identify the solving strategy that the student is following and offer adaptive feedback that takes into account both the problem's constraints and the decisions previously made by the user. An observational study shows the ITS's accuracy at emulating expert human supervision, and a randomized experiment reveals that the ITS significantly improves students' learning…

Miejsce międzypokoleniowego uczenia się w procesie hominizacji

2016

This article presents the results of a pilot and exploration study. The main objective of the research was to investigate the differences of intergenerational learning in the process of hominisation. For the purpose of the study the author used the quantitative strategy of research and author’s instrument of measurement. In the study participated 50 adult respondents from province opolskie. The research in question combines in a way such fields of knowledge as anthropology, pedagogics and psychology; the aim of the combination is to explore the processes which support the development of a human being in light of andragogy. Two conceptions have constituted the theoretical and methodological …

Factores asociados al estrés prenatal y la ansiedad en gestantes durante el COVID-19 en España

2022

AIM OF THE STUDY To describe prenatal stress and state anxiety levels in pregnant women living in Spain during the lockdown of the first wave of COVID-19 and its relation with obstetric factors, perception of health care, and concerns about the socio-sanitary situation. METHODS The present study is an observational, correlational, and cross-sectional quantitative study. The participants in the study were pregnant women recruited through non-probabilistic convenience and snowball sampling during the lockdown. A web link was provided to an online questionnaire designed for this research, which collected socio-demographic and obstetric variables, perceptions of health care received during the …

Human-Animal Relationships in Supported Housing: Animal Atmospheres for Mental Health Recovery

2021

Being in a relationship with an animal can promote the well-being of people. For many individuals, this usually takes place at home. This study reports about homes for people with mental health problems (with or without co-occurring substance use), who live in supported housing operated by public landlords, entailing tenancies that are usually stricter regarding their pet policies than ordinary homes. We thus addressed the following research questions through ethnographic fieldwork at seven distinct places: which types of human–animal relationships occur in supported housing, and how do they affect the tenants? We analyzed the collected data informed by the Grounded Theory approach and foun…

Three-dimensional ultrasonography in prenatal diagnosis

1995

Within the past five years, 3D ultrasonography has developed to the degree that it offers both the patient and the examiner an entirely new visual experience in prenatal diagnosis. With the system described here (Kretz-technik, Austria), any desired plane can be displayed within the stored volume, and within seconds a high-quality 3D surface or transparent image can be calculated and displayed on the ultrasound monitor without need for an external workstation. All of this can be performed routinely in the clinical setting. Since 1989 we have routinely examined a total of 458 fetuses (242 normal and 216 with anomalies) between 16 and 38 weeks of gestation, supplementing our conventional 2D u…

Financial Aspects of Cervical Disc Arthroplasty: A Narrative Review of Recent Literature

2020

Recently, there has been significant interest in understanding the cost-effectiveness of treatments in spine surgery as health care systems in the United States move toward value-based care and alternative payment models. Previous studies have shown comparable outcomes of cervical disc arthroplasty (CDA) and anterior cervical discectomy fusion; however, there is a lack of consensus on the cost-effectiveness of CDA to support full adoption. Evidence of the limitations of these cost-analysis studies also exists in the literature, including industry funding, potential selection bias, and varying methods of calculating value. The goal of this narrative review is to provide an overview of the co…

Recent Developments in the Chiral Brønsted Acid-catalyzed Allylboration Reaction with Polyfunctionalized Substrates

2016

Asymmetric allylboration has played a central role in organic synthesis ever since the pioneering work by Hoffman and Brown, having found applications in the total synthesis of many natural products. A new dawn for this 40 year-old reaction occurred with the beginning of the new century when the first catalytic asymmetric methods came into play. In less than one decade, several methodologies, able to achieve the desired homoallylic alcohols with ee ranges in the high 90s, were developed. Among them, in the present account, we will disclose our contribution to the development of the chiral binolphosphoric-derived BrOnsted acid-catalyzed allylboration of aldehydes originally reported by Antil…

Highly Functionalized Brønsted Acidic/Lewis Basic Hybrid Ferrocene Ligands: Synthesis and Coordination Chemistry

2019

International audience; A general challenging issue in the synthesis of hemilabile ferrocene ligands is the access to highly functionalized ferrocene starting materials. These can bear donor/acceptor atoms, additional functional and structuring spectator substituents, but the preparation of such species poses general synthetic difficulties. We report herein alternative synthetic routes to hybrid ferrocene donors such as tert-butylated phosphanylcarboxylic acids and their corresponding aldehydes. These hybrid ambiphilic species that combine Brønsted-acidic and Lewis-basic functional moieties in their structure were characterized by multinuclear NMR and single-crystal X-ray diffraction analys…

A novel synthetic approach to pyran-2,4-dione scaffold production: Microwave-assisted dimerization, cyclization, and expeditious regioselective conve…

2020

Abstract Here, we report a novel, green, simple, low-cost, and rapid methodology for the high-yield production of pyran-2,4-dione scaffolds under microwave irradiation. Regio- and stereoselective conversions of β-diketone systems into β-enaminones were achieved using 18 primary amines and four amino acid esters. Microwave-assisted further cyclization of 3-(β-substitutedvinyl)-6-phenyl-pyran-2,4-dione into 3-benzoyl-4,7-diphenyl-2H,5H-pyrano[4,3-b]pyran-2,5-dione via reaction with ethyl benzoyl acetate.
