Outcomes of uvulopalatopharyngoplasty with harmonic scalpel after failure of continuous positive airway pressure in sleep apnea syndrome.

2012

Our data highlight that uvulopalatopharyngoplasty (UPPP) with harmonic scalpel (HS) is a reliable treatment in selected patients affected by obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) and users of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP).The aim of this paper was to verify the efficacy and applicability of UPPP with HS in the treatment of patients affected by OSA and users of CPAP.A total of 21 patients with a retropalatal obstruction and users of CPAP underwent UPPP with HS and were evaluated (before and 6 months after surgery) using the apnea/hypopnea index (AHI); oxygen desaturation index ≥4% (ODI(4)); Epworth Sleepiness Scale (ESS); snoring level (SL); subjective assessment of the postoperative pa…

Influence of Training Models at 3,900-m Altitude on the Physiological Response and Performance of a Professional Wheelchair Athlete: A Case Study.

2019

Sanz-Quinto, S, Lopez-Grueso, R, Brizuela, G, Flatt, AA, and Moya-Ramon, M. Influence of training models at 3,900-m altitude on the physiological response and performance of a professional wheelchair athlete: A case study. J Strength Cond Res 33(6): 1715-1723, 2019-This case study compared the effects of two training camps using flexible planning (FP) vs. inflexible planning (IP) at 3,860-m altitude on physiological and performance responses of an elite marathon wheelchair athlete with Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease (CMT). During IP, the athlete completed preplanned training sessions. During FP, training was adjusted based on vagally mediated heart rate variability (HRV) with specific sessions…

Multimodal Device for Real-Time Monitoring of Skin Oxygen Saturation and Microcirculation Function

2019

The present study introduces a recently developed compact hybrid device for real-time monitoring of skin oxygen saturation and temperature distribution. The prototype involves a snapshot hyperspectral camera, multi-wavelength illuminator, thermal camera, and built-in computer with custom-developed software. To validate this device in-vivo we performed upper arm vascular occlusion on eight healthy volunteers. Palm skin oxygen saturation maps were analyzed in real-time using k-means segmentation algorithm and two-layer optical diffuse model. The prototype system demonstrated a satisfying performance of skin hyperspectral measurements in the spectral range of 507&ndash

Difference in body weight between American and Italian women with polycystic ovary syndrome: influence of the diet.

2003

BACKGROUND The study aim was to determine differences in body mass in two populations of women (USA and Italy) with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS), and to assess the effect of diet on body mass and cardiovascular risk factors. METHODS Pools of women with PCOS from the USA (n = 343) and Italy (n = 301), seen between 1993 and 2001, were available for assessment. From these populations, 20 women who were seen consecutively in 2001 at each site had detailed analyses of diet and cardiovascular risk factors. RESULTS In the entire group, American women had a significantly higher body mass compared with Italian women (P < 0.01). Also, the 20 women consecutively evaluated in the USA had a signific…

Dietary Fats and Cardio-Metabolic Outcomes in a Cohort of Italian Adults

2022

Background: Dietary fats, and especially saturated fatty acid (SFA), have been blamed for being the culprit in the dramatic increase in obesity and its associated diseases. However multiple systematic reviews and recent meta-analyses do not support the association between SFA and cardiovascular diseases. Thus, the objective of this study was to test whether specific types and subtypes of dietary fats are associated with metabolic outcomes in a cohort of Italian adults. Methods: Nutritional and demographic data of 1936 adults living in the south of Italy were examined. Food frequency questionnaires (FFQs) were administered to assess the intake of total dietary fat and each specific class of …

Nickel(II) Complex of a Hexadentate Ligand with Two o-Iminosemiquinonato(1-) π-Radical Units and Its Monocation and Dication.

2016

Aerobic reaction of a hexadentate redox-active o-aminophenol-based ligand, H4L(3) = N,N'-bis(2-hydroxy-3,5-di-tert-butylphenyl)-2,2'-diamino(diphenyldithio)-ethane, in CH3OH with Ni(II)(O2CCH3)2·4H2O and Et3N afforded isolation of a reddish-brown crystalline solid [Ni(L(3))] 1. Cyclic voltammetry (CV) experiment exhibits two oxidative responses at E1/2 = 0.09 and 0.53 V vs SCE (saturated calomel electrode). Chemical oxidation of 1 in air by [Fe(III)(η(5)-C5H5)2][PF6] and AgBF4 in CH2Cl2 led to the isolation of one-electron oxidized species [1](1+) as purple [1][PF6]·CH2Cl2 and two-electron oxidized species [1](2+) as dark purple [1][BF4]2·CH2Cl2, respectively. X-ray crystallographic analysi…

Age-related changes in linoleic acid bioconversion by isolated hepatocytes from spontaneously hypertensive and normotensive rats

1994

This study points out the hepatocyte interconversion of the linoleic acid family during hypertension. Hepatocyte delta 6 desaturase activity was higher in 1 month-old spontaneously hypertensive rats than in normotensive controls. A similar tendency was observed in 6 month-old SHR. delta 5 desaturase activity was higher only in 1 month-old spontaneously hypertensive rats as compared to controls. Desaturase activities were particularly high at the age of 6 months. The hepatocyte fatty acid composition showed an impairment of n-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid metabolism in spontaneously hypertensive animals. Changes were greater in the young prehypertensive rats than in adults. A storage of n-3 l…

Temperature dependent properties of environmentally important synthetic musks.

2002

Environmental fate determining physical properties including their temperature dependence for five nitro musks and for seven polycyclic musks were estimated. The properties evaluated were vapor pressure in a solid and liquid state (PS and PL), solubility in water (S), Henry's law coefficient (H = PL/S) and log octanol-water partition coefficient (log KOW). Gas chromatography for starting values of vapor pressure estimation and HPLC experiments at 5-20 degrees C for comparison of the theoretical versus experimental solubilities in water were performed. The values of temperature (T) dependence coefficients (Ai and Bi) in equations: log (Property)i = Ai - Bi/T were determined. Values of proper…

LED-bed therapy of cardiovascular disorders: a volunteer study

2020

Studies of the physiological response of human half-body illumination by a specially designed bed comprising large number of LEDs emitting in the red and near infrared spectral range were carried out in a group of 32 volunteers comprising healthy subjects and hypertension patients. Blood pressure, heart rate and arterial blood oxygen saturation, as well as the bed surface temperature were continuously monitored during the measurement sessions with and without aluminum foil cover on the bed surface. None of the volunteers exhibited any notable changes in the heart rate and blood oxygenation during the procedures. The LightStim LED-bed session did not produce changes of arterial pressure in n…
