Oxygen permeability of hydrogel contact lenses with organosilicon moieties
2002
Oxygen transport through two extended wear (day and night) hydrogel contact lenses that contain organosilicon moieties (balafilcon A and lotrafilcon A) was studied in the hydrate (hydrogel) and dry (xerogel) states. The water uptake increased the oxygen permeability [(Dk)app] and transmissibility [Dk/L(av)] coefficients of the dry materials by about 70%. The (Dk)app for the hydrated lenses was determined following the so-called stack procedure. The values obtained were 107 +/- 4 barrer for balafilcon A and 141 +/- 5 barrer for lotrafilcon A, about 5-10 times larger than those previously reported for conventional (without organosilicon moieties) extended wear hydrogels contact lenses. The Dk…
Refractive micro-optical elements for surface plasmons: from classical to gradient index optics.
2010
Controlling the propagation of surface plasmons along a metal-dielectric interface is a key feature for the development of surface plasmon based circuits. We have designed various two-dimensional refractive dielectric optical elements for surface plasmons (SP) and characterized their capacity to route SP, using near- or far-field techniques. We first present basic devices analogous to usual optical components and the associated challenges for SP optics. We then use a metamaterial approach to locally vary the refractive index and fabricate gradient index structures for SP circuitry.
Moiré with zone plates pseudo-randomly encoded
1993
Abstract Moire patterns are a convenient method for optically sensing lateral displacements, or in-plane rotations. Sharp moire fringes are here created by using two zone plates, pseudo-randomly encoded. Our results may be useful in metrology, optical testing, and robotics. Experimental results are reported.
Iterative Optimal Design of Special Moment Resisting Devices for Steel Frames
2021
Abstract The present paper proposes an iterative procedure devoted to reaching the optimal design of an innovative, recently proposed, moment resisting device. This special device, called Limited Resistance Plastic Device (LRPD), can be utilized, as an example, to equip a steel frame when it is required that the frame must be designed to substitute a masonry panel, i.e., it must be characterized by a structural behaviour as close as possible to the one of the replaced masonry wall. This purpose can be reached by designing the relevant frame imposing appropriate constraints on the elastic stiffness and on the limit resistance. The result can be obtained just by ensuring that the elastic stif…
A Generalized Framework for Optimal Sizing of Distributed Energy Resources in Micro-Grids Using an Indicator-Based Swarm Approach
2014
In this paper, a generalized double-shell framework for the optimal design of systems managed optimally according to different criteria is developed. Optimal design is traditionally carried out by means of minimum capital and management cost formulations and does not typically consider optimized operation. In this paper, the optimized multiobjective management is explicitly considered into the design formulation. The quality of each design solution is indeed defined by the evaluation of operational costs and capital costs. Besides, the assessment of the operational costs term is deduced by means of the solution of a multiobjective optimization problem. Each design solution is evaluated usin…
Optimal Design of Trusses According to a Plastic Shakedown Criterion
2004
The optimal design of elastic-perfectly plastic truss structures subjected to quasi-statically loads variable within a given load domain is studied. The actions are given as the combination of fixed load and perfect cyclic load. Suitably chosen load multipliers are given. A minimum volume formulation of the design problem with assigned limit load multiplier is developed and it is provided on the grounds of a statical approach as well as of a kinematical approach. The incremental collapse (ratchetting) of the optimal structure is prevented, as long as the loads are not greater than some prescribed values, by special constraints suitably introduced in the search problem. The Kuhn-Tucker equat…
Base-isolated structure equipped with tuned liquid column damper: An experimental study
2019
Abstract In this study, a novel passive vibration control strategy is investigated experimentally, where a Tuned Liquid Column Damper protects a base-isolated structure. The Tuned Liquid Column Damper is attached to the base, in contrast to typical attachment points of passive energy dissipation devices in high-rise buildings at elevated levels. Experiments on a base-excited small-scale three-story shear frame are conducted in order to study effects of both control devices – base-isolation and Tuned Liquid Column Damper – on the structural model. The dynamic properties of the stand-alone shear frame and the base-isolation subsystem are derived using standard dynamic test methods based on di…
Impeller optimization in crossflow hydraulic turbines
2021
Crossflow turbines represent a valuable choice for energy recovery in aqueducts, due to their constructive simplicity and good efficiency under variable head jump conditions. Several experimental and numerical studies concerning the optimal design of crossflow hydraulic turbines have already been proposed, but all of them assume that structural safety is fully compatible with the sought after geometry. We show first, with reference to a specific study case, that the geometry of the most efficient impeller would lead shortly, using blades with a traditional circular profile made with standard material, to their mechanical failure. A methodology for fully coupled fluid dynamic and mechanical …
Multiple-criteria cash-management policies with particular liquidity terms
2019
Abstract Eliciting policies for cash management systems with multiple assets is by no means straightforward. Both the particular relationship between alternative assets and time delays from control decisions to availability of cash introduce additional difficulties. Here we propose a cash management model to derive short-term finance policies when considering multiple assets with different expected returns and particular liquidity terms for each alternative asset. In order to deal with the inherent uncertainty about the near future introduced by cash flows, we use forecasts as a key input to the model. We express uncertainty as lack of predictive accuracy and we derive a deterministic equiv…
A Novel Multi-hop Broadcasting Method for VANETs Based on Autonomic Computing Paradigm
2014
One of the three best papers, Selected for the Annals of Telecommunications journal; International audience; Broadcasting is widely used in Vehicular Ad hoc Networks (VANETs) but it is hard to achieve efficiently since it depends on the network density, i.e. may cause network congestion if the protocols are not well designed. This paper introduces a novel Autonomic Dissemination Method (ADM) which delivers messages in accordance with given priority and density levels. The proposed approach is based on two steps: an offline optimization process and an online adaptation to the network characteristics. The aim is to make effective use of radio resources when there are many messages to send imu…
