The role of the Nature of Science in citizens' education

O presente trabalho tem como propósito dar uma nova contribuição para o debate que se vem desenvolvendo, já faz algum tempo, em volta do papel da natureza da ciência na educação científica e, em particular, na formação de uma cidadania para a participação na tomada de decisões. This paper aims to contribute to the debate on the role of the nature of science and technology in science education, paying particular attention to preparing citizens to participate in decision making.
Designed Examples as Mediating Tools: Introductory Algebra in Two Norwegian Grade 8 Classrooms

A critical element in the introduction of algebra is to focus student attention on the basic ideas of algebraic reasoning including the use of concepts such as variable and algebraic expression. In the Norwegian classrooms, representing a student-centered instructional philosophy, the teachers utilized examples and problems that they themselves had designed, and the examples involved resources such as concrete objects and body movements in order to make algebra accessible to students. When designing these examples, teachers thus used their own previous experiences of teaching algebra in an attempt to articulate the passage from arithmetic to algebra.
Solving word problems algebraically in a spreadsheet environment in a primary school

This paper presents some results from an investigation into the teaching of the algebraic solving of word problems in a spreadsheet environment in the sixth grade of primary school in Spain (11-12 year old pupils). The main aim of the study was to investigate whether the spreadsheet could be a mediator to the teaching of algebraic problem solving. Through the analysis of excerpts from a case study, the core of the paper is focused on two different types of the difficulties that students showed when solving problems algebraically in a spreadsheet environment.

Abstract Rotliegend siliciclastic formations are important reservoirs in central Europe. These sediments consist of pristine red coloured and bleached, high porous and permeable sandstones. To evaluate the relevance of distinct fluids and their fluid-rock alteration reactions on such bleaching processes laboratory static batch experiments under reservoir conditions were conducted. Thereby mineralogical, petrophysical and (hydro-, geo-) chemical rock features were investigated by different analytical methods before and after the experiments. Metallic foams have been recently introduced also as industrial materials due to their well known advantages. In fact, their low mass in conjunction with the good thermal and mechanical properties push toward an extensive diffusion in manufacturing industry. In the study here addressed, a very accurate investigation concerning the latter two aspects has been carried out. Dynamic 2- and 3-connectivity on planar graphs

We study the problem of maintaining the 2-edge-, 2-vertex-, and 3-edge-connected components of a dynamic planar graph subject to edge deletions. The 2-edge-connected components can be maintained in a total of O(n log n) time under any sequence of at most O(n) deletions. This gives O(log n) amortized time per deletion. The 2-vertex- and 3-edge-connected components can be maintained in a total of O(n log2n) time. This gives O(log2n) amortized time per deletion. The space required by all our data structures is O(n).
Anion Recognition by a Bioactive Diureidodecalin Anionophore: Solid-State, Solution, and Computational Studies

Recent work has identified a bis-(p-nitrophenyl)ureidodecalin anion carrier as a promising candidate for biomedical applications, showing good activity for chloride transport in cells yet almost no cytotoxicity. To underpin further development of this and related compounds, a detailed structural and binding investigation is reported. Crystal structures of the transporter as five solvates confirm the diaxial positioning of urea groups while revealing a degree of conformational flexibility. Student academic underachievement is a concern of paramount importance in Europe, where around 15% of the students in the last high school courses do not achieve the minimum knowledge academic requirement. In this paper, we propose a model based on a system of differential equations to study the dynamics of the students academic performance in the German region of North Rhine-Westphalia. This approach is supported by the idea that both, good and bad study habits, are a mixture of personal decisions and influence of classmates. This model allows us to forecast the student academic performance by means of confidence intervals over the next few years.
