REGULATORY ELEMENTS OF THE LEUKAEMIA INHIBITORY FACTOR (LIF) PROMOTER IN MURINE BONE MARROW STROMAL CELLS

1999

Leukaemia inhibitory factor (LIF) plays an important role as a haematopoietically active cytokine. As described earlier in a murine model, interleukin 1 (IL-1) induced LIF mRNA and protein expression. We utilized the murine cell line +/+-1.LDA11 to further define regulatory mechanisms of LIF expression in bone marrow stromal cells. The production of LIF mRNA is stimulated by IL-1beta, TNF-alpha, and the cAMP analogue 8-bromoadenosine 3':5'-monophosphate (8BrcAMP). LIF mRNA expression is controlled at the transcriptional level. Different fragments from -542 to -45 bp 5' upstream of the transcriptional start site of the murine LIF gene were fused to the luciferase gene. All LIF-promoter lucif…

Update on mechanism and therapeutic implications of spinal cord stimulation and cerebral hemodynamics: A narrative review

2017

Spinal cord stimulation (SCS) is well known for its early role in the management of chronic pain, mainly failed back surgery syndrome (FBSS), spasticity, and bowel and bladder dysfunction. In more recent years, SCS has been proposed for patients suffering from refractory angina or peripheral vasculopathies in order to gain symptom relief, thus indicating some hemodynamic effect on the peripheral circulation. Taking into account this scientific observation, since the late1980s, researchers have started to investigate the potential effect of SCS on cerebral blood flow (CBF) regulation and its possible application in certain pathological settings dealing with vascular pattern dysfunction, such…

Noninvasive Flap Preconditioning by Foam-Mediated External Suction Improves the Survival of Fasciocutaneous Axial-Pattern Flaps in a Type 2 Diabetic …

2018

Background Advances in reconstructive surgery are leading to an increased number of flaps at risk for ischemic necrosis, because of either intrinsic (e.g., larger flap size) or extrinsic (e.g., diabetes) factors. Methods to preoperatively improve flap vascularity and limit postoperative ischemia are lacking. Noninvasive suction, using either a macrodeformational silicone cup interface (external volume expansion) or a microdeformational polyurethane foam interface (foam-mediated external volume expansion), has been shown to induce angiogenesis in tissues. The authors investigated whether the preoperative use of external volume expansion/foam-mediated external volume expansion improves flap s…

Specificity and Restriction of T Cells in a System of Complementing Ir Genes

1983

The phenomenon of Ir gene control of immune responsiveness is intimately related to the fact that antigen-specific stimulation of T cells with the Lyt-1 surface phenotype requires the simultaneous recognition of both external antigen and Ia antigen on the surface of antigen-presenting cells. There is increasing evidence indicating that Ia antigens encoded for by the I-A and I-E/C subregions of the H-2 complex represent the products of Ir genes.

Sensory and sympathetic correlates of heat pain sensitization and habituation in men and women

2012

Background Habituation and sensitization are important behavioural responses to repeated exposure to painful stimuli, but little is known about the factors determining sensory, affective and sympathetic habituation to repeated pain stimulation in men and women. Methods Thirty volunteers (15 women) underwent a standardized heat pain paradigm spread over 8 consecutive days. At the beginning of the experiment, personality dimensions, coping strategies and pain catastrophizing thoughts were determined. Receiving a series of 10 blocks of six painful heat stimuli a day, participants rated pain intensity and unpleasantness. Skin conductance was recorded throughout the sessions. Results and Conclus…

RELEASE BY SYMPATHETIC STIMULATION OF ALPHA-METHYLNORADRENALINE STORED IN THE HEART AFTER ADMINISTRATION OF ALPHA-METHYLDOPA.

1963

Disruption of T helper 2-immune responses in Epstein–Barr virus-induced gene 3-deficient mice

2002

Epstein–Barr virus-induced gene 3 (EBI3) is a widely expressed IL-12p40-related protein that associates as a heterodimer with either IL-12p35 or an IL-12p35 homologue, p28, to create a new cytokine (IL-27). To define the function of EBI3in vivo, we generated knockout mice in which theebi3gene was targeted by homologous recombination. EBI3−/−mice exhibited normal numbers of both naive and mature CD4+and CD8+T cells and B cells, but markedly decreased numbers of invariant natural killer T cells (iNKT) as defined by staining with an α-galactosylceramide (αGalCer)-loaded CD1d-tetramer. iNKT cells from EBI3−/−mice exhibited decreased IL-4 and, to a lesser extent, IFN-γ production after αGalCer s…

The transcranial stimulation with direct currents (tdcs): An historical and conceptual minireview

2018

Transcranial Stimulation with Direct Currents (tDCS) is a method for non invasive brain stimulation created to induce functional changes in cerebral cortex. tDCS consists of application on the scalp of electrodes providing a low intensity direct current influencing neuronal functions. tDCS is not the only neurostimulation method for neuroscience clinical practice and research and can be used for treat many different clinical conditions such as migraine prevention, autism spectrum disorders (ASD), cerebral palsy rehabilitation, post-traumatic brain injury neuropsychological disorders.

The Role of the Cerebellum in Social and Non-Social Action Sequences: A Preliminary LF-rTMS Study

2021

An increasing number of studies demonstrated the involvement of the cerebellum in (social) sequence processing. The current preliminary study is the first to investigate the causal involvement of the cerebellum in sequence generation, using low-frequency repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation (LF-rTMS). By targeting the posterior cerebellum, we hypothesized that the induced neuro-excitability modulation would lead to altered performance on a Picture and Story sequencing task, which involve the generation of the correct chronological order of various social and non-social stories depicted in cartoons or sentences. Our results indicate that participants receiving LF-rTMS over the cerebe…
