Smart materials for sample preparation in bioanalysis: A green overview

2021

Abstract The analysis of biological samples is a complex challenge due to the complexity of the matrix, but also to the low concentration of target analytes that must be determined. Consequently, different sample treatment procedures have been proposed in bioanalysis to clean-up and enrich sample extracts, paying special attention to microextraction approaches. In this frame, the combined use of microextraction approaches with smart materials provides environmentally friendly sample treatment strategies with improved selectivity, sensitivity, and reusability. Applications of smart solid materials includes antibody–antigen interaction based materials, aptamers, molecularly imprinted polymers…

Combination of supported liquid membrane and solid-phase extraction for sample pretreatment of triazine herbicides in juice prior to capillary electr…

2002

A possibility of a combination of supported liquid membrane (SLM) and solid-phase extraction (SPE) for the determination of atrazine at microgram level in different type of fruit juices is presented. In comparison to SPE extraction from juice samples, the application of SLM-SPE enrichment provides much cleaner extracts and the possibility of lowering the limit of detection as low as 30 microg/l. However, it was also shown that by appropriate manipulation of SLM extraction conditions mainly flow-rate of donor phase and volume ratio between donor and acceptor phase, the level of detection can be further decreased to 10 microg/l. The results suggest that the application of SLM extraction prior…

Molecularly Imprinted Polymers as Useful Sorbents for Bioanalysis

2022

The determination of various active compounds in different types of biological samples attracts recently considerable attention. Unfortunately, the complexity of such sample matrices requires the application of multistage analytical procedures, which by many analysts is considered the most critical step in the whole analytical process. Sample preparation techniques dedicated to bioanalysis must ensure effective isolation and enrichment of various, often trace, amounts of analytes. Furthermore, the high selectivity of extraction of the target analytes, in relation to other interfering substances co-presented in the sample, is important in this case. Therefore, over the last two decades, the …

Optimal Control of the Controlled Lotka-Volterra Equations with Applications - The Permanent Case

2022

In this article motivated by the control of complex microbiota in view to reduce the infection by a pathogenic agent, we introduce the theoretical frame from optimal control to analyze the problem. Two complementary approaches can be applied in the analysis: one is the so-called permanent case, where no digital constraints are concerning the control (taken as a measurable mapping) versus the sampled-data control case taking into account the logistic constraints, e.g. frequency of the medical interventions. The model is the n-dimensional Lotka-Volterra equation controlled using either probiotics or antibiotic agents or transplantation and bactericides. In the permanent case the Maximum princ…

Analytical strategies for organic food packaging contaminants

2016

In this review, we present current approaches in the analysis of food-packaging contaminants. Gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection have been widely used in the analysis of some relevant families of these compounds such as primary aromatic amines, bisphenol A, bisphenol A diglycidyl ether and related compounds, UV-ink photoinitiators, perfluorinated compounds, phthalates and non-intentionally added substances. Main applications for sample treatment and different types of food-contact material migration studies have been also discussed. Pressurized Liquid Extraction, Solid-Phase Microextraction, Focused Ultrasound Solid-Liquid Extraction and Quechers have been …

Functionally active complement proteins C6 and C7 detected in C6- and C7-deficient individuals

1991

SUMMARYTwo sensitive sandwich ELISAs based on monoclonal antibodies directed to native C6 and C7 allowed the detection and quantitation of these complement proteins in 20 out of 37 serum samples from individuals who had previously been classified as deficient in these proteins as assessed by immunochemical and/or functional assays. Furthermore, serum from four C6-deficient and one combined C6-/C7-deficient individual showed an increase in the terminal complement complex (TCC) and a decrease in native C6 and C7 after complement activation as assayed by specific ELISAs. Despite their (incomplete) deficiencies, these individuals therefore possess functionally active terminal complement protein…

Body Image Perception in Mexican University Athletes VS Non-Athletes

2014

The objective of this study consisted in determining the differences and similarities among Mexican University students who practice a sport on a regular basis with those who do not do, concerning their body image perception to their actual, ideal, social and body size dissatisfaction. A total sample of 304 male University students, aged 18-29 years participated in this study; 146 of them practice a sport and participate regularly in a tournament or competition. A quantitative approach with a descriptive and transversal survey design was used. All the participants completed the Contour Drawing Rating Scale adapted and computerized by [1]. The results of the one-way multivariate analysis of …

The influence of non-verbal body language on sport performance in professional tennis

2019

The main objective of this study was to analyse the relationship between players´ non-verbal body language and their performance in sport. The sample consists of a total of 477 actions from 40 players competing in the ATP Tour. All actions were taken from tie-breaks in official tournaments. The categories that were analyzed were previous performance, dominant non-verbal body language, submissive non-verbal body language, and performance later on. Results show how the players´ non verbal body language impacts on their performance later on.  Thus, we can conclude that following dominant non-verbal body language, the probabilities of better performance in the next point are greater than follow…

Determination of the technetium-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine plasma clearance in children by means of a single blood sample: a multicentre study

1993

A multicentre European study was undertaken in order to determine a reasonable algorithm allowing the determination of overall technetium-99m mercaptoacetyltriglycine clearance using a single blood sample. Employing multiple blood sample clearance as a reference method, it was shown that an acceptable estimation of the MAG3 renal clearance could be obtained using a blood sample taken at any time between 30 and 40 min after tracer injection. After correction for body surface area, comparison of clearance determined using (a) the single blood sample and (b) the multiple blood samples provided a coefficient of correlation of 0.949 and an SEE of 27 ml/min. This algorithm is valid for clearance …
