Children's exploration of the concepts of home and belonging: Capturing views from five European countries.
2021
Understanding one's sense of belonging is a central part of identity formation and self-awareness; feeling safe somewhere, with specific people is identified as a basic human need. Whilst there were differences in the ways that the children conceptualised home across the classes, even the youngest children were able to describe their ideas using metaphors and abstract conce…
Students' school‐level symptoms mediate the relationship between a school's observed moisture problems and students’ subjective perceptions of indoor…
2020
Moisture damage can influence the subjective assessment of indoor air quality (subjective IAQ) in various ways. We studied whether the frequency of symptoms reported across students at school level mediates the relationship between observed mold and dampness in a school building and students' subjective IAQ. To answer this research question, we tested a multilevel path model. The analyzed data were created by merging two nationwide data sets: (a) survey data from students, including information on subjective IAQ (N = 24,786 students); (b) data from schools, including information on mold and dampness in a school building (N = 222). After the background variables were adjusted, schools' obser…
Socio-emotional Problems Experienced by Deaf and Hard of Hearing Students in Ethiopia
2015
This study compares the socio-emotional problems experienced by deaf and hard of hearing (DHH) students with those of hearing students in Ethiopia. The research involved a sample of 103 grade 4 students attending a special school for the deaf, a special class for the deaf and a regular school. Socio-emotional problems were measured using Goodman's self-report measure, the Strengths and Difficulties Questionnaire for children and adolescents. Participants were selected from seven towns in Ethiopia. The results show that, compared to the hearing sample, the DHH students experienced more severe socio-emotional problems across all dimensions, regardless of whether they were in special classes o…

The difficulties of adapting university teaching for students with disabilities : an analysis focussed on inclusive guidance
2012
The need for specific attention for the personal, social, academic and professional development of students with disabilities is a challenge that the university is committed to. Although significant progress has been made, promoted by an inclusive educational approach, there are still many difficulties faced by students to intergrate into university education. To advance a deeper understanding of the issues affecting these students, research has been conducted with a sample of 113 students with disabilities from different centers in the University of La Laguna (Spain). The results have highlighted, the lack of guidance and information regarding access to university courses, the need to impl…
Using schematic representation of resource systems to examine how first year engineering students use resources in their studies of mathematics
2018
International audience; Very little research has been done on how students use resources when studying mathematics. My project aim to examine this both quantitatively and qualitatively. The qualitative data collection includes hierarchical focus interviews and schematic representation of resource system, with the intent to impose as little terminology as possible on the students.

Nursing students' transfer of learning outcomes from simulation-based training to clinical practice: A focus-group study
2019
AbstractBackgroundSimulation-based training is used to develop nursing students’ clinical performance in assessing and managing situations in clinical placements. The use of simulation-based training has increased and become an integrated part of nursing education. The aim of this study was to explore nursing students’ experiences of simulation-based training and how the students perceived the transfer of learning to clinical practice.MethodsEight focus group interviews were conducted with a total of 32 s- and third-year nursing students who participated in a simulation-based training organized as preparation for clinical placement. The transcribed interviews were analysed with thematic ana…
Internet abuse by university students: a neglected theme in Africa
2013
The purpose of this paper is to investigate potential Internet abuse by university students, an area lacking research focus in Africa. A case study was conducted at the University of The Gambia (UTG) in 2012. A total of 200 questionnaires were randomly administered to UTG students and 181 valid responses were available for analyses. The result indicates that about 18% of UTG students use the Internet for unspecified activities, demonstrating attributes that could reveal potential Internet abuse. Considering the negative implications of this phenomenon, African researchers cannot afford to neglect this theme. peerReviewed
The link between violence and suicidal behavior among female university students in Spain
2019
Objective: To explore the association between violence and suicidal behavior in female university students. Method: A convenience sample of 540 female students enrolled in the Nursing and Teacher Training Faculties at the University of Valencia was selected. Violence by partners, nonpartners, and both was compared with suicidal thoughts and suicide attempts. An adjusted logistic regression and the Wald Test were performed to explore whether the effect on student's suicidal behavior differed if a partner or others committed violence. Results: 18.1% reported suicidal thoughts in the last month and 2.4% had attempted suicide in the past five years. Suicidal behavior was significantly higher in…
