On new means with interesting practical applications: Generalized power means

2021

Means of positive numbers appear in many applications and have been a traditional matter of study. In this work, we focus on defining a new mean of two positive values with some properties which are essential in applications, ranging from subdivision and multiresolution schemes to the numerical solution of conservation laws. In particular, three main properties are crucial—in essence, the ideas of these properties are roughly the following: to stay close to the minimum of the two values when the two arguments are far away from each other, to be quite similar to the arithmetic mean of the two values when they are similar and to satisfy a Lipchitz condition. We present new means with these pr…

NC-AFM contrast formation on the calcite ($10\bar {1}4$) surface

2012

Calcite, the most stable polymorph of calcium carbonate, is one of the most abundant simple salts in the geological environment. Consequently, its natural  cleavage plane has been studied extensively by a wide range of surface-sensitive techniques, giving indications for two reconstructions, namely a (2 × 1) and a so-called ‘row-pairing’ reconstruction. The existence of the (2 × 1) reconstruction has been discussed controversially in the literature, but is now confirmed as a true surface property. In contrast, a comprehensive discussion on the existence of the row-pairing reconstruction is lacking so far. Here, we present a non-contact atomic force microscopy (NC-AFM) study of the  calcite s…

A numerical simulation scheme for the albedo of city street canyons

1985

A numerical scheme is described for the calculation of effective albedo values of long city street canyons. The method is based on a generalization of the radiation model for inclined surfaces recently presented by Bruhl and Zdunkowski (1983). Calculated albedo values are compared with Aida's (1982) experimentally determined results. It is found that experiment and theory are in reasonable and in some cases in excellent agreement. Additional results obtained by varying the geometry of the street canyon as well as the surface reflectivities are shown to demonstrate the versatility of the calculation scheme.

MULTIRESOLUTION ANALYSIS FOR IRREGULAR MESHES WITH APPEARANCE ATTRIBUTES

2004

We present a new multiresolution analysis framework based on the lifting scheme for irregular meshes with attributes. We introduce a surface prediction opera- tor to compute the detail coefficients for the geometry and the attributes of the model. Attribute analysis gives appearance information to complete the geomet- rical analysis of the model. We present an application to adaptive visualization and some experimental results to show the efficiency of our framework.

Multiresolution Analysis for Meshes with Appearance Attributes

2005

International audience; We present a new multiresolution analysis framework for irregular meshes with attributes based on the lifting scheme. We introduce a surface prediction operator to compute the detail coefficients for the geometry and the attributes of the model. Attribute analysis gives appearance information to complete the geometrical analysis of the model. A set of experimental results are given to show the efficiency of our framework. We present two applications to adaptive visual-ization and denoising.

Approximation von extremalflächenstücken (hyperbolischen typs) durch charakteristische räumliche vierecke

1982

We consider solutions z of the Cauchy-problem for hyperbolic Euler-Lagrange equations derived from a general Lagrangian f(x, y, z; zx, zy) in two independent variables x, y. z is supposed to be an extremal of the corresponding variational problem. Visualizing z as a surface in R3 we give a geometric interpretation of Lewy's well-known characteristic approximation scheme for the numerical solution of second order hyperbolic equations by approximating z via a polyhedral construction built up from subunits which consist of two characteristic triangles having one side in common but lying on different planes in R3. Utilizing ideas from Cartan-geometry one can (in an appropriate sense) introduce …

Sustainable European fishery and the Friend of the Sea scheme: tools to achieve sustainable development in the fishery sector

2015

This paper investigates the role of the Friend of the Sea (FOS) scheme as a market tool for sustainable competitive advantage. To capture this effect, we apply a theoretical framework based on the stakeholder theory (SHT) and the natural-resource-based view (NRBV) to two case studies each in Italy and Spain. Our model allows us to explain the main factors determining an effective and competitive sustainable business model in the fishery sector. The results confirm the relevant influence of market forces in acquiring FOS certification and the role of the same as a counterpart to state authority.

Discontinuous Galerkin semi-Lagrangian method for Vlasov-Poisson

2011

We present a discontinuous Galerkin scheme for the numerical approximation of the one-dimensional periodic Vlasov-Poisson equation. The scheme is based on a Galerkin-characteristics method in which the distribution function is projected onto a space of discontinuous functions. We present comparisons with a semi-Lagrangian method to emphasize the good behavior of this scheme when applied to Vlasov-Poisson test cases.

Quantifying the Potential Economic Benefits of Flexible Industrial Demand in the European Power System

2018

The envisaged decarbonization of the European power system introduces complex techno-economic challenges to its operation and development. Demand flexibility can significantly contribute in addressing these challenges and enable a cost-effective transition to the low-carbon future. Although extensive previous work has analyzed the impacts of residential and commercial demand flexibility, the respective potential of the industrial sector has not yet been thoroughly investigated despite its large size. This paper presents a novel, whole-system modeling framework to comprehensively quantify the potential economic benefits of flexible industrial demand (FID) for the European power system. This …

On the use of neighbourhood-based non-parametric classifiers

1997

Alternative non-parametric classification schemes, which come from the use of different definitions of neighbourhood, are introduced. In particular, the Nearest Centroid Neighbourhood along with the neighbourhood relation derived from the Gabriel Graph and the Relative Neighbourhood Graph are used to define the corresponding (k-)Nearest Neighbour-like classifiers. Experimental results are reported to compare the performance of the approaches proposed here to the one obtained with the k-Nearest Neighbours rule.
