A comparison of marketing teaching methods in North American and European universities

PurposeTo compare marketing education methods in Europe and North America, and analyse the opinions about effectiveness underpinning educators' choices among available options.Design/methodology/approachE‐mail questionnaires distributed to a sampling frame extracted from the worldwide directory of the Academy of Marketing Science were completed by 93 marketing academics in North America and 42 in Europe: a 26 per cent overall return rate. A tutorial introduction to the technique of Molecular Dynamics (MD) is given, and some characteristic examples of applications are described. The purpose and scope of these simulations and the relation to other simulation methods is discussed, and the basic MD algorithms are described. The sampling of intensive variables (temperature T, pressure p) in runs carried out in the microcanonical (NVE) ensemble (N= particle number, V = volume, E = energy) is discussed, as well as the realization of other ensembles (e.g. the NVT ensemble). A Design of Scintillator Tiles Read Out by Surface-Mounted SiPMs for a Future Hadron Calorimeter

Precision calorimetry using highly granular sampling calorimeters is being developed based on the particle flow concept within the CALICE collaboration. One design option of a hadron calorimeter is based on silicon photomultipliers (SiPMs) to detect photons generated in plastic scintillator tiles. Mapping Ash CaCO3, pH, and Extractable Elements Using Principal Component Analysis

Abstract Ash cover in fire-affected areas is an important factor in the reduction of soil erosion and increased availability of soil nutrients. Thus it is important to understand the spatial distribution of ash and its capacity for soil protection and to provide nutrients to the underlying soil. In this work, we aimed to map ash CaCO3, pH, and select extractable elements using a principal component analysis (PCA). Four days after a medium to severe wildfire, we established a grid in a 9 ×27 m area on a west facing slope and took ash samples every 3 m for a total of 40 sampling points. Using the simplified falling head technique to detect temporal changes in field-saturated hydraulic conductivity at the surface of a sandy loam soil

Abstract Determining temporal changes in field-saturated hydraulic conductivity ( K fs ) is important for understanding and modeling hydrological phenomena at the field scale. Little is known about temporal variability of K fs values measured at permanent sampling points. In this investigation, the simplified falling head (SFH) technique was used for an approximately 2-year period to determine temporal changes in K fs at 11 permanent sampling points established at the surface of a sandy loam soil. Depletion induced isotropic-isotropic phase separation in suspensions of rod-like colloids

When non-adsorbing polymers are added to an isotropic suspension of rod-like colloids, the colloids effectively attract each other via depletion forces. We performed Monte Carlo simulations to study the phase diagram of such rod-polymer mixture. The colloidal rods were modeled as hard spherocylinders; the polymers were described as spheres of the same diameter as the rods. The polymers may overlap with no energy cost, while the overlap of polymers and rods is forbidden. Large amounts of depletant cause phase separation of the mixture. A new strategy for effective learning in population Monte Carlo sampling

In this work, we focus on advancing the theory and practice of a class of Monte Carlo methods, population Monte Carlo (PMC) sampling, for dealing with inference problems with static parameters. We devise a new method for efficient adaptive learning from past samples and weights to construct improved proposal functions. It is based on assuming that, at each iteration, there is an intermediate target and that this target is gradually getting closer to the true one. Computer simulations show and confirm the improvement of the proposed strategy compared to the traditional PMC method on a simple considered scenario.

PAINT–SiCon: constructing consistent parametric representations of Pareto sets in nonconvex multiobjective optimization

We introduce a novel approximation method for multiobjective optimization problems called PAINT–SiCon. The method can construct consistent parametric representations of Pareto sets, especially for nonconvex problems, by interpolating between nondominated solutions of a given sampling both in the decision and objective space. The proposed method is especially advantageous in computationally expensive cases, since the parametric representation of the Pareto set can be used as an inexpensive surrogate for the original problem during the decision making process. peerReviewed
