3 ′-5 ′ crosstalk contributes to transcriptional bursting

2019

Abstract Background Transcription in mammalian cells is a complex stochastic process involving shuttling of polymerase between genes and phase-separated liquid condensates. It occurs in bursts, which results in vastly different numbers of an mRNA species in isogenic cell populations. Several factors contributing to transcriptional bursting have been identified, usually classified as intrinsic, in other words local to single genes, or extrinsic, relating to the macroscopic state of the cell. However, some possible contributors have not been explored yet. Here, we focus on processes at the 3 ′ and 5 ′ ends of a gene that enable reinitiation of transcription upon termination. Motor Cortex Function in Fibromyalgia: A Study by Functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy

2019

Previous studies indicated changes of motor cortex excitability in fibromyalgia (FM) patients and the positive results of transcranial stimulation techniques. The present study aimed to explore the metabolism of motor cortex in FM patients, in resting state and during slow and fast finger tapping, using functional Near-Infrared Spectroscopy (fNIRS), an optical method which detects in real time the metabolism changes in the cortical tissue. We studied 24 FM patients and 24 healthy subjects. We found a significant slowness of motor speed in FM patients compared to controls. During resting state and slow movement conditions, the metabolism of the motor areas was similar between groups. The oxy…

Survey of Italian Pediatricians on awareness, experiences and beliefs regarding direct-to-consumer genetic testing in minors

2022

Background: Our study wanted to assess Italian pediatricians’ awareness, experience and beliefs regarding directto-consumer (DTC) genetic tests (GT) in minors, with a focus on those for predisposition to complex disease, lyfestyle, athletic ability and other inborn talents.
Methods: A 28-item questionnaire was administered through the SurveyMonkey® web platform to the 9,086 members of the Italian Society of Pediatrics for which a valid email address was available. The survey was opened from April through November 2017. Statistical analyses were performed using the Graphpad software package.
Results: 36.2% of the 442 respondents were aware of DTC-GT, but only 23.1% of them…

Trial profile: pilot study of the multicentre randomised trial of H. pylori eradication and pepsinogen testing for prevention of gastric cancer morta…

2019

Purpose: The GISTAR Pilot study is part of a large multi-centre randomised trial conducted in Latvia with the main aim to evaluate preventive strategies to decrease mortality from gastric cancer in high-risk areas, especially in the Baltic States and Eastern Europe. Participants: A total of 3,447 apparently healthy, asymptomatic participants (40-64 y/o) were recruited between 2013 and 2015 for the GISTAR pilot study. Participants were interviewed for socio-economic status, lifestyle, environmental and occupational exposures, medical history, family history of diseases, and dietary habits. Participants were randomly assigned to either Intervention (n=1,724) or Control (n=1,723) group. The in…

WHO HAS TO UNDERGO CANCER GENETIC TESTING? A PERSPECTIVE.

2017

Genetic testing is a medical tool employed to screen changes in genes linked to cancer and other genetic diseases. Genetic tests are available for breast, ovarian, colon, thyroid, and some other cancers and they represent the main tool for early identification of the “risk” subjects. The choice to undergo genetic testing by a healthy or affected cancer patient with family history of the cancer has to be the fruit of a careful and prudent assessment of the advantages and disadvantages discussed during oncogenetic counselling. The latter, in turn, in the case of a patient's positive and informed choice, must constantly affiliate the genetic testing, in order to preserve the prediction and inf…

Menopausal Status and Physical Activity Are Independently Associated With Cardiovascular Risk Factors of Healthy Middle-Aged Women: Cross-Sectional a…

2019

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is the primary cause of mortality in women in developed countries. CVD risk rises with age, yet for women there is a rapid increase in CVD risk that occurs after the onset of menopause. This observation suggests the presence of factors in the middle-aged women that accelerate the progression of CVD independent of chronological aging. Leisure time physical activity (LTPA) is a well-established protective factor against CVD. However, its role in attenuating atherogenic lipid profile changes and CVD risk in post-menopausal women has not been well-established. The present study is part of the Estrogenic Regulation of Muscle Apoptosis (ERMA) study, a population-based…

The Influence of Fatigue on Throwing and YBT-UQ Performance in Male Adolescent Handball Players

2020

Purpose: The goal of the present study was to assess the effects of fatigue on throwing and Upper Quarter Y Balance Test (YBT-UQ) performance in male adolescent handball players. We hypothesized that throwing and YBT-UQ performance will be decreased in response to an upper-body fatigue-protocol.Method: All male participants (N = 24, age: 14.8 ± 0.7 yrs) were handball players of a regional youth selection team. A radar gun was used for the assessment of throwing velocity. The YBT-UQ was executed assessing medial, inferolateral and superolateral reach directions normalized to the upper limb length together with a composite score. Immediately following a fatigue protocol of different sets of p…

A Quantitative Method for Localizing User Interface Problems: The D-TEO Method

2009

A large array of evaluation methods have been propo sed to identify Website usability problems. In log-based evaluation, inform ation about the performance of users is collected and stored into log files, and used to find problems and deficiencies in Web page designs. Most methods require the programming and modeling of large task models, which are cumbersome processes for evaluato rs. Also, because much statistical data is collected onto log files, recognizing which Web pages require deeper usability analysis is difficult. This paper suggests a novel quantitative method, called the D-TEO, for locating problematic Web pages. This semiautoma ted method explores the decomposition of interacti…

Interpretazione cognitiva, interpretazione decisoria, interpretazione creativa

2013

The article critically reviews Riccardo Guastini’s theory of legal interpretation, as it is now exposed in the recent book Interpretare e argomentare. While broadly sympathetic with Guastini’s jurisprudential project, the author tries to highlight some weaknesses in his conceptual framework – namely, regarding the distinction between “scientific” and “decisional” interpretation, the distinction between interpretation properly understood and creation of new law, and the concept of interpretive creativity
