Solution of time-independent Schrödinger equation by the imaginary time propagation method

2007

Numerical solution of eigenvalues and eigenvectors of large matrices originating from discretization of linear and non-linear Schrodinger equations using the imaginary time propagation (ITP) method is described. Convergence properties and accuracy of 2nd and 4th order operator-splitting methods for the ITP method are studied using numerical examples. The natural convergence of the method is further accelerated with a new dynamic time step adjustment method. The results show that the ITP method has better scaling with respect to matrix size as compared to the implicitly restarted Lanczos method. An efficient parallel implementation of the ITP method for shared memory computers is also demons…

A scaling-up strategy supporting the expansion of integrated care: a study protocol

2019

Purpose To ensure that more people will benefit from integrated care initiatives, scaling-up of successful initiatives is the way forward. However, new challenges present themselves as knowledge on how to achieve successful large-scale implementation is scarce. The EU-funded project SCIROCCO uses a step-based scaling-up strategy to explore what to scale-up, and how to scale-up integrated care initiatives by matching the complementary strengths and weaknesses of five European regions involved in integrated care. The purpose of this paper is to describe a multi-method evaluation protocol designed to understand what factors influence the implementation of the SCIROCCO strategy to support the …

Spreading dynamics of three-dimensional droplets by the lattice-Boltzmann method

2000

Abstract We have simulated spreading of small droplets on smooth and rough solid surfaces using the three-dimensional lattice-Boltzmann method. We present results for the influence of the initial distance and shape of the drop from the surface on scaling of droplet radius R as a function of time. For relatively flat initial drop shapes our observations are consistent with Tanner's law R ∼ t q , where q =1/10. For increasingly spherical initial shapes, the exponent q increases rapidly being above one half for spherical droplets initially just above the surface. As expected, surface roughness slows down spreading, decreases the final drop radius, and results in irregular droplet shape due to …

Multidimensional scaling and stock location assignment in a warehouse: an application

1999

By means of an application, in the present paper, the suitability of a multivariate statistical methodology, as multidimensional scaling (MDS), to solve an optimization problem is shown. In particular, considering the stock location assignment problem in the warehouse of a supermarket chain, the solution gained by applying MDS to a set of seven variables is compared with the one obtainable by considering the usual techniques applied in this context. A wide discussion of results is reported. Copyright © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

Psychometric properties of the interaction on supervised classes scale (ISCS)

2016

Periodontal therapy for patients before and after radiotherapy : a review of the literature and topics of interest for clinicians

2018

Background To review and discuss important topics regarding periodontal treatment pre- and post-radiotherapy for head and neck cancer in human patients; to discuss the references for adequate techniques, the appropriate moment for tooth extractions and periodontal management; and to discuss the prevention of osteoradionecrosis. Material and Methods Thirty-nine studies including original studies, randomized clinical trials (RCTs) and reviews were searched in online databases MEDLINE (PubMed) and the Cochrane library. No year of publication restriction was applied. Results Language was restricted to English, and the following Medical Subject Heading terms were used: radiotherapy, radiation th…

Computer simulations of critical phenomena and phase behaviour of fluids

2010

Computer simulation techniques such as Monte Carlo (MC) and Molecular Dynamics (MD) methods yield numerically exact information (apart from statistical errors) on model systems of classical statistical mechanics. However, a systematic limitation is the restriction to a finite (and often rather small) particle number N (or box linear dimension L, respectively). This limitation is particularly restrictive near critical points (due to the divergence of the correlation length of the order parameter) and for the study of phase equilibria (possibly involving interfaces, droplets, etc.). Starting out with simple lattice gas (Ising) models, finite size scaling analyses have been developed to overco…

New Results on Charm Production at HERA

2014

The copious production of charm quarks at HERA yielded measure- ments of the charm contribution to the proton structure and of the charm mass and fragmentation parameters of charmed hadrons. Several measure- ments of charm production in deep inelastic scattering from the H1 and ZEUS collaborations as well as combined data are presented. They provide a powerful vindication of the form of the gluon density in the proton de- rived from scaling violations of inclusive deep inelastic scattering data. A QCD fit to the charm data leads to a measurement of the charm mass and provides precise predictions e.g. for W and Z production at the LHC. In ad- dition, charm fragmentation fractions in photopro…

Scaling properties of inclusive W $$^\pm $$ ± production at hadron colliders

2016

We consider the hadroproduction of W gauge bosons in their leptonic decay mode. Starting from the leading-order expressions, we show that by defining a suitable scaling variable the centre-of-mass dependence of the cross sections at the LHC energies can be essentially described by a simple power law. The scaling exponent is directly linked to the small-$x$ behaviour of parton distribution functions (PDF) which, at the high virtualities involved in W production, is largely dictated by QCD evolution equations. This entails a particularly simple scaling law for the lepton charge asymmetry and also predicts that measurements in different collision systems (p-p, p-$\bar{\rm p}$, p-Pb Pb-Pb) are …
