A new child-centered approach to the organization of extra-curricular activities in Finnish schools

Extracurricular activities are currently included in Finnish school legislation, but their organization is fragmented. History: Club activities at school led by teachers have been arranged since 1947 on extra pay, but their amount and content have depended on available funding and often on teachers’ willingness to lead club activities. Schools have also had a possibility to use cultural or sport operators. However, system has preferred teacher-led club activities. Tässä pro gradu -tutkielmassa tutkittiin opiskelijan huomion kohdetta lukion fysiikan tunnilla. Tutkimuksessa selvitettiin, vastaako opiskelijan visuaalinen huomio opettajan antamia vihjeitä, kun opettaja opettaa luokassa yhteisesti simulaation avulla. Aineiston kerääminen toteutettiin Tobii Pro Glasses 2 -katseenseurantalaseilla ja SRI-haastattelun avulla ja datan analysointiin käytettiin Microsoft Excel -ohjelmistoa. Luotettavuuden arviointiin käytettiin vertauskoodausta. Tutkimustuloksena oli, että opiskelija seuraa opettajan antamia vihjeitä suurimman osan simulaatio-opetuksen ajasta. Artykuł podejmuje kwestię obecności zasady fair play w środowisku szkolnym. Tworzone na potrzeby oddziaływań wychowawczych szkolne kodeksy etyki i fair play są potwierdzeniem wykorzystywania tej zasady w procesie dydaktycznym we współczesnej szkole. Szkolne kodeksy fair play zawierają treści nie tylko związane z lekcją wychowania fizycznego, lecz również koncentrują się na życiu, etyce i wpływają na kształtowanie konkretnych postaw w życiu. Niniejszy tekst wychodzi od etymologii pojęcia fair play, a następnie ukazuje jego związek z etyką, życiem, edukacją i kibicowaniem. W założeniu tekst wpisuje się w obecność fair play w sporcie, edukacji i życiu.

The Role of Individual- and Macro-Level Social Determinants on Young Adolescents’ Psychosomatic Complaints

This study examines the social determinants of psychosomatic complaints in young adolescents. Using data from the Health Behaviour in School-aged Children (HBSC) study, psychosomatic complaints are studied in 98,773 adolescents (11- and 13-year-olds; 48% 11-year-olds, 52% 13-year-olds; 52% females, 48% males) from 34 European countries. Individual-level determinants, including family-, peer- and school-related factors as well as country-level determinants (Human Development Index [HDI]) are considered. The main objectives of this study were: to compare the barriers to active commuting to and from school (ACS) between children and their parents separately for children and adolescents; and to analyze the association between ACS and the children’s and parents’ barriers. A total of 401 child–parent pairs, from Granada, Jaén, Toledo and Valencia, self-reported, separately, their mode of commuting to school and work, respectively, and the children’s barriers to ACS. Students with Attention Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) are a growing group served under special education services in many western societies. This article describes the history and current state of the services, as well as the assessment procedure. Our conclusion is that the status of students with ADHD in Finnish basic education (Grades 1 to 9) is still unclear. Based on the comparison of the prevalence and the population served in special education we can assume that this group is probably underserved in the Finnish school system.
