Development and viability of biofilms grown on experimental abutments mimicking dental implants: an in vivo model

2019

Background To determine whether an experimental abutment mimicking the macro- and microstructure of a dental implant is a suitable method for recovering biofilm, and to describe the features of biofilms formed around such abutments on healthy implants. Material and Methods Experimental abutments were used in 15 patients without peri-implant diseases. After 14 days’ absence of dental hygiene in this area, the abutments were retrieved and analyzed through confocal laser scanning microscopy and scanning electron microscopy. The biofilm formation on the surface of the first 5 abutments was determined by a fluorescence-staining method using SYTO9 nucleic acid stain. In order to study the biofilm…

In situ and postradiation analysis of mechanical stress in Al2O3:Cr induced by swift heavy-ion irradiation

2010

Abstract Optical spectroscopy and TEM techniques have been applied to study the radiation damage and correlated mechanical stresses in Al2O3 and Al2O3:Cr single crystals induced by (1–3) MeV/amu Kr, Xe and Bi ion irradiation. Mechanical stresses were evaluated in situ using a piezospectroscopic effect through the shift of the respective lines in ionoluminescence spectra. It was found that dose dependence of the stress level for Xe and Bi ions, when ionization energy loss exceeds the threshold of damage formation via electronic excitations, exhibits several alternate stages showing the build-up and relaxation of stresses. The beginning of relaxation stages is observed at fluences associated …

Impact on flavour release of the structure of composite gels containing polysaccharides: Example of the fruit préparations

2006

The main objective of this study was to understand the respective rôle of the structure of a food product and of the physicochemical interactions on flavour release. For that purpose, fruit préparations hâve been chosen as model matrices. Those matrices contain a polysaccharide as gelling agent, a cross-linked waxy corn starch (1.4%), a high sucrose content (35%), an acidic buffer and a strawberry aroma (17 molécules). Four matrices were developed by modifying either the composition or the concentration in gelling agent: two matrices of similar texture containing either LM pectin or carrageenan, and two carrageenan based matrices with différent gelled structures. In a first step; two comple…

S100α and S100β proteins in human cutaneous sensory corpuscles: Effects of nerve and spinal cord injury

1998

S100 protein in the vertebrate peripheral nervous system consists of homo- or heterodimers of S100α and S100β proteins, the first predominating in neurons and the second in glial cells. Recently, however, occurrence of S100β protein in neurons has been reported. The expression of S100 protein by Schwann cells, as well as their derivatives in sensory corpuscles, depends on the sensory axon (i.e., the Schwann cell–axon contact). The present study analyzed the distribution of S100α and S100β proteins in human cutaneous sensory corpuscles and the effects of peripheral or central sensory axon severance in the expression of these proteins. Simple or double immunohistochemistry was carried out usi…

Three-dimensional superresolution by annular binary filters

1999

We present a new family of annular binary filters for improving the three-dimensional resolving power of optical systems. The filters, whose most important feature is their simplicity, permit to achieve a significant reduction, both in the transverse and in the axial direction, of the central lobe width of the irradiance point spread function of the system. The filters can be used for applications such as optical data storage or confocal scanning microscopy.

Piezospectroscopic study of mechanical stress in Al2O3:Cr under swift heavy ion irradiation

2009

Abstract The spatial distribution of mechanical stresses in Al2O3:Cr single crystal irradiated with (1 ÷ 3) MeV/amu Kr, Xe and Bi ions has been studied by using laser confocal scanning microscopy technique. The stress level as a function of the ion penetration depth has been evaluated from depth-resolved photostimulated R-line luminescence spectra exploiting the piezospectroscopic method. As it was found, the stress field generated by swift heavy ion irradiation is composed of stresses with maximal magnitude comparable with the ultimate stress limit of ruby crystals. Experimental data are discussed in the framework of a model considering the Cr3+ atoms as individual piezosensors.

Cariostatic effect of a light-cured, resin-reinforced glass-ionomer for bonding orthodontic brackets in vivo

1998

The aim of this study was to evaluate in vivo the cariostatic potential of the resin-reinforced glass-ionomer (Vitremer core build-up restorative; 3M Dental Product Division) when used as a bonding agent for orthodontic brackets. The mineral distribution and topography of the enamel surface adjacent to the bracket base was determined by quantitative microradiography (TMR) and confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM). The study was designed in split-mouth technique using 9 pairs of premolars to be extracted for orthodontic reasons. One tooth of each pair was bonded with the resin-reinforced glass-ionomer, and the control contralateral premolar with the non-fluoridated composite (Concise, 3M…

Cavitation corrosion and repassivation kinetics of titanium in a heavy brine LiBr solution evaluated by using electrochemical techniques and Confocal…

2011

The cavitation corrosion behaviour of commercially pure Grade 2 titanium in a 992 g/l LiBr solution has been investigated at 25 °C using an ultrasound device. Cavitation was found to have more influence on the anodic branch than on the cathodic branch, shifting the corrosion potential, Ecorr, and the OCP value towards more negative potentials, and increasing the corrosion current density, icorr, by six times. The repassivation kinetics of Grade 2 titanium have also been studied in the 992 g/l LiBr solution, at 25 °C and various applied potentials, using cavitation to damage the electrode surface. The repassivation kinetics have been analysed in terms of the current density flowing from the …
