Why Do People Dislike Low-Wage Trade Competition with Posted Workers in the Service Sector?
2013
AbstractThe issue of low-wage competition in services trade involving posted workers is controversial in the EU. Using Swedish survey data, people's attitudes are found to be more negative to such trade than to goods trade. The differences depend on both a preference for favouring social groups to which individuals belong (the domestic population) and altruistic justice concerns for foreign workers. In small-group experiments, we find a tendency for people to adjust their evaluations of various aspects of trade to their general attitude. This tendency is stronger for those opposed to than those in favour of low-wage trade competition. This may indicate that the former group forms its attitu…
Portfolio performance evaluation with generalized Sharpe ratios: Beyond the mean and variance
2009
The main purpose of this paper is to present a theoretically sound portfolio performance measure that takes into account higher moments of the distribution of returns. First, we perform a study of the investor's preferences to higher moments of distribution within expected utility theory and discuss the performance measurement. To illustrate the investor's preferences to higher moments and the computation of a performance measure, we provide an approximation analysis of the optimal capital allocation problem and derive a formula for the Sharpe ratio adjusted for skewness of distribution. This performance measure justifies the notion of the Generalized Sharpe Ratio (GSR) introduced by Hodges…
Cooperation and teamwork in technology start-ups : reflected in some Italian, British, Dutch and German findings
2011
Cooperation and teamwork is often a challenge for technology start-ups. Cooperation is usually needed in order to combine the variety of expertise and it requires trust between partners. The idea of national locality is changing in European enterprises because of the new shared markets and possibilities for cooperation. In this article we explore technology start-ups taking an Italian sample (N = 20) from the Torino-Milano area as a benchmark. Survey findings as well as case-study interviews are used as data. Italians are reputed to be communitarian and family minded as part of their national culture. Such start-ups would prefer to cooperate locally. A questionnaire and in-depth interviews …
E-learning in radiology: an Italian multicentre experience.
2012
Objective: The aim of this study was to design, deliver and evaluate an e-learning teaching programme for post-graduate radiodiagnostics training that would involve various post-graduate schools throughout Italy. Materials and methods: All of the Directors of Italian post-graduate schools of radiodiagnostics were sent an e-mail on 27 September 2010 informing them of our willingness to set up an e-learning project for the academic year 2010-2011 in the form of single-subject teaching seminars. The proposed subjects were the semeiotics of the various organs and apparatuses in the context of "Urgent/Emergency Pathology". After having received registrations, a calendar of lessons was planned to…
Can easy-to-use software deliver effective e-learning in dental education? A randomised controlled study
2012
Introduction: For the production of computer-based learning environments, a wide range of software solutions can be used which differ not only in their functionality but also vary in cost and ease to program. The aim of our study was to evaluate the overall efficiency and student′s perception of two case-based e-learning programs that were produced with either an easy-to-use or a complex software. Materials and Methods: Eighty-five dental students were randomly assigned to one of two experimental groups. One group studied with a laborious, high-interactive e-learning program (complex-software group). The second group studied within a low-interactive learning environment (easy-software gro…
Kultūras ietekmes analīze uz 27 ES valstu Globālās Konkurētspējas indeksa vērtējumiem: Hofstedes kultūru dimensiju modelis
2019
Diplomdarba nosaukums ir “Kultūras ietekmes analīze uz 27 ES valstu Globālās Konkurētspējas indeksa vērtējumiem : Hofstedes kultūru dimensiju modelis”. Darba mērķis ir, izmantojot G. Hofstedes kultūru dimensiju modeli, izvērtēt valstu kultūrai raksturīgo īpašību ietekmi uz Pasaules Ekonomikas Foruma veidoto Konkurētspējas indeksa vērtējumu. Noskaidrot, kādas īpašības uzlabo un pasliktina valstu vērtējumu šajā indeksā. Darbs sastāv no 3 nodaļām.
Experimental characterization of a proton exchange membrane fuel-cell for hybrid electric pedal assisted cycles
2017
This paper presents a feasibility study on the prototyping of a hybrid EPAC (Electric Pedal Assisted Cycle) Through an FC-B-UC (Fuel Cell - Battery - Ultra-Capacitors) power system. Aim of this work is the characterization of a PEMFC (Proton Exchange Membrane Fuel Cell) in order to confirm its theoretical performances and to verify the possibility of its installation on an e-bike.
Evaluation of performance and efficiency and type approval of an electrically assisted bicycle drive
2013
The diffusion of electrically assisted bicycles gives rise to the need of the evaluation of the performance and efficiency of the electric drive that supply it. In this paper, is presented a test bench for the estimation of the electric drive output torque under several speed and load conditions. Moreover, the test bench detects the electrical and mechanical parameters that allow to evaluate the electrical drive efficiencies. The test bench has been designed in agreement with the Directive 2002/24/EC of the European Parliament since it detects the maximum continuous rated power (that must be lower than 0.25 kW) and evaluates if the output is progressively reduced and finally cut off as the …
Assisted reverse electrodialysis for CO2 electrochemical conversion and treatment of wastewater: A new approach towards more eco-friendly processes u…
2020
Abstract In this paper, the utilization of assisted reverse electrodialysis (A-RED), recently used for pre-desalination, is proposed as a general method to reduce the energy requirements of electrolysis processes and evaluated for two model processes: (i) the cathodic conversion of carbon dioxide to formic acid; (ii) the anodic treatment of water contaminated by organics. In A-RED, two solutions with different salt content and an external potential difference, applied in the direction of the natural salinity gradient, are both used to drive redox processes. It was shown, for the first time, that the cathodic conversion of CO2 to formic acid can be performed by both reverse electrodialysis (…
