The defendant’s guilt beyond a reasonable doubt in the Italian criminal justice system

2021

The criminal law standard of Beyond A Reasonable Doubt (BARD) constitutes an evidentiary and judicial rule, formulated and applied for centuries in common law jurisdictions, which was expressly stated in the Italian Code of Criminal Procedure only about fifteen years ago. Unfortunately, the concept of reasonable doubt is inherently complex and does not easily lend itself to definition or refinement. In this regard, the Author examines especially the various positions and elaborations developed by legal literature and case-law in Italy, proposing a specific interpretation of the BARD rule that enhances and completes the particular procedural connotations of the adversarial system adopted i…

Making sense of domestic violence intervention in professional health care

2011

Intervening in domestic violence in the health care and social service settings is a complex and contested issue. In this qualitative, multidisciplinary study, the barriers to but also the possibilities for health care professionals in encountering victims of violence were scrutinised. The focus was on omissions in service structure and practices. The data consisted of six focus group interviews with nurses, physicians, social workers and psychologists in specialist health care (n = 30) conducted in Finland in 2009. The aim was to explore professionals' processes of making sense of violence interventions and the organisational practices of violence interventions. Four types of framing of th…

Finnish Military Officer Identities and Micro-Political Resistance

2021

Drawing on the concept of micro-political resistance, this article presents an empirical analysis of how officers of the Finnish Defence Forces challenge, resist, and reinforce the collective military identities constructed within the prevailing organizational discourses. There is a need for identity work to meet the norms and ideals of the military, but individuals can also work as change agents. Micro-political resistance derives from feelings of otherness as well as conflict between the dominant organizational identities and individuals’ personal interests. This study presents a thematic discourse analysis based on texts written by 108 officers and 12 interviews on the theme of “the ide…

A phase IB, multicenter, open-label study to assess the safety, tolerability, and efficacy of the pleiotropic pathway modifier CC122 administered ora…

2017

379 Background: CC122 is a novel cereblon-modulating agent with multiple biologic activities including potent immunomodulatory and antiangiogenic effects. CC-122 binding to cereblon promotes ubiquitination and subsequent degradation of lymphoid transcription factors Ikaros and Aiolos resulting in activation of T cells. Methods: Following establishment of oral CC122 3 mg daily (QD) as the MTD in phase 1a (Blood 122:2905 2013), an expansion cohort of advanced Hepatocellular Carcinoma (HCC) subjects was enrolled. All subjects had progressed on or were intolerant to sorafenib. Efficacy was assessed per RECIST 1.1 criteria. Results: As of Jan. 13, 2016, 25 advanced HCC subjects were enrolled. T…

Utilisation of barium-modified analcime in sulphate removal: Isotherms, kinetics and thermodynamics studies

2017

Abstract Analcime and commercial zeolite were employed as a precursor for preparing sorbent material for SO42− removal over barium modification. Three sorbents were prepared: barium-modified analcime (ANA-Na-Ba), barium-modified acid-washed analcime (ANA-Ac-Na-Ba) and barium-modified zeolite (ZSM5-Na-Ba). Of the prepared materials, ANA-Ac-Na-Ba was the most efficient sorbent material for SO42− removal, with a maximum sorption uptake of 13.7 mg g−1 at room temperature. Batch sorption experiments were performed to evaluate the effect of initial pH, initial SO42− concentration, sorbent dosage, temperature and contact time of sorption. Several isotherms were applied to describe the experimental…

Sound and reusable components for abstract interpretation

2019

Abstract interpretation is a methodology for defining sound static analysis. Yet, building sound static analyses for modern programming languages is difficult, because these static analyses need to combine sophisticated abstractions for values, environments, stores, etc. However, static analyses often tightly couple these abstractions in the implementation, which not only complicates the implementation, but also makes it hard to decide which parts of the analyses can be proven sound independently from each other. Furthermore, this coupling makes it hard to combine soundness lemmas for parts of the analysis to a soundness proof of the complete analysis. To solve this problem, we propose to c…

Italian pediatric respiratory society recommendations on pediatric pulmonary function testing during COVID-19 pandemic

2020

The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is a public health emergency of international concern caused by a newly discovered coronavirus (severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2, SARS-CoV-2). Person-toperson transmission of SARS-CoV-2 occurs primarily through close contact with an infected person, mainly occurring via respiratory droplets and after touching contaminated objects. Accordingly, pulmonary function testing (PFT) could be considered at high-risk for viral transmission due to the potential for coughing and droplet formation during PFT procedures. The most likely surfaces for possible contamination by this route are mouthpieces, proximal valves, and tubing. Also, both technic…

Safety assessment of food-contact paper and board using a battery of short-term toxicity tests: European union BIOSAFEPAPER project.

2005

International audience; An European Union (EU)-funded project QLK1-CT-2001-00930 (BIOSAFEPAPER) involves the development, validation and intercalibration of a short-term battery of toxicological tests for the safety assessment of food-contact paper and board. Dissemination of the results to industry, legislators (e.g. DG Consumer Protection, DG Enterprises, DG Research), standardization bodies such as CEN, and consumers will create an agreed risk evaluation procedure. The project involves pre-normative research in order to establish a set of in-vitro cytotoxicity and genotoxicity tests that will be easily adaptable to food-contact fibre-based materials and have endpoints relevant to consume…
