Launching propagating surface plasmon polaritons by a single carbon nanotube dipolar emitter.
2011
International audience; We report on the excitation of propagating surface plasmon polaritons in thin metal films by a single emitter. Upon excitation in the visible regime, individual semiconducting single-walled carbon nanotubes are shown to act as directional near-infrared point dipole sources launching propagating surface plasmons mainly along the direction of the nanotube axis. Plasmon excitation and propagation is monitored in Fourier and real space by leakage radiation microscopy and is modeled by rigorous theoretical calculations. Coupling to plasmons almost completely reshapes the emission of nanotubes both spatially and with respect to polarization as compared to photoluminescence…
Surfactant-Dependent Exciton Mobility in Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes Studied by Single-Molecule Reactions
2010
Measurements of stepwise photoluminescence quenching in individual, (n,m)-selected single-walled carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) undergoing chemical reaction have been analyzed to deduce mobilities of optically generated excitons. For (7,5) nanotubes, the mean exciton range varies between approximately 140 and 240 nm for different surfactant coatings and correlates weakly with nanotube PL intensity. The results are consistent with a model of localized SWCNT excitons having substantial diffusional mobility along the nanotube axis.
Hierarchical Assembly of TiO2 Nanoparticles on WS2 Nanotubes Achieved Through Multifunctional Polymeric Ligands
2007
Thefunctionalization of nanotubes is required in order to bene-fit from their outstanding properties, as any application inmaterials and devices is hindered by processing and manipu-lation difficulties. Only the attachment of appropriate chem-ical functionalities on the nanotube surface allows tailoringof the properties for the respective applications. As an ex-ample, the enhancement of the nanotube solubility is onemajor task since most pristine nanotubes are insoluble inboth water and organic solvents. Thus, the improvement ofthe solubility by chemical functionalization is an importantconcept for synthetic chemists and materials scientists. Tai-loring of the surface chemical bonds might a…
In situ nucleation of carbon nanotubes by the injection of carbon atoms into metal particles.
2007
The synthesis of carbon nanotubes (CNTs) of desired chiralities and diameters is one of the most important challenges in nanotube science and achieving such selectivity may require a detailed understanding of their growth mechanism. We report the formation of CNTs in an entirely condensed phase process that allows us, for the first time, to monitor the nucleation of a nanotube on the spherical surface of a metal particle. When multiwalled CNTs containing metal particle cores are irradiated with an electron beam, carbon from graphitic shells surrounding the metal particles is ingested into the body of the particle and subsequently emerges as single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) or multiwalled nan…
Drug delivery devices based on mesoporous silicate.
2004
A mesoporous material based on aluminosilicate mixture was studied to investigate its ability to include drugs and then release them. Nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory agents such as diflunisal, naproxen, ibuprofen and its sodium salt have been used in this study. The preparation of the mesoporous material and its characterization by X-ray, N2 absorption-desorption isotherm, and thermogravimetry analysis have been described. Drug loading was performed by a soaking procedure. Drug-loaded matrices were characterized for entrapped drug amount, water absorption ability, and thermogravimetric behavior. Drug release studies also were performed at pH 1.1 and 6.8 mimicking gastrointestinal fluids. Exp…
The Logic of User Interface Design
2016
Technical artefacts exist so that people can use them to make something happen. Their capacity to do so depends on the functions and functionalities of the technology, which requires users. Technologies thus have to give users the ability to control them, and the designer’s role is to create the actions and work processes for which the artefacts are intended. This basic HTI pursuit is called user interface design. It applies technical interaction concepts to solve design problems. This chapter presents the overall principles and goals for the user interface design of any technical artefact.
Biowaiver Monograph for Immediate-Release Solid Oral Dosage Forms: Ondansetron.
2019
Literature data pertaining to the physicochemical, pharmaceutical, and pharmacokinetic properties of ondansetron hydrochloride dihydrate are reviewed to arrive at a decision on whether a marketing authorization of an immediate release (IR) solid oral dosage form can be approved based on a Biopharmaceutics Classification System (BCS)-based biowaiver. Ondansetron, a 5HT3 receptor antagonist, is used at doses ranging from 4 mg to 24 mg in the management of nausea and vomiting associated with chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and postoperative treatment. It is a weak base and thus exhibits pH-dependent solubility. However, it is able to meet the criteria of "high solubility" as well as "high permeabi…
Strongyloides natricissp. n.
1989
SUMMARY. Description and differentiation of the parasite stage of Strongyloides mascomai sp. n. (Nematoda: Strongyloididae), an cloacal parasite of Rana perezi Seoane, 1885 in the east of Iberian Peninsula (Spain). The new species is charac-terized for its large length of the oesophagus, the morphology of its stoma and the moderate spiralation of the ovaries of the female parasite.
Applying polygenic risk scoring for psychiatric disorders to a large family with bipolar disorder and major depressive disorder
2018
Psychiatric disorders are thought to have a complex genetic pathology consisting of interplay of common and rare variation. Traditionally, pedigrees are used to shed light on the latter only, while here we discuss the application of polygenic risk scores to also highlight patterns of common genetic risk. We analyze polygenic risk scores for psychiatric disorders in a large pedigree (n ~ 260) in which 30% of family members suffer from major depressive disorder or bipolar disorder. Studying patterns of assortative mating and anticipation, it appears increased polygenic risk is contributed by affected individuals who married into the family, resulting in an increasing genetic risk over generat…
