Minorities' communication apprehension and conflict : an investigation of Kurds in Iran and Malays in Singapore
2017
This research project investigates the relationship between communication apprehension and conflict in the intergroup context of minority and majority relationships. Previous studies of communication apprehension have extensively examined its characteristics in the intercultural context of mostly the USA and Eastern Asians cultures. However, the minority-majority intergroup relationship represents distinctive yet understudied characteristics related to socioeconomic status of the groups, which potentially influence their intergroup conflicts. Furthermore, previous communication research called for more in- depth investigation of the various regions. In the light of such considerations, the …
Coibenti per "cappotto" esterno. Valutazione con metodologia LCA
2010
Numerical and experimental study of liquid metal stirring by rotating permanent magnets
2018
In this work, we study liquid gallium stirring by rotating permanent magnets. We demonstrate possibility of easily creating different flow patterns by rotating permanent magnets, which can be industrially important for controlling heat and mass transfer processes in the system. Unlike the typical approach of simulating magnet rotation as a transient problem and time-averaging the Lorentz forces, we solve the magnet rotation as a harmonic (frequency domain) problem, which leads to forces equal to time-averaged ones and decreases the simulation time considerably. Numerical results are validated using qualitative flow structure results from the neutron radiography visualization of tracer parti…

Experimental and numerical analysis on post welding formability of FSWed AZ31 magnesium alloy thin joints obtained using a "Pinless" tool configurati…
2012
The post welding formability of friction stir welded AZ31 magnesium alloy thin sheets (1.5 mm thick), obtained using a “pinless” tool configuration, was widely investigated by means of the hemispherical punch method at 350°C, with a constant crosshead speed of 0.1 mm/s. The results were compared with those obtained on the base material. It has shown that formability of the joints is lower than the one of the base material. The experimental work was supported by a numerical investigation based on FEM in order to highlight the material flow occurring during the welding process. Additionally, hemispherical punch tests were simulated starting from the calculated conditions, in terms of accumula…

Vector Transmission of a Plant-Pathogenic Bacterium in the Arsenophonus Clade Sharing Ecological Traits with Facultative Insect Endosymbionts
2009
Bressan, A., Semetey, O., Arneodo, J., Lherminier, J., and BoudonPadieu, E. 2009. Vector transmission of a plant-pathogenic bacterium in the Arsenophonus clade sharing ecological traits with facultative insect endosymbionts. Phytopathology 99:1289-1296. The planthopper Pentastiridius leporinus (Hemiptera: Cixiidae) is the major vector of a nonculturable plant-pathogenic γ-3 proteobacterium associated with a disease of sugar beet called syndrome “basses richesses” (SBR). The bacterium, here called SBR bacterium, belongs to the Arsenophonous clade, which includes mostly insect-associated facultative symbionts. Assays using field-collected planthopper nymphs and adults were carried out to inve…
Simplified dynamic pressure method for kLa measurement in aerated bioreactors
2010
Abstract A simplified version of the dynamic pressure method for measuring mass-transfer coefficients in gas–liquid systems is proposed. With this method oxygen concentration in the liquid phase is monitored after a sudden change of total pressure is applied to the system. With respect to the original technique introduced by Linek [14] the simplified version here proposed greatly simplifies the data treatment, yet resulting in good accuracy for most practical purposes. In practice, with the help of a simple mathematical model, it is found that the dynamic oxygen concentration response, when plotted as residual driving force versus time in a semi-log diagram, should be expected to finally se…
Gas-liquid-solid Operation of a High Aspect Ratio Self-ingesting Reactor
2012
Gas-liquid stirred vessels are widely employed to carry out chemical reactions involving a gas reagent and a liquid phase. The usual way for introducing the gas stream into the liquid phase is through suitable distributors placed below the impeller. An interesting alternative is that of using “self ingesting” vessels where the headspace gas phase is injected and dispersed into the vessel through suitable surface vortices. In this work the performance of a Long Draft Tube Self-ingesting Reactor (LDTSR) dealing with three-phase (gas-liquid-solid) systems, is investigated. Preliminary experimental results on the effectiveness of this contactor for particle suspension and gas-liquid mass transf…
Mass transfer and hydrodinamic characteristics of a high aspect ratio self-ingesting reactor for gas-liquid operations
2007
Abstract The mass transfer performance of a gas–liquid self-ingesting stirred reactor is reported both for coalescing and non-coalescing systems. The vessel features are a high aspect ratio and a rather narrow multiple-impeller draft tube, through which the gas phase is ingested and led down to the vessel bottom, where it is finely dispersed into the liquid rising in the annular portion of the vessel. Comparison is made between k L a values determined by several variants of the dynamic method, among which pure oxygen absorption in a previously de-gassed liquid phase. Results show that the gas–liquid mass transfer coefficient values obtained with the last approach are remarkably larger than …
