Motivation to Study for PhD Degree: Case of Latvia

AbstractThis paper studies what goals individuals pursue when enrolling in doctoral studies and how it affects the characteristics of the university they find important for choosing it and information sources on doctoral programme they find useful. It uses data collected in 2014 from PhD students and PhD candidates in 14 universities in Latvia and from students born in Latvia but studying abroad. Exchange period as a motivating factor in business students' ideal L2 self development - or not?
2017
Vaikka motivaatio englannin oppimisessa on vuosikymmeniä ollut yksi soveltavan kielitieteen keskeisimpiä tutkimuskohteita, on mahdollisia muutoksia opiskelijoiden motivaatiossa vaihto-opiskelun aikana ja vaikutuksia tulevaisuuden minäkuviin englannin kielen käyttäjänä tutkittu suomalaisessa kontekstissa vain vähän. Opiskelijavaihto ulkomaisessa yliopistossa houkuttelee kansainvälistymisen ja kielitaidon parantamisen takia yhä useampia kauppatieteiden opiskelijoita, sillä englannin osaaminen on nykypäivän globaalien markkinoiden ja kansainvälisen kaupan takia heille ensisijaisen tärkeää. Tutkimukseni tarkoituksena on selvittää mahdollisen vaihto-opiskelun vaikutuksia sekä kauppatieteiden opi…
Dampness and student-reported social climate: two multilevel mediation models.
2021
Background Little previous research has analysed the relationship between schools' indoor air problems and schools' social climate. In this study, we analysed a) whether observed mould and dampness in a school building relates to students' perceptions of school climate (i.e. teacher-student relationships and class spirit) and b) whether reported subjective indoor air quality (IAQ) at the school level mediates this relationship. Methods The data analysed was created by merging two nationwide data sets: survey data from students, including information on subjective IAQ (N = 25,101 students), and data from schools, including information on mould and dampness in school buildings (N = 222). The …
Multisensorās stratēģijas skolēnu ar speciālajām vajadzībām iesaistīšanai angļu valodas stundās pamatskolā
2015
Everyday Family Life and Multiple Roles of the Female Doctoral Students
2017
Combining work and family life, and the challenges and solutions connected to it is a topical and globally significant subject. In the article I examine how the under 40-year-old female doctoral students with a family succeed in combining their roles as a mother and a doctoral student in their own everyday lives. A number of large and simultaneous challenges condense in the everyday life of an under 40-year-old female doctoral student with a family. In the examination I concentrate on the everyday challenges of the female doctoral student, on the interface of the family and the doctoral studies and on the choices made in everyday life. The qualitative research material consisted of the them…
Sisters of the Brotherhood: Alienation and Inclusion in Learning Philosophy
2023
This open access book explores the gendered reality of learning philosophy at the university level, investigating the ways in which women and minority students become alienated from the social practices of a male-dominated field, and examining pedagogical solutions to this problem. It covers the roles and the interactions of the professor and student in the following ways: (1) the historical situation, (2) the affective, social and bodily situation, and (3) the moral situation. This text analyzes women’s passion for philosophy as a quest for truth, as well as their partial alienation from the social practices of philosophy. It demonstrates that recognition, generosity, and care are central …
Agency in first-semester university students’ career plans
2014
In this paper I examine expressions of agency in autobiographical narratives by Finnish speaking university students of Swedish. Students who write about themselves, their decisions and their career plans are simultaneously involved in (re)constructing their identities. The narratives often include references to “communities of practice” (Lave & Wenger 1991; Wenger 1998) that the students consider as significant, and whose membership they see as something worth dreaming of. These kinds of first-person stories can be regarded as important as far as identity formation is concerned (Sfard & Prusak 2005). The narratives can help in building a bridge between the narrator’s past, the present and …
Natural philosophy in the system of ideological orientations of the individual
2016
W pracy omówiono znaczenie i zasady filozofii przyrody, stanowiącej gałąź nauk filozoficznych, dla racjonalnego pojmowania integralności natury i zasad jej funkcjonowania.
A classification of motivation and behavior change techniques used in self-determination theory-based interventions in health contexts
2020
While evidence suggests that interventions based on self-determination theory have efficacy in motivating adoption and maintenance of health-related behaviors, and in promoting adaptive psychological outcomes, the motivational techniques that comprise the content of these interventions have not been comprehensively identified or described. The aim of the present study was to develop a classification system of the techniques that comprise self-determination theory interventions, with satisfaction of psychological needs as an organizing principle. Candidate techniques were identified through a comprehensive review of self-determination theory interventions and nomination by experts. The study…
Mentālo slimību kategorizācija un pieņemšana vācu medicīnas studentu vidū
2020
Saskar…
