Major gender difference in association of FTO gene variant among severely obese children with obesity and obesity related phenotypes.

Recent studies have shown that SNPs in the FTO gene predispose to childhood and adult obesity. In this study, we examined the association between variants in FTO and KIAA1005, a gene that maps closely to FTO, and obesity, as well as obesity related traits among 450 well characterised severely obese children and 512 normal weight controls. FTO showed significant association with several obesity related traits while SNPs in KIAA1005 did not. When stratified by gender, the FTO variant rs9939609 showed association with obesity and BMI among girls (P = 0.006 and 0.004, respectively) but not among boys. Geometry of Quadrangles in Almqvist’s The Queen’s Tiara

Quadrangles are repeatedly used in construction of scenes in Swedish author C. J. L. Almqvist’s novel The Queen’s Tiara. They limit and frame views. Repeating these structures creates connections between scenes. They form in relations between characters. Several quadrangular structures form around one main character called Tintomara, when she involuntarily attracts characters that fall in love in her. Also, quadrangles inside and beside each other are visible in scenes. Almqvist presented these forms in the elementary geometry textbook he published a year before this novel. peerReviewed

The reproductive biology of the European badger (Meles meles) is of wide interest because it is one of the few mammal species that show delayed implantation and one of only five which are suggested to show superfetation as a reproductive strategy. This study aimed to describe the reproductive biology of female Irish badgers with a view to increasing our understanding of the process of delayed implantation and superfetation. Despite their key role in biogeochemical processes, particularly the methane cycle, archaea are widely underrepresented in molecular surveys because of their lower abundance compared to bacteria and eukaryotes. Here, we use parallel high‐resolution small subunit rRNA gene sequencing to explore archaeal diversity in 109 Swedish lakes and correlate archaeal community assembly mechanisms to large‐scale latitudinal, climatic (nemoral to arctic), and nutrient (oligotrophic to eutrophic) gradients. A survey of seroprevalence of human papillomavirus types 16, 18 and 33 among children.

The importance and natural history of HPV infections in childhood is incompletely understood. We performed a survey for presence of serum antibodies to HPV capsids among 1031 children aged 0 to 13 years, resident in Stockholm, Sweden. The HPV seroprevalence among these children was 3.0% for HPV16, 0.6% for HPV18 and 2.7% for HPV33. By comparison, among simultaneously analyzed positive control panels comprising women with CIN or healthy women with type-specific cervical HPV DNA, seroprevalence of HPV 16, 18 and 33 was 69%, 58% and 63% respectively. The results suggest that HPV infection in childhood is not common.
Remembering a past princess : Catherine Jagiellon and the construction of national narratives in Sweden and Finland

This chapter tackles the role a Jagiellonian princess, Catherine Jagiellon, has been given in Swedish and Finnish history culture. It illustrates how her figure has entered the historical-cultural memory of both countries, forging and re-forging their national self-image from the end of the sixteenth century through the Cold War, and into contemporary school history teaching. The chapter highlights the differences as well as the similarities of collective memory and history culture associated with Catherine Jagiellon in two Nordic countries with a shared history.
