Coherent destruction of tunneling in a six-dimensional model of NHD2: a computational study using the multi-configuration time-dependent Hartree meth…

2014

We investigate the phenomenon of coherent destruction of tunneling in a six-dimensional model of the NHD2 molecule. Two regimes are considered for the frequency of the laser field. A non-resonant regime where the frequency of the laser field is high with respect to the ground vibrational state tunneling splitting but smaller than the transition frequencies between the ground and excited vibrational states; and a quasi-resonant regime where the frequency of the laser field is close to the transition frequency between the ground and first excited vibrational states. In each case, we study the laser driven dynamics in the framework of the Floquet formalism and derive simple analytical formulas…

Quantum dynamics by the constrained adiabatic trajectory method

2011

We develop the constrained adiabatic trajectory method (CATM) which allows one to solve the time-dependent Schr\"odinger equation constraining the dynamics to a single Floquet eigenstate, as if it were adiabatic. This constrained Floquet state (CFS) is determined from the Hamiltonian modified by an artificial time-dependent absorbing potential whose forms are derived according to the initial conditions. The main advantage of this technique for practical implementation is that the CFS is easy to determine even for large systems since its corresponding eigenvalue is well isolated from the others through its imaginary part. The properties and limitations of the CATM are explored through simple…

Breakdown of weak-turbulence and nonlinear wave condensation

2009

Abstract The formation of a large-scale coherent structure (a condensate) as a result of the long time evolution of the initial value problem of a classical partial differential nonlinear wave equation is considered. We consider the nonintegrable and unforced defocusing NonLinear Schrodinger (NLS) equation as a representative model. In spite of the formal reversibility of the NLS equation, the nonlinear wave exhibits an irreversible evolution towards a thermodynamic equilibrium state. The equilibrium state is characterized by a homogeneous solution (condensate), with small-scale fluctuations superposed (uncondensed particles), which store the information necessary for “time reversal”. We an…

Introductory Quantum Physics Courses using a LabVIEW multimedia module

2007

We present the development of a LabVIEW multimedia module for introductory Quantum Physics courses and our experience in the use of this application as an educational tool in learning methodologies. The program solves the Time Dependent Schrodinger Equation for arbitrary potentials. We describe the numerical method used for solving this equation, as well as some mathematical tools employed to reduce the calculation time and to obtain more accurate results. As an illustration, we present the evolution of a wave packet for three different potentials: the repulsive barrier potential, the repulsive step potential, and the harmonic oscillator. This application has been successfully integrated in…

Strong Instability of Ground States to a Fourth Order Schrödinger Equation

2019

Abstract In this note, we prove the instability by blow-up of the ground state solutions for a class of fourth order Schrödinger equations. This extends the first rigorous results on blowing-up solutions for the biharmonic nonlinear Schrödinger due to Boulenger and Lenzmann [8] and confirm numerical conjectures from [1–3, 11].

On critical behaviour in systems of Hamiltonian partial differential equations

2013

Abstract We study the critical behaviour of solutions to weakly dispersive Hamiltonian systems considered as perturbations of elliptic and hyperbolic systems of hydrodynamic type with two components. We argue that near the critical point of gradient catastrophe of the dispersionless system, the solutions to a suitable initial value problem for the perturbed equations are approximately described by particular solutions to the Painlevé-I (P $$_I$$ I ) equation or its fourth-order analogue P $$_I^2$$ I 2 . As concrete examples, we discuss nonlinear Schrödinger equations in the semiclassical limit. A numerical study of these cases provides strong evidence in support of the conjecture.

Monotonicity and local uniqueness for the Helmholtz equation

2017

This work extends monotonicity-based methods in inverse problems to the case of the Helmholtz (or stationary Schr\"odinger) equation $(\Delta + k^2 q) u = 0$ in a bounded domain for fixed non-resonance frequency $k>0$ and real-valued scattering coefficient function $q$. We show a monotonicity relation between the scattering coefficient $q$ and the local Neumann-Dirichlet operator that holds up to finitely many eigenvalues. Combining this with the method of localized potentials, or Runge approximation, adapted to the case where finitely many constraints are present, we derive a constructive monotonicity-based characterization of scatterers from partial boundary data. We also obtain the local…

Noncommutative space and the low-energy physics of quasicrystals

2008

We prove that the effective low-energy, nonlinear Schroedinger equation for a particle in the presence of a quasiperiodic potential is the potential-free, nonlinear Schroedinger equation on noncommutative space. Thus quasiperiodicity of the potential can be traded for space noncommutativity when describing the envelope wave of the initial quasiperiodic wave.

On the integrability of the extended nonlinear Schrödinger equation and the coupled extended nonlinear Schrödinger equations

2000

We consider the extended nonlinear Schr¨ (ENLS) equation which governs the propagation of nonlinear optical fields in a fibre with higher-order effects such as higher-order dispersion and self-steepening. We show that the ENLS equation does not pass the Painlev´ test. Similarly, we claim that the coupled ENLS equations and N -coupled ENLS equations which govern the simultaneous propagation of two and more nonlinear fields in optical fibres are also not integrable from the Painlev´ e analysis point of view.

Breakdown of separability due to confinement

2017

A simple system of two particles in a bidimensional configurational space S is studied. The possibility of breaking in S the time-independent Schrodinger equation of the system into two separated one-dimensional one-body Schrodinger equations is assumed. In this paper, we focus on how the latter property is countered by imposing such boundary conditions as confinement to a limited region of S and/or restrictions on the joint coordinate probability density stemming from the sign-invariance condition of the relative coordinate (an impenetrability condition). Our investigation demonstrates the reducibility of the problem under scrutiny into that of a single particle living in a limited domain …
