The pblm package: semiparametric regression for bivariate categorical responses in R
2014
We present an R package to fit semiparametric regression models for two categorical responses. It works for both nominal and ordered responses and several types of logits can be specified. Proportional, non-proportional and partial proportional odds models can be fitted, with marginal and association parameters estimated in a parametric or semiparametric way, via penalized maximum likelihood estimation. An application to show the potential of the package is carried out on a data set of Italian university students.
Enhancing Cross-Cultural Competence Among Students In An Effort To Fill The Skills Gap In The European Labor Market
2020
Goal –The purpose of this paper is to present the methodology of the research project concerning an international mobility program conducted among 5 European universities. Methodology – The project presents a methodological approach in two stages so as to discuss the appropriateness and validity of assumptions and research methods we applied. The aim of this research is to investigate the results of specific experiences as part of an exchange program on CCC development among European students. The subject of this research will be a group of 45 students representing 5 European universities who will visit these universities every 3 months for 1 week during a two-year mobility program. Finding…
Creating Managerial Ethical Profiles: An Exploratory Cluster Analysis
2008
This study profiles managers according to the ethical criteria they bring to their managerial decision making. Profiling was based on exploratory cluster analysis of responses of academics & students and small business managers to a multidimensional questionnaire. The data were collected through a self-reporting survey (n=82) administrated to the two cohorts. An agglomerative hierarchical cluster analysis was then performed to the two groups separately on the 8 ethical subscales from the Managerial Ethical Profile (MEP). Between-groups linkage method and squared binary Euclidean distance measures were used to cluster groups in the given data sets. Five clusters were found as an optimal numb…
Variation of student engagement between different algebra tasks
2018
In this study, we analyse how 7th grade students’ engagement during small group work differed in two consecutive algebra lessons: in the first lesson students solved equa-tions and in the second lesson they created equations for other small groups to solve. Data was collected by videorecording the work of two groups in both lessons. Through directed content analysis, categories indicating student engagement were formed based on previous research and refined during analysis. The analysis revealed a change from individual engagement to collaborative engagement between lessons and an increase in many passive students’ engagement. Task characteristics which may affect the type and amount of eng…

Dimensiones del Ecosistema Digital Universitario: Validación del Instrumento «University Digital Ecosystem» (UN-DIGECO) / Dimensions of the Universit…
2020
Students' Perceptions of Forest Industries Business Ethics - A Comparative Analysis of Finland and the USA
2010
It has been recognised that personal values have a significant impact on views of business ethics. The basic purpose of this paper is to describe and compare student perceptions of business ethics in Finland and the USA. Galda spēles skolēnu runāšanas prasmju attīstībai 4. klases angļu valodas stundās
2022

The implications of teachers’ implicit theories for moral education: A case study from Finland
2017
Implicit theories concerning the malleability of human qualities are known to have a powerful impact on motivation and learning, but their role in moral education is an under-researched topic. In this qualitative case study, we examined the impact of implicit theories on four Finnish teachers’ practices of teaching morally and in teaching morality. The data include preliminary and stimulated recall interviews (STR) as well as classroom observations. Our results demonstrate the multiple ways in which teachers’ implicit beliefs are communicated to students and influence teacher’s interpretations and endeavors to educate the ethical capabilities of students. The study provides evidence for the…
